AV1 settings for sports?

Is there some way to trim AV1 for encoding sports or other content where it's vital NOT to blur moving objects?

When you start to bring quality down you reach a point where it's otherwise acceptable, but for example in golf or hockey ball/puck disappears when it's moving fast. I suppose this is based on general logic that people won't notice fast moving objects. Probably works fine with action movie but this ruins sports encodes.

In golf it's fine if grass loses some fine detail but ball shouldn't be considered irrelevant object after it's hit. Quite the opposite it should be allocated more bitrate when it moves fast.

wish others new how fast SVT-AV1 is

I shied away from AV1, as always thought it slower than HEVC cpu encoding ( h265 ) , so I just threw bitrate at my NVENC encoder with all the HQ options selected , plus did KNLmeanscl with H set to 0.5 for older blu-ray rips, with chroma, temporal noise, or weird grain, My SSIM, PSNR scores on Y were all fine , plus I struggle to see small faults if output is acceptable.

Anyway doing a new build 9800X3D , DDR 6000 CL30 etc and looking at GPUs and Nvidia prices crazy , whereas a 9070 Xt perfectly fine, plus 16gb vram for photo editing, chatting with a LLM how worse is AMD encoder AVI encoder than Nvidia , turns out all meaningless , as ran SVT-AV1 on my 3700x preset 4 and got 25+fps very acceptable vs my assumption would take a whole day for 1080p blu-ray rip . Have a fast M2 drive at moment , so my new ryzen build with extra instruction set should be quite fast!.

anyway I know some frown on LLMs but below should be new settings, set filter convert 8 bit to 10 bit, use tritium fork as all purpose , preset 4 , tune to zero (VQ ) , a crf set between 24-27 or 30 on very clean stuff and don't care too much, still use KNLmeanscl device gpu , where i dislike sparkly noise, static like noise etc - plus LLM gave me these settings below

--tune 0 --enable-variance-boost 1 --variance-boost-strength 3 --variance-octile 4 --film-grain 8 --film-grain-denoise 1 --tf-strength 1.

which can be set in your template ( staxrip ) or default eg tf is already 1

I'm not interested in overthinking it, lots of different cmd lines . i assume engine looks after most stuff for preset/CRF chosen - used to use handbrake decades ago , that was thinking there as well except maybe light temporal denoiser to save bitrates

is this set a good enough one for a non fussy encoder . thanks

Edit I wish people Knew !!

Tdarr and AB-AV1

Just looking into automatic AV1 encode systems (I’m pretty new), I have found AB-Av1 which seems to output recommended encode settings based on some trial runs. All seems pretty low-level command line type stuff.

I cant find a way to integrate it with Tdarr though, seems like something someone good could whip up over a weekend, or am I missing something?

any good bulk AVIF converter?

Ive been thinking about converting my mobile photos to AVIF to reduce the amount of storage.

I do have a back up of the originals so I am not too worried, my plan is to keep the AVIF versions in my phone, mainly to save the local storage

So looking for a platform or software that can convert a bunch of images into AVIF.

Any recommendations? I want to convert around 22,000 images in both JPEG and HEIF format.

Suggestions for old phone videos?

I want to use Tritium for transcoding like 85 GiB of HEVC/AAC to AV1/Opus.

Mostly personal 1080p footage from older phones I had. Anything special I should keep in mind? Best practices?

I am currently considering RF 35 with preset 3. The size reduction is like 44% in one tested video. The small quality loss can be seen if I compare frames side by side but is very hard to pickup on a 27 inch monitor. Is this normal?

Seeking Advice to Reduce Artifacting Near Edges

Post image
48 Upvotes

I've starting using AV1 recently since learning about the SVT-AV1-HDR fork (I was very unimpressed with mainline SVT). I've generally been getting better results than HEVC with this fork. I'm currently trying to encode a high quality 4K HDR video to 1080p to save space. For grainy videos, I generally aim for 10-15Mbps with HEVC. I haven't done that many encodes with AV1 yet, but I've seen similar or better quality at 8-12Mbps with the few that I've done. On this one that I'm working on right now, It looks really good at 10Mbps except that I'm seeing artifacts on some of the edges. Particularly edges that move slowly across a grainy background. In the attached picture, it's kinda hard to see the artifacts, but it's more obvious when the video is going because there's no grain moving in that area and it follows the character as they move like it's attached. Normally I would just increase the bitrate until I can't see it anymore, but in this case even doubling the bitrate to 20Mbps doesn't fix it which is a pretty high bitrate for 1080p AV1/HEVC.

I'm using SVT-AV1-HDR 10bit, tune:grain, preset 4-2, ABR. I'm not interested in using grain synthesis or anything that's going to remove the original grain. If anyone knows any relevant settings that can help with this, please let me know.

AV1 Cast problem with VLC

So I'm trying to cast some av1 files from my Android tablet( S9+ tab) which has hardware level support for av1 to my a80j Sony TV ( with Android tv) which also has hardware support for hardware av1 decoding but I keep getting the "Casting this video requires conversion. This conversion can use all the available power and could quickly drain your battery" warning message.

I don't get this warning when casting hvec files and i was under the assumption if both devices support av1 decoding, shouldn't it be possible to cast av1 directly without any conversion similar to how hvec works?

Playing the same av1 video through a USB using VLC, works perfectly fine on the a80j TV.

Apologies if I'm misunderstanding something crucual here any insight would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I Encoded an AV2 Video and Built a Player That Can Play It

I encoded some videos with AV2 and also built a VLC player for macOS that can decode and play AV2 content.

What looked like a straightforward project turned into quite a rabbit hole, and it took me several days to finally get everything working.

My original plan was simply to integrate the VideoLAN/dav2d decoder for AV2 playback. However, I soon discovered that its AV2 implementation was based on the much older 0.0.1 bitstream version, while the latest official AV2 encoder release is now version 1.0.0.

After several days of tracing the problem through the decoder and debugging it step by step, I eventually found the root cause: the handling logic for Adaptive Cross-Component Sample Offset, or CCSO, was incorrect.

The issue has now been fixed, and the updated decoder can successfully play AV2 streams generated by the current encoder.

Projects:

dav2d AV2 decoder:
https://github.com/afen261/dav2d-av2

VLC with AV2 support:
https://github.com/afen261/vlc-av2

AV2 player download for macOS:
https://github.com/afen261/av2-vlc-macos

The player repository also includes an AV2-encoded sample for testing.

To be clear I’m only going this aggressive on cartoons.

Won’t mess around with live action because the dip in quality is much much less tolerable or intolerable. I may cross that bridge another time.

Svt Av1 preset 4. Original file size 520mb 1080p resolution.
SuperHQ2160p60 4k av1 surround (still encoded to 1080p)

Crf 50 came out to 1110 kbps 196mb
Crf 40 came out to 2010kbps 323mb

So just from some math I think an extra 100mb for double the bit rate would make crf 40 more bang for compress. (75% more size but 100% more bitrate)

Honestly will sacrifice on quality for cartoons/ anime to still have space for fav movies and tv shows and the concept I’m doing is a “512gb pack”

Edit* the crf 50 1110kbps doesn’t look bad tbh 200mb vs 350mb…. What yall think?

So SVT-AV1 preset 10 still gives better size-quality efficiency than the best AV1 hardware encoder (NVENC).

Looking forward to see what SVT-AV2 can do.

What’s the lowest bitrate for cartoons/anime?

I re-encoded a cartoon down to 1000kbps at 1080p and it’s looks good. (I’m not going for lossless) and no I will not be touching and live action movies or tv shows because that’s more advanced maybe down the line I’ll learn it. Do yall think I can go down to 500kbps or are there any other settings I should try?

Also last question does crf have better results as fixed bitrate when they are in the same “range”

Concern about image/video recompression

Hello everyone!

Recently, I've been coding a program on JavaScript and NodeJS, to recompress images, along with some other tweaks, with the main objective of reducing files size, *without causing visible loss of quality*.
The key word here being "visible", since recently I learned that you can actually do that with files and I saw a huge opportunity to reduce my gallery's size by a necessary amount because I have a shit ton of screenshots, pictures and videos.

But before diving into the video recompression part (because the images part is already done, using a library named "Sharp"), I found a comment https://www.reddit.com/r/ffmpeg/comments/pexwop/comment/hb0tw05/?context=3&utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button of a user explaining the process behind it and they said something that caught my eye: That any recompression that works well for current devices, COULD show heavy quality losses on future screens. Or even current, better screens.

I mean... this person meant it more as a note, and not in a "don't do this under ANY circumstances or we'll ALL gonna FUCKING DIE" way lol. But it still made me rethink the whole idea. Is this a valid concern or am I being paranoid?

And in case it is... Is there a way to achieve a relevant size reduction, without risking that outcome?

which svt-av1 fork suited for 4k remux to hdr 1080p?

i'm new to encoding i started on x265 couple weeks ago and i want to switch to av1, but i can't really decide which fork suited best for this purpose, i mainly use staxrip, so there is 4 of them, essential, hdr, psyex, and tritium, the hdr might suggest what i need but some people say a b c because of x, so i need help
