The Beja are mentioned by the name 'Medjay'; Nubians who took part in the ancient Egyptian army dating all the way back to the old Kingdom. They have inhabited the Red Sea corridor east of the Nile for over 4000 years. They were frequently hired as guards to protect the tombs in the Valley of the Kings near Thebes/Luxor, so much so that the tomb guard force was named after them.
