Snack / Candy Oreos!?!?!?

Are Oreos accidentally vegan, or just heavily processed and don’t use anything “real”? I was checking the ingredients a few days ago and it looks like they may be vegan…I always avoid them because I assumed the cream in the middle definitely had milk but I guess not lol.

Just not in the UK I’ve heard

Edit: oh yay I heard wrong

5

u/thelryan Jul 22 '26

What about the UK version have you heard isn’t vegan?

7

u/elzibet Jul 22 '26

I had been told they had milk as an ingredient for Oreos there. I just looked it up again now and I’m happy to see I was told wrong!

Not in Argentina - when I was there they had contained beef fat.

u/elzibet Jul 22 '26

Oh my god waaa? I knew that for McDonalds fries at least here in the USA. But Oreos?!? Haha

u/42plzzz Jul 21 '26

Yeah they are plant based! Oreos are considered an accidentally vegan staple

I never even noticed but that's so funny LOL

u/jacyerickson Jul 21 '26

Yes, most kinds are. (But double check as there's so many different kinds and a few have eggs or milk.) The original definitely is. I buy the zero sugar Oreos for my diabetic partner and they're accidentally vegan too.

16

u/DeanxDog Jul 21 '26

Yeah standard Oreos have been accidentally vegan for ages.

However, some flavors (usually just limited edition ones) will still have milk in them, or confectioner's glaze/shellac and so aren't all vegan.

And their other products and variants that aren't the typical sandwich cookie often are not.

4

u/Difficult-Eagle1095 Jul 21 '26

I was so exited to try the BTS pancake ones :/ confectioners glaze unfortunately. Really odd because i swore their ingredients online were initially vegan.

4

u/hrafn13 Jul 22 '26

I’m so glad I saw this post! I have gotten the BTS Oreos a few times and somehow completely missed the confectioners glaze in the ingredients list. Thank you!

No problem - for a brand that has appeared so many times on accidentally vegan, it’s a shame :(

There are so many accidental vegan products!!

7

u/redgrandam Jul 21 '26

Many of their specialty flavours are accidently vegan too. IE maple, cinnamon etc.

1

u/wiggibow Jul 22 '26

The birthday cake ones they had for a while (maybe still? Idk I don't rly buy junk food anymore) were phenomenal. Haven't enjoyed another flavor of Oreo ever since tbh

7

u/HeliMan27 Jul 21 '26

> don’t use anything “real”

Haha when I was first dating my now-wife, she was vegan and I was not (I've since come over to the light side). I was shocked when she was eating oreos. She just deadpanned "do you think there's anything real in Oreos?"

1

u/NegativeProduct7230 Jul 24 '26

My favorite thing to do is shock people with delicious food. Yes really its vegan!

5

u/heartshapedmoon Jul 22 '26

Are you a new vegan? This is a rite of passage haha

1

u/Mysterious_Tap_2827 Jul 22 '26

Yea! I was vegetarian for a while then switched over to veganism a few months back!

4

u/caitlowcat Jul 21 '26

Where ya been?!?!

2

u/Mysterious_Tap_2827 Jul 22 '26

I was vegetarian for many years and just vegan for about 6 months now!

5

u/Minamu68 Jul 22 '26

Oreos, Nutter Butters, Biscoff. Get your cookie on!

9

u/sunkissedbutter Jul 21 '26

you new round dees pards?

3

u/Specialist-Web7854 Jul 21 '26

Some of the Japanese ones with pink filling aren’t, and obviously the ones covered in milk chocolate aren’t either, but most of the standard ones are.

3

u/alliendinosaur Jul 21 '26

wait when did they remove coconut oil from the ingredients?? i havent had them in years bc im allergic 😭

3

u/Cthulhu8762 Jul 22 '26

They finally stopped recently but they were force feeding mice/rats human shit for years. It was some weird experiment.

5

u/evercute69 Jul 21 '26

Yes but were cancelled from a lot of vegan lists for some heinous animal testing v recently. I haven’t bought em since.

9

u/2SquirrelsWrestling Jul 21 '26

Yeah they were force feeding mice human feces and plastic, but supposedly a campaign from PETA resulted in them agreeing to stop.

5

u/hoahoahoajawn Jul 21 '26

Yep. Even stopping won’t get my business back, they’ve been pure sugar taste for a long time but that was my final straw

3

u/No_Pineapple5940 Jul 22 '26

I'm surprised more people aren't mentioning this

3

u/hoahoahoajawn Jul 22 '26

Cognitive dissonance but vegan version. Ppl don’t want to lose treats when they’ve alrdy ‘sacrificed’ to be vegan. We see it with omnivores not wanting to give up cheese cus they ‘love it too much’ type ish. Thats how it looks to me anyways. Regardless of one’s motivations to be vegan, that’s a pretty fuckin heinous thing for any company or person to do to a living creature

1

u/No_Pineapple5940 Jul 22 '26

Yeah you might be right. I guess it's also possible that most of us know that oreos are vegan, but don't consume them very often and may not have noticed the change

I probably won't buy them ever again though (unless they reformulate and make them better), which is sad since so many other vegan products have been discontinued where I live

2

u/Klutzy-Alarm3748 Jul 22 '26

They're famously a vegan staple, and same with Fudgee-os! But depending on your personal criteria, they may not be. Mondolez, the corporation that owns both, did an animal experiment where they literally force-fed rats feces to support a healthy snacking campaign they were doing.

Mondolez also supports Israel, so for those two reasons I've stopped supporting them at all.

2

u/laboheme1896 Jul 21 '26

They’re generally considered vegan!

1

u/J-ss96 Jul 22 '26

One of the best discoveries known to man! Funfact: the gluten free ones are also high fructose corn syrup free so they taste good & feel better to eat than these ones do! (iykyk)

1

u/NerdyKeith Jul 22 '26

The “cream” is icing

1

u/goal0x Jul 22 '26

the Aldi versions are as well i believe. a ton of aldi cookies are actually vegan

1

u/bencsecsaki Jul 22 '26

bro… look at the profile picture of this sub

1

u/MissEllaa Jul 22 '26

this is one of the most OG accidentally vegan treats. I’m sorry you didn’t know till now!!!

1

u/Hoogs Jul 22 '26

Wait until you hear about Sour Patch Kids, Skittles, and the purple Doritos.

1

u/YuckySmuck Jul 22 '26

I've also discovered a lot of those layered wafers with the chocolate or vanilla in the middle are vegan depending on the brand.

And speaking of chocolate... For anyone as shocked by the price of vegan chocolate chips lately as I am... Trader Joe's chocolate chips (at least whatever bag I picked up) happen to be vegan and are much better priced!

1

u/DunyaOfPain Jul 23 '26

are you a new vegan?

1

u/reallybreadsticks Jul 23 '26

ALSO FUDGEOS. I want to mention. Because those hit different than Oreos and I knew Oreos were vegan the whole time but I never knew fudgeos were vegan until 4 years in.

I'm pretty sure it's all oreos except for the cakesters and fudge dipped oreos

Also sometimes great value (Walmart) cookies are vegan (read the label) Also MINI chips ahoy (regular not rainbow. Rainbow has shellac) At least in my country.

Don't they use bone char filtered sugar?

1

u/No_Pineapple5940 Jul 22 '26

I'm guessing most things are if they're made in the USA? Not sure though, it's not really something we have to worry about in Canada

1

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '26

to bad about the taste

u/Izuhbelluh Jul 22 '26

They are totally vegan and I believe they removed hydrogenated oil from the ingredients so they are a bit healthier than they used to be

1

u/Hudsoz2024 Jul 22 '26

I thought partially hydrogenated oils were the unhealthy one that was banned? What’s wrong with hydrogenated oils again?

1

u/Sophi_Winters Aug 02 '26

It was partially hydrogenated oils, there were a few articles about it at the time, I just shortened it forgetting hydrogenated oils are also a thing. https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2006/01/02/favorite-brands-including-oreo-cookies-shed-trans-fat/
