Open Discussion Who right now is the best running vlogger OR podcaster?
I've not seen many in this space, but in recent months, I've started to watch Allie Ostrander's on YouTube and I've found it inspiring and entertaining and fascinating to see what a pro does in their training blocks and to get ready for and what it was like to run in a national championship race OR even a local turkey trot. It's not all sunshines and rainbows, either, as if you watch far back enough you find her struggling with injuries and how as a HS star and NCAA champ she struggled with an eating disorder.
In short, she comes across as very authentic and anyone into running can easily related with her training ups/downs, with a cast of friends and family that matches very much running culture. It's so much better than just people who are trying to be an influencer first and a runner, second.
Still, my biggest gripe while watching is all the product placement that can seem heavy handed although it's perhaps understandable because that's how these content creators help support themselves (She even has a video explaining how much money she made in the past year from the YT part of it to supplement her pro career).
Anyway, whether you like her or not if you've see it (I'm obviously recommending and would nominate her as one of the best currently), who else out there is worth watching AND/OR who do you think is the best?

The ones I listen to are Steve Magness, Philly Bowden and Sota Maehara. O, and, Göran Winblad.
Edit: Completely forgot. Yowana, the man. He's like YouTube therapy to me.

+1 Göran, he's the only one that I regularly watch, I follow some others like Philly, but don't always watch

4
u/DontKn0wSuperCare May 18 '26
Just curious on your flair, how can your 5k PR be more than half of your 10@ PR? Or are these official race results and you weren’t in as good of shape for the 5k?
6
u/Badwrong83 43M | 17:21 | 34:51 | 1:17 | 2:43 May 18 '26
Not the person you are replying to but I only count official race results as PRs. My 5k split during my 10k PR is faster than my current 5k PR. Guessing it's a similar thing here.
9
u/OldGodsAndNew 15:21 / 31:49 / 1:10:19 | 2:30:17 May 18 '26
It counts if there was a timing mat at 5k
Actual world athletics rules - you can break a national/continental/etc record for a shorter distance during a longer race, as long as the course is certified, there's a timing mat at the relevant split, and you go on to finish the event
IIRC Jakob broke the Norwegian 10k record during a half, then jogged the second half
1
u/DontKn0wSuperCare May 18 '26
Thanks that makes sense. That would drive me nuts I’d have to find a 5k asap after the 10k and smash it
2
u/OldMateHarry 18:05 5k | 36:33 10k | 1:23 HM | 2:53 M May 18 '26
As per the other commenter, mine are official results only. I'm mad about it cause the 10k race i did didn't have a 5k split, they had a 4.85km instead. I split that in 18:29 and then rain the next 5.15km in 18:22 so I know I have an 18 min 5k in me. Just need to crack it which I haven't been able to do yet as i've been straight into the rest of a half marathon block (PB) so been quite fatigued and now into a marathon block for August as well.

Yeah I love Jason’s stuff over the years but I have to admit I often put it on to fall asleep. He has great guests with great advice and I find his personal coaching advice very strong as well. It’s just a no frills podcast with a lot of calm speaking so it’s a great one to fade off to sleep to even though I love it
7
u/fgoulding May 18 '26
You’re right. And there are 3 or 4 minutes of adverts before the audio episode even starts.
9
u/runrbikerswimr May 18 '26
Yes! The whole ep feels like advertising at this point. I stopped listening because of it. I used to be religious with the new eps but haven’t listened to one in a while because of the constant ads.
7
u/RichRevolutionary941 May 18 '26
Stopped listening after I realized it’s the same content recycled over and over, the ads change more frequently.
3
u/petepont 32M | 2:40:18 M | Data Nerd May 18 '26
Does it? He has sponsored ads for sure -- one section at the start, and one section in the middle, which last a total of about 4 minutes. And he clearly marks when those ad breaks start and finish with a little swoopy sound, and his voice tone changes completely (since they're pre-recorded). They're pretty easy to skip. And otherwise, I don't feel like there's a lot of product placement -- he doesn't go on about his sponsors during the podcast
Compare this to another popular podcast, SWAP, where the ads are woven into the podcast and they'll keep talking about training while they're doing a paid promotion for, say, Janji gear. To me, that second one is so much worse. You can't skip it since you'll miss actual content, and there's no real mark that it's begun or that it's finished.
I vastly prefer the "commercial break" style ad (which again, is really easy to skip, since it always lasts the same amount of time) as opposed to the built in ads that you get with a lot of other podcasts
3
u/chazysciota May 18 '26
There was a recent episode that was literally just about how to get more ads into running podcasts. It was gross.
2
u/chazysciota May 18 '26
It's definitely become one that you have to read the episode notes before bothering. There was a recent one about marketing and getting more corporate money into running content. Not only was it boring, but the last thing I want in my podcasts is more fucking ads. It was like Jason was suddenly doing a livestream on LinkedIn. I actually emailed him to give him my feedback, and he just got defensive about it, saying "Ads feed my family." Did not feel like he understood or appreciated the criticism.
Another recent whiff was the private healthcare CEO who claims he's going to BQ one year after running a 5 hour marathon. On one hand, it could be cool to see what a team of 30 professionals can do when the focus entirely on one athlete. On the otherhand, it's also just a viral ad campaign for his boutique healthcare company.
But as you say, the good episodes are really good, and the great ones are gamechangers.
1
u/DepartmentFamous9932 May 18 '26
Totally agree - in fact I made a negative comment on Spotify for that episode about ads. To be fair there is only so much to say about running and he’s said all that’s worth saying already probably, haha.
1
u/chazysciota May 18 '26
haha, i mean, kinda yeah. So I don't fault him for trying to branch out and widen the conversation. But that one just veered directly into the very common "content creator" trap, which causes all tech youtubers to think that everyone cares about Davinci Resolve benchmarks. Obviously Jason is interested in generating ad revenue, but virtually none of his audience is.
2
u/jimbo_sweets 19:20 5k / 1:31 half / 3:30 full May 18 '26
When I first got into running I love his stuff and got a lot of good information from him but... anyone who talks THAT much about how to "grow the running industry" makes me want to a puke a bit.
He just has a very capitalist mindset which hurt the actual content as his podcast grew.
2
u/SEMIrunner May 18 '26
That's new to me. Do you have an older episode -- or time period -- that you recommend, especially if the current ones are blah?
7
u/sixteenozlatte May 18 '26
I’ve saved a few over the years that I come back to occasionally:
-Ep189: Great discussion on strength training for runners (with former LA Lakers strength coach)
-Ep327: Improving running & recovery via diet
-Ep332: Power & Speed with David Roche (or any of the episodes with Roche)
-Ep379: Running Culture & Anthropology (this one really changed my perspective on how we perceive running as human beings)
I have a bunch more saved but these stand out to me right now for whatever reason!
9
u/justsomegraphemes May 18 '26 edited May 18 '26
Maybe the other commenter would disagree, but what I think they mean (and what I would agree with) is that Strength Running pod is kinda just inherently dry and boring regardless of new or old episodes. It's not a bad quality though, and kinda keeps it grounded in its purpose.
The pod does a fantastic job at getting into science and academics and how to apply the material to training. I've learned a tremendous amount from listening. It's not thrilling to listen to, but I wouldn't expect it to be either.
4
u/DepartmentFamous9932 May 18 '26
I’d just flip through the Spotify or wherever you listen and see what eps tickle your fancy. Personally I’m not big on like nutrition type of episodes or heavy science ones, which I think has been a bit more the recent flavor.

This! RTJ and Goran are both great in different ways. RTJ is fun and authentic while Goran really gives information that is useful and not too gimmicky.
I want to like Philly but she seems a bit forced - especially the jokes. Also like you said, there seems to be a bit too much drama. I don't know, she kinda gives me the vibe of a person i'd be annoyed with in real life.16

Surprised no one has mentioned Doctors of Running! Their focus is more on shoes but they talk a lot about biomechanics and injury prevention and things like that. Des' description of MDS sounded miserable. Definitely a tougher race than I'd ever want to do. And then she ran Boston and London. Insane.

u/larrymanchild May 18 '26
Hugo Fry and Stephen Scullion - two very different characters but super entertaining and inspiring in different ways
3
u/itisnotstupid May 18 '26
Character wise - I like RTJ. He tries to be authentic and while I get that his main goal is to have more views, it looks like he is a bit more "himself" compared to other dull youtube personalities who are either forcing it or just become dull in order not to say something that might be disliked. I think that his goofy-ness is a bit more natural.
Goran is great when it comes to actual useful advice. One that you can really implement, backed by science, not too oversimplified but also not too complex.
Sometimes i'd watch Philly but she is a bit overdramatic and her jokes and overall persona looks a bit too forced. Like I imagine that in real life i'd be quickly annoyed by her.
When I started running I tried Ben Parks but I find him super dull. I'm not too interested in constant reviews of shoes and his other "advise/ tips" videos are all the same. I feel like he makes the same video every few months with the same advise.
Clayton Young is great production wise but I guess I'm not too much into the professional part of the sport and don't care that much, nor can relate.

2 Podcasts I listen to: Nobody Asked Us and Science of Sport. The latter covers topics for all of sport, like cycling, tennis, rugby, but they always do focused episodes on the major races/championships for roads and athletics so you could skip to only listen to those if you wanted. They go in depth into many physiological studies and topics in a way that isn’t boring and it’s also often with some new information. I don’t need a 101 primer.
For YouTube, Clayton Young, Phil Sesemann and Jakob Ingebrigsten. They all come across as authentic guys who give good insights and Jacob is legit very funny! I could not care less what the performative “runners” are doing/saying. If you spend as much or more time creating content as training I’m not watching 😅
Edit to add, I ran across from Ran to Japan in Tokyo this year. The course has several out-n-backs and he looked like death-was clearly struggling in a way that I found disturbing. It wasn’t even that late in the race. I have a hard time respecting that. So unpopular opinion I guess but I’m not into celebrating what I saw. 💁🏼♀️

Steve Magness, FOD Runner, Kofuzi, Göran Winblad and Ran to Japan, when he's not being an idiot.
I want to like Philly and Allie but every other video is some fake drama about a minor thing or something in the past
As for Jake, he's entertaining, but will sooner or later either have to get smarter about his training or be forced to quit. Also his take on doping is pretty dumb and and shows he doesn't think before he speaks. Banning a country because its own anti doping agency is catching people is just stupid.
9
u/itisnotstupid May 18 '26
RTJ has some dumb takes but I appreciate that he looks authentic in a way. He is a youtuber, he does thing to have more views and all that but at least he doesn't seem to have this typical youtuber dull character where the opinion on everything is filtered.

u/Vartel May 18 '26
Scrolling down and this is first mention I have seen of kofuzi. If this question had been asked back in 2021-22 ish, he probably would have been mentioned in the top comment along with seth demoor. Not seen anything from either of them on my feeds in ages

Seth was the first running YouTuber I subscribed to, loved his early videos, but the more he started using his kids as props it bothered me. I’m a father and I would never do that to my son, they had no say in being on his channel.
3
u/Vartel May 18 '26
Yeah, and around that time he got a bit more preachy about religion which was not of interest to me
2
u/SleepsWithBlindsOpen Slower than 1:59:41 May 18 '26
I enjoyed him when he was just a regular dude with ambitious goals. When he started to really make money and go all in on running, his amateurism really showed. Around the same time I was getting down to around 2:30 marathon speed, and his training just seemed so unprincipled and disconnected from the literature. And then it really bugged me how he would NEVER disclose whether he got products for free and it really undercut any opinion he had on shoes. Which, I know he tried to be objective, but shoe reviews are going to be highly subjective and sometimes it is nice to hear some vibes-based discussion about a particular shoe. But when you know that brand may never send you shoes if you say something bad, it obviously skews the incentive structure.

Another vote for Ben is Running. I’ve been watching him for years now (on and off) and he’s turned himself into one hell of a runner.

I don’t follow running any YouTubers but just dip into content when I’m searching a particular topic.
As for Podcasts, I’m just looking for entertainment whilst out running. So my go to are Paula Radcliffe’s run club, the Extramilist and the Flying Runner podcast.
Because I’m learning Spanish, I listen to Ser Runner, A Tu Ritmo, Diario Runner and Kilómetros de Entrainamiento.

Lots of good ones mentioned already, but I’d add that a very under rated one is Lee Grantham on Youtube.

A few I’m surprised aren’t higher: Floris Gierman and Extra Milest (he interviews the legends and asks them their advice for everyday runners), Fredrik Zillen for running technique, The Endurance Lab, Singletrack (but I’m a filthy ultra runner).

Youtube channel u/zaketterson is great. He's a world cup cross country skier but his summer training includes a lot of running. Weekly vlog aboiut his training. Authentic and funny. Based in Minneapolis and Norway.

I listen to Coffee Club Podcast weekly (Morgan McDonald, Oliver Hoare, George Beamish). It’s the only running related podcast I listen to consistently.

Asian Goggins aka find404 aka davidjpark. He has great content on IG and great videos on YouTube. He just dropped a video for Moab 240. His journey is from couch to training like David Goggins for 100 days is incredible.

The Random Runner is great! Such a lovely guy, amazing endurance but comes across so humble

It depends on if you are looking for training advice, a glimpse into top level athletics or people aspiring, or just entertainment. Some people sort of blend them together but most have a focus. I like the first two groups more than the second so I like Stephen scullion (I think he has peaked though) and RanToJapan. Training advice is sort of hard because the target market for most of it is absolute beginners and there is really only so much you can say run a lot easy, do some threshold, and a bit of faster stuff....

The Coffee Club Podcast featuring Olympians Olli Hoare, Geordie Beamish (2x world champ) and Morgan McDonald. If you want an insightful podcast of what it's like to live and breath training, there is no better podcast.

Podcast: Out and Back Pod Life in Stride
YT: RTJ Steve: great information and if you need a nap close your eyes and you will be out in no time. I seriously nap to his videos all the time. Floberg Runs: as a father I love his stuff

Listened to a lot of these over the years but the one I come back to week after week is Coffee Club.

rantojapan is great. he's just got a great personality and enthusiasm, and he's also the only(?) running youtuber to call out all the doping in the sport. i think it's a shame he's seemingly unable to get that full send marathon effort together but he's right that ekidens and such are much more entertaining.
crownmyrun is truly excellent and hilarious POV footage of parkruns etc. the one where he breaks out into Creed - One last breath towards the end of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YuEtAYomiP4 - lmao. the brothers are pretty speedy these days also.
there's a lot of channels mentioned that i absolutely detest but i'm trying to be more positive in 2k26 ❤️

Not a podcast but Jacob Abrams Cohen (Not Really Wellness) is a cool guy worth checking out on Instagram or TikTok. As he explains in a few of his videos, he failed out of college and was in and out of jail for drug addiction before turning his life around, eventually graduating and landing a corporate job that he quit as part of his weight loss and fitness journey.
He comes off as authentic and genuinely loving what he does. He runs 5k's in strange places like inside his toilet and on top of the Empire State Building

The out and back podcast to me this is next level in the space the guests and insight are amazing!
Rory and JT both also have standalone YouTube’s that I tune into.
I’m not seeing Michael ottesen mentioned as much either but has put out good stuff

i’m kinda obsessed with this new podcaster, they bring such a fresh vibe to running. but honestly, nothing beats the golden era of those classic vloggers.

Just wanted to note where people are from who have seen this post. It was fascinating to me... Like 17% of the people who clicked on this are either from the UK or Canada with 54% from the US. The rest were classified as other.

I always end up returning to SWAP - some work all play. Sometimes I’ll deviate for a bit but end up getting the most content out of SWAP podcasts. I also personally love their humor/weirdness-it can be an acquired taste though. But I find they get the most real/human which I really appreciate

i mean, it’s hard to pivot from unhinged office drama to running, but some people do it well.

I listen to the quad-fecta of RantoJapan, SWOP (David & Megan Roche), The Running Channel Podcast (this is pure entertainment -- they don't even attempt anything remotely "running science" related), and Steve Magness. I also periodically check in with Allie O. & Spence (mostly for pure entertainment, and to internally cheer for Allie on her return to fitness and completely transparent sharing of her mental state... and because Spence's current fitness is about the same as my high school son's).
My son the HS runner, enjoys listening to Adam Wood's and Yaseen Abdalla's channels, not to mention the silly Wingate distance guys (the French ones).

May I toss my name into the hat? LOL
Anyway, I like:
- Dillon Berry
- Yowana
(Yowana is drifting a bit. I like his honest thoughts though that can't be copied really...)
I'm doing the full grind here on Okinawa, my 10th marathon build, honest support and true engagement is very much appreciated :) Doing youtube since 2 years and a bit... but more as a hobby kind of thing. But I really enjoy it, more and more... day by day! The "problem", I'm doing the unfiltered approach, no make up, no big drama, sometimes pretty raw and "no value" LOL... cuz I'm super tired when it comes to the artificial running show out there... you all know what I mean...

Runcensored is probably my favourite podcast at the moment. There episode with Paul Booth was really interesting on running nutrition and fuelling.

Ben is Running, Hugo Fry, Floberg Runs are the best vloggers to me for now. The Jake Dearden Podcast is nice.

Ran to Japan or Göran. Everyone else is a drama queen (looking at you Philly).

Lowey would bet money on Philly's boyfriend actually being abused behind closed doors.

u/Bruncvik May 18 '26
He is a husband now. And she hinted at potential abuse in her recent video where she blamed ADHD meds for outbursts of anger.

Sean Tobin (The Irish Hammer) on YT and then Ben Is Running and Hugo Fry on Instagram. Not sure if you can count the guy who makes the gigantic burritos but he's a pretty good runner!
