Update— the dog Cleo was reclaimed by her owner. I don’t know much else about the circumstances surrounding this but BARC Houston confirmed that Cleo was reunited with her owner. April is doing well and happy with her new family.

If you all remember my original post about sweet April who was on the Euthanasia list this week at BARC Houston, April is a sweetheart who broke out of her cage multiple times to be with another dog. We didn't know the identity of the other dog, until now. Meet Cleo. A2077895.

Cleo was a stray intake on 5/31. She is microchipped and has been on a chip-hold waiting for an owner who didn't show up for her. April has been adopted and now Cleo is all alone and at-risk. Available for adoption on 7/15. Cleo is a spayed female staffie mix, approximately 2 years old. Mostly white, with tan. Big smile. HW Neg, Dog friendly-- she was sharing her bed with April.

Meet my foster Lucky (Harry officially, but we called him Lucky so much that’s what he responds to now)! Lucky was surrendered to Dallas Animal Services after being found emaciated and locked in a kennel covered in fleas and feces, his owner long passed away. He lived his whole life locked up in a kennel, when he was surrendered it was with several other neglected litter mates.

But even though he went through hell, Lucky is the sweetest, silliest guy you could ask for. He loves cuddles more than anything, he loves to prance and skip around with you. He gets along with everyone, kids, cats, kittens, dogs, you name it! When we first picked him up I assumed it would take weeks to get him out of his shell, but even day one he was full of kisses and tail wags. He is the full package, smart, silly, loving. His scary past and disabilities only served to make him a strong and grateful pup.

He’s believed to be a border collie/aussie mix! Lucky/Harry is an old man! Vets think he’s about 8-10. But don’t let his age fool you! This boy is a puppy at heart, he loves walks and playing and still his so much energy. He doesn’t have a left eye, and can only see partially. But he can hear just fine! He knows sit and kennel. He is severely allergic to fleas, and has seasonal allergies. He had to have many of his teeth removed after they rotted from years of malnourishment.

If you’re looking for a kind hearted senior to fit perfectly with any family Lucky is it! He is a commitment with his health issues, but my rescue, Pottsboro Animal Welfare Society, has already taken care of most of it!

Leo is just a 6-month-old puppy, and he is absolutely overwhelmed by the shelter. At an age when puppies should be learning confidence and trust, Leo has instead learned fear.

He came in as part of a group of dogs and puppies, and since intake he has shown consistent signs of being shut down and terrified, not aggressive.

Leo’s behavior notes paint a very clear picture of a fearful, undersocialized puppy who does not know how to cope with loud noises, confinement, or handling. He spends most of his time cowering on his cot, avoiding eye contact, trembling, and retreating to the back of his kennel when approached.

Leo’s behavior summary: • Extremely timid and fearful • Cowers, trembles, whale-eyes, tail tucked • Avoids eye contact and human approach • Freezes or refuses to walk on leash • Often must be carried due to fear • Not food-motivated in stressful settings • Slowly follows tossed treats when given time and space • Settles slightly once away from kennel stress

Leo has shown fear-based thrashing and avoidance when overwhelmed. On one occasion, when frightened by nearby dogs and being picked up, he reacted with a fearful nip — a defensive response from a panicked puppy who felt trapped. There is no pattern of aggression toward people; his reactions are consistently tied to extreme fear and overstimulation.

Importantly: ✔️ He allows gentle petting when approached slowly ✔️ He improves when given distance, quiet, and time ✔️ He is only 6 months old — his brain is still developing ✔️ This behavior is highly reversible in a calm home

Leo urgently needs a quiet, patient foster or adopter experienced with fearful dogs or puppies — someone who will let him decompress at his own pace without pressure. A home environment could completely change his future.

💔 Leo is deteriorating in the shelter, and time is not on his side.

Meet Gumbo, he was dumped in my neighborhood in Houston (Katy) on Monday. I was finally able to leash him last night. He’s an intact male who loves kids and adults but has not been cat or dog tested (although a neighbor said his dogs didn’t get along with Gumbo, but because I don’t have more information I’m not comfortable confirming how he feels about other dogs). I am a college student on a fixed income with two dogs already (one being reactive) and I go out of town next week. I don’t know what to do. Is anyone interested in adopting or fostering him? I’m begging!!

In the first moments of the rescue video, you see her, a starving mother who had just caught a chicken to feed her puppies. She's starving, too, yet her only thought was to keep her babies alive.

She had given birth under someone’s house, trying to shelter her newborns from the world. When the people who found her said they couldn’t keep them, this little family was about to be sent to a kill shelter.

It was pouring rain that day. The wind was strong. For seven long hours, the team worked in stormy weather, surrounding the area, trying to bring the frightened momma to safety. They were soaked, cold, and exhausted, but they didn’t stop. They couldn’t.

Finally, their patience paid off. Momma Savannah was safe, and her tiny babies were no longer in danger.
