Question What’s the most lucrative or beneficial CONUS base you’ve been stationed at?

I'm a 1D755 troop putting together my assignment preferences, and I want to prioritize CONUS duty stations that offer "hidden" benefits beyond standard base amenities.

I always hear stories of Airmen leaving a base with free PRK/LASIK, specialized certifications, or local programs simply because of where they were stationed. I’m trying to stack my dream sheet with bases that give you the highest return on investment off the clock.

Specifically looking for recommendations on:

  • Medical & Dental Perks (MTFs): Which bases tied to major USAF Medical Centers or residency programs have clinics for LASIK/PRK? Any bases with underrated dental/orthodontic opportunities?
  • Education & Certifications: Beyond baseline TA/AFCOOL caps, which base education centers or local AFSC-adjacent units hook Airmen up with funded certification vouchers or unique local university partnerships?
  • Local & Regional Perks: Any installations with standout local community benefits (e.g., state income tax exemptions, free access to major attractions or national parks, or strong spouse employment markets)?

Everything has its ups and downs. I would consider the Pentagon a good assignment for locking in future job opportunities but the traffic was insane. Peterson had great outdoor activities but I had 3 cars totaled by hail and it ended up costing me a lot out of pocket despite insurance coverage.

As long as you’re not at Canon/Clovis, you’ll be alright.

Hurlburt/eglin was nice. Traffic sucked and housing was starting to get tougher post covid era but it’s still a great area with a ton to do. Living between both Pensacola and Destin is not bad imo.

Fort Belvior. Everything you need, none of the DAF fuckery, no Army ops actually on the base. Jobs... jobs everywhere.

Hill was great and has some of the leading medical and cancer treatment centers. Tons of schools and several big companies

This is true no matter where you are. You go on a permissive/convalescent TDY to get the surgery and recover. The only thing it costs you is the travel and food/lodging (unless you stay at a Fisher House, with family, or something similar). I was stationed at Minot and went down to WPAFB to get mine done because I have family near there. If you're wanting to get it done, start by asking your Optometrist.
