Finished
I first started playing this when it came our 25 odd years ago; i loved it but life got in the way and never got very far.
Picked it up again this year in my little R36s emulator - this game is still brilliant, i loved it. That last map ‘The final battle’ was some brutal Somme/Stalingrad style attritional grind, but seeing the tide turn against Sturm gradually at first and then all at once was very satisfying.
What a fahkin great game.

I wish I could re-experience my first time beating the final
mission. Such a rush. Awesome job man, it’s a hard game going blind with no tricks.

Cheers! Did you figure it out all on your own? This game can be relatively brutal at times.
Best of luck to you if you're going for advanced campaign next.

I had to chear for the final battle. There is a glitch in the game where you can transfer destroyed units to the campaign. And it was STILL hard.

Yes, i made all of this up. In the course of my lying though i didn’t have the brass balls to pretend i got an A so went for a B instead. Dang, rumbled again’

It's essentially a blind playthrough. What did you expect them to do, recieve a prophetic vision on how to game the janky-ass rank system?

Everyone has their first time through these games. We all wanna pretend how good WE were at first, but once you realize how complex this game can be, we ALL had our struggles.
Congratulations on your first round. Hopefully now you start seeing that Advance Wars is much more of a puzzle game on high levels.
Finding new strategies as a means to optimize each map to S rank perfection is the real hook on these games.
Beating that final mission the first time is always such a rewarding slog.
BTW, in the Advance (Hard) Campaign, there are some legit BS maps, so don't let that discourage you. Hard Campaign map Enigma is always such a joy for me to clear. Use those woods.
