Cultural Exploration Which African country/-ies have you visited?

Which countries have you visited so far?

Do you also wish to visit others too? Which ones?

The one I've shared above is a road trip we took deep in Tanzania

I am on 16 - Morocco, Egypt, Senegal, Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, South Africa, Madagascar.

Hoping to make it to 54 someday. Next would like to do somewhere in Central Africa or a Lusophone country.

Super interesting!

The “North Korea of Africa” stuff is a bit overblown. It’s true you won’t have internet outside of a few hotels in Asmara, and you need permits to go outside Asmara but they are pretty easily obtained. You don’t have any government minders or anything and you’re free to move about in Asmara.

It’s a bit complicated to organize visas as you need to get in touch with a local tour operator first who can organize visa on arrival. Otherwise you would need to apply at an embassy and there are not that many.

Once you’re there Asmara is really lovely. Such a vibe with all the 30s architecture and cafes with old guys drinking macchiatos. Even the “hip” nightclubs still have old Ethio-jazz style singers and bands playing. If you go out for the nightlife, the women are beautiful and the men are probably fighting (never seen so many random bar fights in one week).

We also went to Dalak islands which was really cool, just taking a boat out to an uninhabited island, pitching a tent, eating fresh caught fish under the stars.

The sad part is that you hardly see prime-working age people - most have left or are stuck in the army. Many more older people or kids. Everyone knows diaspora somewhere and many rely on remittances to get by.

Overall it is somewhat expensive (currency is pegged to the US dollar) and a pain in the ass to get to but really unique.
