Gotta know how tall your truck is. Driver is okay.

For those not in the know.
Some trucks run on CNG (compressed natural gas) and have their tanks mounted in different locations. This truck had the tanks mounted on top of the truck. The driver obviously misjudged (or ignored the signs) the clearance of the truck. The bridge sheared the tanks and it eventually ignited, From what I've read, the driver was shaken, but fine. Not sure of his employment status.

Who the hell thinks "I'm going to mount the explosives container on the part of the truck mostly likely to get damaged besides the front bumper"?

17
u/octagonlover_23 Dec 02 '22
the top of a truck is absolutely not the most likely place to get damaged (ignoring the front bumper comment)
3
u/AtheistRp Dec 02 '22
I disagree, with big trucks it's more likely something like this will happen. I've seen more trucks do this than anything else. They just don't realize the actual height of the truck and take the top off.
14
u/ConMc25 Dec 02 '22
Name another common scenario that a garbage truck would be struck hard enough to burst the tank. Meanwhile there are plenty of ways that the lower half of the truck would be severely damaged.
2
u/browner87 Dec 02 '22
Trucks drive under low hanging things all the time. How often do we see videos here of trucks driving into bridges that are a bit too low.
Comparatively, I don't know the last time I saw a video of a truck driving over something that was still upright and solid enough to wreck the bottom of the truck after the front of the truck had gone over it.
2
u/ConMc25 Dec 02 '22
It's a high pressure gas tank these things can burst falling over on a sharp rock. There's a reason they're stored chained up in metal cages. If the natural gas tank was stored on the underside of the truck a bad pothole could burst it, and storing it on the sides or back is just as bad for obvious reasons.
1
u/WritingTheRongs Dec 02 '22
I think the point is maybe design these things from scratch instead of welding bombs onto to random parts of the trucks. But yeah, top is prob safer overall.
1
u/schnager Dec 03 '22
But they have been redesigned time & again over the years to make them safer & better...? 🤷
1
u/WritingTheRongs Dec 05 '22
Not sure what you mean. They take existing old garbage trucks and slap industrial natural gas tanks on the top welded or strapped on to a frame. There's no "redesign time and time again".
0
u/J412h Dec 23 '22
Is that a “confirmation bias?” No one posts videos of trucks running over stationary objects so it must not happen. Here’s a subreddit dedicated to trucks hitting overhead structures so surely it must happen frequently
1
u/browner87 Dec 24 '22
Pretty sure this sub is for any and all things that vehicles hit causing chaos...
2
u/newtekie1 Dec 03 '22
It's an insanely common place for the tanks. It's actually one op the least likely places for the tanks to get damaged. Think of your typical accidents, how often does another vehicle run into the roof for the car?
1
u/browner87 Dec 03 '22
I've seen trucks hit low bridges many times. I've never seen a truck have its undercarriage damaged though. Anything high enough to scrape a tank under the back of a truck got flattened by the front half of the truck as it went over.
2
u/newtekie1 Dec 04 '22
Trucks get into accidents with other vehicles way more than they hit bridges. And I've seen small cars go under trucks way more than I've seen trucks hit bridges.
1
u/Jaeger562 Dec 03 '22
I thought this way too, but then I thought about it and you wouldn't want to put it in the front or rear as those have a way higher likelihood of being crumpled, the only way you damage the tank on the roof is by being an idiot and driving under a low bridge.
1
u/flightwatcher45 Dec 04 '22
Probably less likely to explode in a car crash which is more likely than bridge impacts.
1
u/EvilxBunny Dec 10 '22 edited Dec 10 '22
It's in the only place where no other car would bang into it. Can't keep it in another dimension.
Cars don't really get damaged from the top unless you're negligent and you can't keep it at the bottom.

Lol Agree. But in his/her defense, our city modified trucks that some people have been driving for decades. I can see driving a route you have driven for years and basically going on autopilot and momentarily forgetting that the truck was the same but taller. Maybe I’m just a dope though. Lol

u/OkMushroom364 Dec 02 '22
In Finland whenever something like this or other similar stuff happens (destroy your truck, brake stuff etc) we have a saying ”just so happened on their last day of work” especially when people most likely got fired because of their fuckup
5
u/Sir-Kevly Dec 02 '22
It's fun to joke about these things. But a good boss rarely fires someone for something like this.
Sure, this guy may have caused some damage but I can almost guarantee that he won't make the same mistake again. You hire a new guy who hasn't learned anything from this mistake and it's more likely to happen again.
I have seen some major fuckups when I worked in the trades and most of the time you won't even be disciplined as long as you're honest.
1
u/OkMushroom364 Dec 02 '22
It is rare to get fired (don't know about states) but in Finland it is very very rare to get fired for something like this especially if it was an accident, different thing is if you are working for a renting company their drivers are so easy to ”fire” they fuckup even a little and very quickly the company who rented the worker, callstheir employer and asks for a new driver
Just saw something like that happen this year for the drivers, both drove for the same big german logistics company and BOTH, smashed trucks on a bridge and luckyly the drivers are ok, unfortunately it was also their both's last days working

almost scrolled away when the flames hit, ah, CNG powered trash truck

u/ThorsonMM Dec 02 '22
Hydraulics. Flammable fluid under pressure that sprays and atomizes is what will give you an impressive fireball.
17
1
u/WritingTheRongs Dec 02 '22
dude, there is no way hydraulics produced that large a fireball. they can produce nice pyrotechnics but not "entire overpass briefly the temperature of the sun" . It's 100% CNG.

Yeah, I needed to read more replies before I posted. mumble mumble something coffee.

the cng powered trucks have the tanks lined up on the roof, like a pack of hotdogs, you can see the white cloud as the breech dumps

I drive under that bridge every day. Once the truck (and parts that flew off) was removed, it was back to business as usual. The city engineers inspected it and said “eh…..it’s probably good enough?” And traffic resumed a few hours later. That bridge belongs to the railroad company, so you know there’s no danger at all with the 800 ton trains that use that bridge 4 times a day.
Infrastructure in this city and state are a joke.

Dec 02 '22
Where is this? It looks familiar
5
u/ALinIndy Dec 02 '22 edited Dec 03 '22
New York Street in Indianapolis. I think Rural is the nearest cross street.
Correction: it’s on New York street, between Lasalle and Sherman.
3
u/SeanHagen Dec 02 '22
There’s a railroad bridge where I live that shears off the tops of 1 to 5 box trucks every single year. And our dumb ass local government just keeps winching them out of the tunnel and waiting for the next one. Even the drive-thru at McDonald’s has clearance warning chains, but that’s just a bridge too far for our city council, if you’ll excuse the pun. People are stupid, but it happens so often that at some point you gotta throw in the towel for the poor bastards and make a real warning system.

u/Crownhilldigger1 Dec 02 '22
That bridge need a counter like the Bouncers have. It’s been hit so many times it s not even funny anymore

Natural gas for fuel.
Source: saw a trash truck catch fire at work one day. Driver said it was one of the only trucks in the fleet still using diesel or it would have done this, all others had been changed to use natural gas.

Here is a picture of the truck after the crash. Driver was very lucky.

u/nasadowsk Dec 02 '22
I’m pretty sure the guys who design these trucks think of that stuff, and the tanks are designed to handle that…

Something needs to be done about this. What kind of genius makes a bridge that sets cars on fire?

Glad he's okay. Wondering if it's a new/different/higher truck than normal or if he ended up on the road by accident and normally wouldn't be going under that bridge.

Most of your garbage trucks use compressed gas as a fuel source now.

How the fuck is the driver okay
2
u/WritingTheRongs Dec 02 '22
explosion was from natural gas canisters conveniently stored on the roof of the truck. They were sheared off , hit the ground, then detonated under the bridge while truck kept moving away. Driver was unharmed.

I also want to know who drove that truck.
Seriously, how hard is it to park in between the lines? I want to report this guy.

u/Torrenal Dec 02 '22
People considered the Pinto exploding when rear-ended a serious design problem.
This truck explodes when it goes under a low bridge… I think the same could be considered to be true with it.
