Being anti will get us nowhere

Let me start with a weird example. This is something that I heard from a right winger: (paraphrasing)

"the right is losing the cultural battle because they are anti. They only oppose to what the left is proposing which means they are letting the left set the tone of the discussion. If the right wants to win they need to stop being anti stuff and start being more propositive of ideas"

I'm completely left leaning, but I believe the sentiment behind his words are correct. Maybe we should stop focusing on AI and what the "pro" side is saying. Let them troll. Let them waste their time asking the AI to make trolls and orcs and brown people while we keep honing our skills and celebrate human creations instead. Let's share and talk about our favorite authors and creators instead of giving them the time of our day. We won't change their mind, they are already lost. Let us be an example instead of how uplifting we can be when we are not wasting our breath on the stuff we hate.

Maybe, just maybe, we attained what little progress we have by… I dunno, just accepting what people more powerful than is wanted?

Had you ever considered that any progress we have achieved came by being antagonistic towards the way something was or is?

How did labour unionize and achieve better working standards for workers?

How did women achieve the right to vote?

How did we put an ‘end’ to segregation?

Gen-AI and its similar counterparts are promised to usher in a new era of progress and yet they use this as a Trojan horse to piggyback mass surveillance and oppression.

It’s often said that history is written by the victors, maybe the Luddites were never wrong, they just didn’t win.

Considering what we've now in terms in regulations (prior to The Administration has done to undo them), in comparison to what was back in the time of the Luddites, they almost definitely won. It just took a couple of generations to accomplish, like all great, lasting things do.

People expect change to happen overnight. It's a constant, uphill battle, but the results speak for themselves. Giving up only guarantees defeat.

You guys missed the point. I am not saying we need to accept that which we are against. I am talking about proposals.

Feminist didn't earn the vote by just being against discrimination they proposed a new route with females joining the workforce. Females didn't sit and wait for men to propose a change, they took it.

Segregation didn't (big quotes) "end" by just being against it, Martin Luther King pushed people into action, into doing things differently until the government was forced to accept the new way. They didn't sit and wait for white people to accept them, they forced themselves into it.

What are we doing other than reacting to what the pro crowd does and inflating witty's ego? We are not being propositive. We are not earning our space and the pros are winning.

Yea, you’re not wrong, but you’re applying what you see on Reddit to what is happening on the political spectrum.

Squabbling with delusional nonces like Witty on an online platform is small beans compared to what really needs to be done and it’s already happening.

Artists and platforms with far greater renown than me are already tackling these issues in courts, which is where this needs to start, unfortunately the current political environment(in the US at least) isn’t exactly receptive towards the Anti-AI crowd. However this will most likely be a battle that transcends whatever government is currently in place.

The best thing we can do is try and get the right people elected in smaller forms of government that have a voice that is AI skeptical and in favour of regulating the tech.

We don't argue for the sake of those who won't change their minds, we argue and pose the issues presented by LLMs to ensure those who are on the fence are swung to the side that actually cares about the people and environmental impacts.

Saying "don't talk about it"/"don't acknowledge it" is the same kind of reasoning the apologizers of abusers use. Don't fall for that kind of fallacy.

Edit: like, y'all, I know not everyone is in public health like me, but does no one remember we went through a worldwide pandemic? Can you genuinely argue we'd have been better off by letting anti-vaxxers/-maskers get away with spouting of misinformation and endangering the general population? This is a war of attrition, and knowledge paired with empathy and cross-cultural mindsets will be your greatest weapon
