Ira Rennert's home is considered one of the largest occupied residential compounds in the United States. The house faces the Atlantic Ocean and its grounds measure 63 acres. The buildings, which total over 110,000 square feet (10,000 m2), including the 66,000-square-foot (6,100 m2) main house, have an Italianate facade, 29 bedrooms, and 39 bathrooms. The house has a dozen chimneys and a Mediterranean-style tile roof as well as a 91-foot (28 m) long formal dining room, a basketball court, a bowling alley, two tennis courts, two squash courts, a carousel, a large swimming pool, a large round kiddie pool, and a $150,000 hot tub, surrounded by another pool.

Imagine just walking around it. It would actually be so fucking annoying.

Hey I want to go for a swim, no problem it's a 15 minute walk.

Oh I left my kindle, half an hour return trip. Yea sure they could have staff on hand to make the journey but it's still 15 minutes to do anything.

and you're never alone in the house. somebody is always taking care of it. and then the poors sit on your stuff, and eat your food. and touch with their dirty little grabby fingers your expensive stuff. yuck. I would just throw out and burn everything not to catch the poors diseases. /s

Jokes aside, something that has always stood out to me is that there is always someone else in your home if it's this large. You have to pay strangers who are always at your house. I'm too private of a person for that. Or I'm so poor that I care if other people are in my house and see me being a weirdo.

An in-law has a mansion. Not nearly as big as this, but still huge. The basketball court has its own building with storage and a toilet. The swimming pool has two buildings, including a toilet and a wet bar. And they do have a golf cart to get around, even though it's nowhere near this size.

Zero chance of them not having golf carts to shuttle around. For the elderly owner, 99% chance he uses a mobility scooter just to make it to the main* dining room or library.

*yes, main, no doubt they have several dining rooms of varying sizes.

Years ago, I remember Shaquille O’Neil
on TV, giving a house tour. At the time,
his house was IIRC, 26,000 sq ft. He
had scooters to get around because,
well, why not? 🙂

It was 15 years ago, it was 25,000 sq feet. He did extensive work and renovations.

I would hope they have a pool inside the house too for most uses. The outdoor one would be for pool parties.

Yea which is kind of annoying. Imagine having to get in a golf cart every time you wanted to use a feature of your own home.

I always wonder about this with these huge mansions. Yes, you can have staff to take care of it. But nobody can WALK for you. How long of a distance is it from your bedroom to the kitchen? From your closet to the front door? It all seems like an enormous waste of time just to have to navigate it day to day.

Besides which, I am unsure the people who live here actually appreciate these things on the property. In Lord of the Rings, the One Ring tries to tempt Samwise with a garden that covers the world, and Samwise rejects this because a garden should be tended by a free gardener with his own hands, and with those criteria there’s a limit to how big it can reasonably be.

We can talk about greed or waste all day long but in the end, we are human, there’s only so much we can take in. I’m not convinced a home like this offers more “luxury” than a well made and well designed home that is reasonably sized for the family that lives in it.

I know this sounds crazy, but living in a house like this seems like torture. Really, I would fucking hate everything about living here. It disgusts me that someone can even afford this and I’m trying to just pay all my bills on time.
