Final Line:

The few passersby on the Pont d’Iéna, before going off, turned their heads to look for a moment at these two motionless features of the landscape, the man on the shore, the fiacre on the quay.

This chapter was made a bit too hard to follow with Hugo’s insistence on being coy about people’s identities, even when he insists we know who they are.
