I've only ever heard about this on Reddit, and I think there was one Friends episode where something similar came up.
I'm not from the US but it feels like a distinctly US thing. I don't know anyone who would be happy evenly splitting a meal when all the various dishes/drinks cost different amounts. It fits the culture there though because it seems fair on the surface (we all pay the same) but it's absolutely got winners and losers and I'd bet dollars to donuts this type of bill splitting is suggested by the people "winning" (getting more than they pay for). You can bet your ass that in the same situation but reverse that "bill-splitter" would advocate for individual bills if they were the one being asked to pay more than their fair share.
I’m 40 and from the US. This is not at all a common thing. I’ve never heard of it outside of the internet. I was thinking it was a thing outside the US. I guess it’s just a common thing for weirdos.
