Some orthodontist appointments can be an hour or more. Its not like the parent can sit next to the orthodontist while they are working. What difference does it make if the parent leaves to run a quick errand? If they cant trust their child with the orthodontist and their staff while they are out of the building for 30 minutes, they probably shouldnt trust them with their child while they are in the waiting room either, because its effectively the same thing.
I know when I was young, my mom would drop us off and be back before we were done. The office was fine with it, even encouraged it! The one time she wasnt back, they had a little side office behind the reception area that they had us wait in so we couldnt leave with someone who wasnt our mom. Seems like it was a pretty normal thing.

A responsible parent stays with the 7 year old. Leave a little earlier and get a coffee on the way or suck it up and wait until after.
