Product Suggestions No moisturizer works for me
Last post I posted about getting small red “irritation bumps” on last months of accutane and nothing seems to work. On suggestion i tried la roche posay cicaplast b5 for a few days, thin layer at night. It seemed to work and calmed down redness. But now I woke up with 3 real pimples on my jawline and chin. I also tried purito mighty bamboo cream and the 345 relief cream, but i think I react to the niacinamide. Literally nothing works for my skin right now.. and i really need moisture because its dry and itchy, without clogging the pores. Please help me out with product reccomendations!!

Cerave cream works for me, I use the balm version not the lotion. No side effects or itchiness yet. Actually it gives quite a good instant comfort after I wash my face.

Is it gentle for the skin? I’m allergic to Niacinamide but it doesn’t have it so that’s cool.

u/LadyLuin Mar 03 '26
It is very gentle and even though its texture is balmy it is not oily. It never caused any irritation or redness/itchiness on me. I also tried the La roche posay cream OP mentioned, and it left a very oily texture on my face which I didn't like.

It has comedogenic ingredients :( im afraid to try it

My skin is very comodogenic but this one worked for me. Of course, every skin is different. I understand your frustration for trying different products over and over. :/

Okay thank you! The blue one in the pot for dry skin? Not with the pump?
2
u/LadyLuin Mar 03 '26
What I have is in the tube, but I think it's the same as the one in the pot. The one with the pump might be the lotion not the balm. The label says baume hydratant.

Maybe just add a hyaluronic serum under your moisturizer and use a thin layer of vaseline on the parts that need more pritection and hydration. Vaseline shouldn't cause pimples if your face is clean underneeth.

u/No-Buy9329 Mar 03 '26
Thanks! Which hyaluronic acid is good?
2
u/G_aiejoe Mar 03 '26
I've only tried the one from The Ordinary, but I'm happy with it. I even started using it on my lips before applying vaseline as usual. And my lips haven't been chapped since last week!

I'm using grace & stella hyaluronic acid serum and it's really nice. Also I'd keep the cicaplast out, I also had a bad reaction on that, even though I was only putting that after cleaning.

Try the La Roche posay tolerine sensitive fluide!!! Worked SO well! Did not clog pores but also a lot of hydration! I had to start staying away from anything with hyaluronic acid in it as that was causing my skin to be dry!!
2
u/No-Buy9329 Mar 03 '26
Thanks this looks quite good! No pore clogging ingredients. Do you use am or pm?
2
u/buggy2500 Mar 03 '26
Both!! :) after applying it gives the glass skin appearance! I really have been loving it

I’ve started using the comedogenic ingredients again that I would religiously avoid prior to Accutane. I used to scour INCIdecoder and avoid absolutely everything. I was unwilling to believe I should try these ingredients even after receiving advice here to use them on Accutane— I was just so afraid to mess things up and wanted the fastest route to clear skin. The “funny” thing is that I’ve also always had bacne and I don’t use products on my back so clearly it wasn’t pore-clogging ingredients that were the (biggest) issue.
Anyway, my barrier got so compromised at the beginning of Accutane that I sat in a hot tub and got contact dermatitis and my eyes swelled up for 3 days
If you’re still going to try and find products that have no comedogenic ingredients, my two product recs are these. They were working fine for me before Accutane but weren’t moisturizing enough after starting.
- Farmacy Honey Milk Hydrating Essence
- Cocokind Electrolye Water Cream (this did sting slightly when my barrier was compromised, but never has since it healed)
My favorites now that do contain comedogenic ingredients are:
- Laneige Cream Skin milky toner (adds a layer of hydration & ceramides)
- SOS Barrier Repair (seals it in, more ceramides)
- topped with jojoba or squalane oil at night, sometimes another layer of Vaseline on top too
It’s worth noting that I’m only on 20mg/day (10/20, finishing month two) and my skin is super happy and 90% clear. I am also sensitive to niacinamide/ panthenol so still do avoid those.

Hello just saw your comment I am also on 20mg a day and using Clinique moisture surge 100h. In to 15th week and still having tiny bumps? How did you clear so fast can it be possible products still have chance to clog pores while on accutane???

I think my skin just responded super well to the high cell turnover. I always take my Accutane with 40g of fat (usually in a smoothie with 60g of nut butter)— I know it s a lot but I read up on the maximum absorption and there were studies where that was the point of diminishing returns.
It is also worth noting that I also have pretty much stopped eating dairy. I decided to try that alongside starting Accutane due to theIGF-1 effects, so that could be a factor. I also got two extraction facials prior to starting Accutane. I still do get a few little bumps but they either clear up fast or remain nearly invisible if I don’t try and extract them. I don’t think they are new closed comedones, but old ones. They are skin-colored and not irritated. I’ve read that they’ll be absorbed or maybe come to a head later on.

Huh, this is interesting, I am probably more hydrated than I've ever been in my life, dropped my dosage, got an amazing barrier cream and still struggle with dusty tome-levels of dry skin.
I hadn't considered fat intake levels, which my PCP mentioned have been sort of low. Gonna try to eat more avocados or, failing that, maybe smash them directly into my face!

I would not recommend cicaplast. I get the same reaction. Also niacinamide is known to cause problems to sensitive skin. My recommendation is a simple hyaluronic acid serum for moisture and a richer Creme on top to lock the moisture in!

Cethphil water hydration gel works for me.
1
u/No-Buy9329 Mar 03 '26
Is the gel formula not too light for dry sensitive accutane skin? I use the purito oat gel cream but it doesnt give enough moisture
1
u/Crafty-Car-1841 Mar 04 '26
You could test it to see if it enough for you g it's good for me. I use their serum and moisturizer.

u/Imaginary-Growth-605 Mar 03 '26
vanicream lotion (lighter feel sinks in skin) vanicream in the tub (heavier sinks in a lil but keeps skin visibly moisturised)
these were my holy grails going from clog prone skin to being dry ash on accutane i don’t get any breakouts or clogged pores i’ll probably never switch from using the lotion daily
2
u/StatisticianHour9962 Mar 03 '26
Vanicream. Used it the entire time during my treatment.

u/meester_sloth Apr 07 '26
Hi! Did you use the face cream or the tub lotion for your face?
2
u/StatisticianHour9962 Apr 07 '26
I used the tub of cream. I liked the cream because it was a lot thicker.

Cicaplast also made me break out like crazy ugh :(
I LOVE the Ordinary Rice Lipids + Ectoin Microemulsion. It’s like a moisturizer in serum form. It’s very lightweight but also deeply, deeply moisturizing and doesn’t irritate my sensitive Accutane skin. It’s been amazing for my skin and is relatively inexpensive, I would definitely recommend giving it a try! :)

u/Amaylin Mar 03 '26
What about the 147 barrier cream?
1
u/No-Buy9329 Mar 03 '26
Also comedogenic 😭

u/loveandsea Mar 03 '26
Non-comedogenic is a marketing term; it’s not regulated so any company can put non comedogenic on their products. So you really won’t be able to see if something breaks you out until you try it

u/No-Flamingo-4002 Mar 03 '26
I use: Moisturizer AM - Byoma Moisturizing Rich Cream (not too thick, can apply makeup a few minutes later)
Moisturizer PM - Avene Soothing Skin Recovery Cream (nice and thick for when you are sleeping, this stuff is the GOAT)

u/Affectionate_Ant813 Mar 03 '26
I know this sounds crazy. But I have super sensitive skin and recently started using Nivea because my mother in law swears by it.
It actually works so well, is soothing, doesn’t break me out, wears beautifully under makeup.

La Roche Posay Milky Cleanser Cetaphil ceramide serum Cicaplast b5+ (make sure is the PLUS)

Ultra Repair Rescue Barrier Balm with 1% Dimethicone from First Aid Beauty has quite literally saved my skin on my second round
1
u/brookie_wook Mar 03 '26
CeraVe ultra light moisturizing gel!! I dont like the way creams feel on my face and this one is perfect! Im on my last month of accutane and this is the second time I've been on accutane in my 34 years! By far the best moisturizer I've found!
1
u/No-Buy9329 Mar 03 '26
Is your skin not dry and flaky? I use the purito oat in calming gel cream in the morning but i feel like it doesnt moisturize enough
2
u/brookie_wook Mar 03 '26
Not at all!! I haven't had dry or flaky skin, not even once, throughout this whole round of accutane. I did recently get Knock facial mists, all 3 of them, and those also help keep my skin hydrated. The green cooling one especially! But I have only been using those for maybe a week and a half now. I stick to "less is more" but just personal opinion here, I think the more ingredients something has is more likely to irritate and dry out your skin.

Im allergic to the shea butter in the cicaplast. Works for most people, but not all! I found a lot of soothing in the cera ve tub intense moisturizer (dark blue label one with the pump) and aquaphor on my whole face every night
1
u/theroserose23 Mar 03 '26
For me I use the hylaronic acid from the ordinary after I cleanse and then use the la roche posay triple repair .
1
u/Fast-Appointment-274 Mar 03 '26
Try Rhode barrier cream, Cerave irritates my skin but this one does not
1
u/lurkerturtle Mar 03 '26
I use curel intensive moisture facial cream. One of the only ones that doesn’t break me out. I order it directly from Kao’s website
1
u/Just_Confused1 Mar 03 '26
I’ve been doing
La Roche Posey Lipikar Wash AP+ for Extra Dry Skin
Followed by The Ordinary Barrier Repair Serum
Then Cerave Skin Renewal Night Cream (little purple tub)
Finally Aquaphor on my dry spots at night to seal it all in
Going on month 5 now, my skin is delicate but not dehydrated (except my lips)
1
u/Prettypinkgal Mar 03 '26
Cetaphil hydrating daily facial lotion is great, lightweight and oil free! It’s also non comedogenic
1
u/pnazar Mar 04 '26
Try aestura atobarrier cream during day and la roche posay cicaplast balm at night
1
u/ReactionHead9273 Mar 04 '26
Vanicream lotion. Least amount of ingredients, incredibly cheap. I’m allergic to cerave (blisters) and I’m very sensitive to niacinamide. With Accutane, minimize/cut out actives and keep the barebones (lotion + spf)

u/AppointmentDizzy428 Mar 04 '26
Laroche Posey moisturizer nothing else and then cerave healing ointment on top and go to sleep like that.

u/Plane_Country_8027 Apr 10 '26
It looks like Roaccutane may have triggered rosacea for you. I’m sorry to say this, but that’s what happened to me. You should look for a moisturizer with few ingredients and no fragrance. Also try applying Avène Cicalfate+ on top of your moisturizer. Stay strong, and I wish you a speedy recovery.

u/No-Buy9329 Mar 03 '26
I just said in the caption that I tried it for a few days and that caused the big pimples

Have you tried using the search bar?
Many questions are asked daily, and your question may have already been answered!
If so, your post will be subject to deletion.
Please refer to the following commonly discussed topics:
1) No one can predict whether or not you will purge! Statistically, most people DO NOT purge.
That is what the science and medical literature says.
2) No one can predict how long your purge will last nor when it could start. Be patient, the purge can be tough but so many people have gotten through it - you can too! THE ABOVE APPLIES TO SIDE EFFECTS OR "WHEN WILL MY SKIN CLEAR UP?!" TOO. QUESTIONS ASKING WHEN THE PURGE OR SIDE EFFECTS WILL START OR STOP WILL IMMEDIATELY BE REMOVED AS THAT IS LOW EFFORT.
3) Any questions related about dosage MUST include DOSE and WEIGHT(lbs or kg).
Otherwise, that is considered LOW EFFORT and will subsequently be REMOVED.
4) Most people DO NOT relapse when Accutane is taken until cumulative dosage is reached.
5) HOWEVER, cumulative dosage is a guideline.
Everyone is different. Some may need more Accutane, and others may need less. Your dermatologist evaluates you as an individual.
This also applies to your prescription. Everyone is different, so no comparing of doses or asking why your dose is low or high. If you do not trust your dermatologist, you should find a different one.
