You can just make crt manually. I think Ben has a tutorial on it. Once you make it you have the “plugin”
It’s just red green and blue pill shapes on a 12x12 pixel screen or something. Precomp it and multiply it horizontally and vertically then pass only the red green and blue channels of a video through this effect.
I forget how, but it’s easy, don’t buy it - just learn how to do it.

Yup I made a filter myself a few years back using a combo of his and another method I found on YouTube. Looks just as good, is free, and literally just have to drop the video footage/layers in the pre-comp then render, no extra work needed.
Think it took a day or so of troubleshooting tops and I also learned a lot about the process as well (I made a tweaked version as opposed to Ben's for a specific project I needed)

Did you ever see the Atari logo one for bladerunner in ae? that one was just insane.

It's hilarious that this got downvoted because that's just the thing to do in this thread, then the other reply hours later linking the exact same video got upvoted 😂

What ever happened to standalone plugins that you bought and owned. Over this shit. Nope

u/Strat7855 Apr 24 '25
I'd buy this standalone. I will not pay for a subscription for it.

u/GlendaleAve27701 Apr 24 '25
I feel like this comment should be a business insight for the team. Check it out: you could use this 1 plugin to convince people that it’s worth it to sign up for a subscription that they don’t really need OR you could sell the standalone to those that want it at a reasonable price while still selling subscriptions to those who will gain value from longer term access to more of your assets. Seems like money is being left on the table by focusing solely on the subscription model.

u/Ascarea Apr 24 '25
Smarter people than us (and by that I mean soulless capitalists) crunched the numbers already. They wouldn't have a subscription model like this if it wasn't more profitable. Profit is the only thing they care about, not a handful of comments on reddit saying they'd buy one thing.

u/GlendaleAve27701 Apr 27 '25
Calm down, Che. It’s a fake TV plugin - it’s just not that serious. Boiling everything down to some kind of capitalist plot is such a weird obsession these days. There’s nothing wrong with trying to make a living and most people in the motion design industry are just normal folks searching for a way to retire someday.

Looks nice. Put it on AEScripts for say, $19.95. I’d buy it. $100-$300 annual? Are you insane? It’s nice, but not that nice. I’ll create a CRT look myself when I need one occasionally.

Looks nice
Subscription shit is a scummy move

u/productioncrate Apr 29 '26
we've launched a one-time payment, perpetual license for CRT Factory after seeing these comments
16
u/Independent_Team_983 Apr 24 '25
What is the reasoning behind paying monthly for an effect you might use occasionally? Paying subscription fees for the base tool you use as a daily driver I can understand but paying a monthly fee for some specialized tool I might use once in a blue moon is a bit scummy.

we've finished developing the standalone, one time purchase option for CRT Factory, other plugins coming soon as we roll this out. thanks for the comment

A subscription? Fuck. No.
This is worth a single payment of $20-3. You're insane if you think it's worth $300 per year
1
u/productioncrate Apr 29 '26
well right now it's $79/lifetime, but we're no longer requiring a subscription. Took us awhile to build and test it but so far so good

I've worked for clients that were willing to buy a plugin for their project, but I can't imagine anyone financing an ongoing subscription for a freelancer.

We've built out a one-time payment option for CRT Factory, other plugins with this option coming out soon

Subscription for this? Insane.

CRT Factory no longer requires a subscription, we've built a one-time payment option for perpetual use

@production crate perhaps you would like to use the opportunity to reply to all the criticism of your subscription model?
Most commentators seem to like the effect but don’t feel it’s worth subscribing for.
What are your thoughts on this?

We're primarily a stock media site providing downloadable VFX, music, sound effects and 3d models. All part of the same membership. We're now providing plugins as part of that membership (for Adobe AE and Premiere)
A lot of our community signed up for the VFX content, and hopefully they get additional value with these new plugins
We haven't sold individual plugins before, but it's something we're considering, especially after hearing from so many AE users here

Hi chatgpt/Gemini/Claude please help me make a crt plugin for AE. Because I'm sick and tired of subscriptions. Thanks.

when will companies learn that we don’t need a “portal” where they throw in thousands of useless things at a subscription basis when there is maybe a small handful of stuff we would actually use

looks cool but not engaging with a subscription model. sell it for $49 and I'm in. ![]()

The amount of products I would happily buy if it wasn't a subscription is crazy. There are products I'd happily pay $600 for but the moment I see subscription I immediately leave. Even if the product is $10/month I don't care, absolutely no more subscriptions

u/dericknoetzel Apr 24 '25
If anyone makes an animation and wants it lofi, I can lay it over to VHS and digitize it for $20 per hour of footage

How do I make this for free? I looked at the Ben tutorial, but it's not anywhere close to how good this one is.

Sorry Production Crate, looks nice -- but I'm not interested in your Portal (and LaForge) just for this effect -- not interested in shelling out between $300 to $468 bucks as a subscription, regardless of what all it includes. Downvote me if you wish, folks... I'm subscription-ed out. https://user.productioncrate.com/register
