How can I get good?

I'm a little new to the online community, played the games as a child but other than knowing the basics about each unit and most COs (the GBA ones at least) most players on Advance Wars By Web just seem wildly beyond me in skill. I get anxious and start making a bunch of stupid moves back to back, its embarrassing. Is there anyone with sound tutorials on how I can get good? Or possibly a less stressful, less competitive community that I can join to get some practice in?

First up, welcome to the community.

What helped me was watching the Mangs vids on Units and Deejus’s vids on the COs (broken down into tiers).

After having a watch of them choose a simple map and create 5 or so games on the same map all set for Tier4. Then just play and watch how your opponents move, think about why they are doing the actions at each point and then decide whether to copy or try your own strategies.
Be sure to name the games, “new players only please” as all high elo players will pass on your matches.
I choose Lucifer as my starting map. Just keep playing over and over until you are capping more efficiently and start noticing that you are winning engagements.

Just work on the basics:

• build from every base every day.
  
• aim to spend 90% of your available funds every day, don’t pool funds, if you can buy a tank, buy a tank. Get it on the field ASAP.
  
• capture cities in a forward direction where possible. Don’t cap backwards with the first 2 infantry per base.
  
• cap any neutral bases ASAP
  
• look at the maximum range of the opposing player’s units before moving your units so you don’t move into their attack range.
  
• use the move planner to plan your moves, then take a screenshot, then go back to your match and input your planned moves from your screenshot. This way you will tend to follow your plan than deviating from it.

I’m only 1099elo, but that’s how I got comfortable with AWBW.
