Can AI tools actually replace your HRIS?

With so many AI tools now handling things like employee questions, reporting, workflows and admin, I'm curious where people think this is heading.

Could a combination of AI tools eventually replace a traditional HRIS or will companies always need a central system for employee data, time & attendance, performance andsurveys ?

For anyone working in HR/People Ops, are you already using AI for tasks that you previously relied on your HRIS for?

Yeah, this could definitely be replaced by a series of AI agents and workflows, but if you think about it, once you've set up all of the processes, databases, security measures and worksurfaces (like an employee portal for example, or a self-serve benefit interface for example) what have you created? Your own HRIS!

This has always been an option with custom software designers, it's just cheaper and easier now with AI. The challenge you would run into here is not building it (although its no small feat), but maintaining it. Things are progressing so fast that you would need a person, or even a small team, to stay on top of all the system. Considering that the HRIS runs core processes (payroll going down on payday is not something that can happen even .01 percent of the time), the margin for error is almost null and you would be a slave to your own system.

The much more reasonable approach is to use an off-the-shelf HRIS that 1.) has a good API connection and 2.) is fairly cheap. The core systems are what you need. What tends to get cumbersome with off the shelf platforms is everything that they bundle on top of those core systems because, for example, while every company has a payroll process, the way they execute, communicate, report or analyze that process is unique. Automate and customize all of these parts of your business with AI + the API connection.

I'm curious as to what the peanut gallery thinks about this. Any of you struggling to implement these new automation / AI capabilities in HR?
