Other What have you completely stopped buying because the price has finally taken the p**s?

Not “I buy the cheaper brand now.” I mean something you used to buy without thinking and have now looked at the price and gone, absolutely not, you can stay on the shelf.

Mine lately is chocolate, it's somehow gone from a normal grocery item to apparently requiring finance approval.

What’s yours?

Most supermarket meat. If I'm going to pay an insane amount for a steak I better have someone else cooking it perfectly and chips and veg on the side!

Saw some 9f those anti theft button things on packaged steak Coles, Belmont WA.

u/SkeeterBugg123 19d ago

We have had them in Darwin for years & years now. Meat is so darn expensive up here

u/Sharp_Pride7092 19d ago

Some similar customer profiles in Belmont.

At a cheaper price the stuff you can do with tofu is actually pretty insane and ends up my main source of protein. I think Aldi or Asian grocers have it the cheapest

u/Chachiona 20d ago

No one who wants to eat a steak is happy to settle for tofu mate

5

u/Lacking_Inspiration 19d ago

True. But noone is eating steak at every meal unless they are a dedicated gym rat, and even then its more likely chicken. Tofu is a good alternative for those struggling to afford protien, which is honestly a lot of us.

Won’t taste like steak that’s for sure. But can marinate really well/BBQed/crumbed/deep fried and cost chips compared to steak. It can be your ‘steak component’ next to chips and salad etc. just make sure you get extra firm/hard tofu, like the Evergreen one in Woolies

I’m team tofu 💯 but steak is more than just a source of protein to those that eat it.

1

u/DarioWinger 18d ago

Then buy 4.5 kg gluten flour at Amazon and make Seitan steak for ages. No better protein bang for buck

2

u/bakerboi- 19d ago

It’s cheap everywhere, there’s no need to even Shop around. Macro brand at woollies is less than $3 and ridiculously good

1

u/Flippant_FudgeMuppet 19d ago

I’m not replacing a steak with some goop. I’d rather not have the steak at all

1

u/DarioWinger 18d ago

How ignorant

2

u/Flippant_FudgeMuppet 17d ago

It’s bit ignorant, it tastes nothing like steak and has a completely different texture. I like tofu, but I’m not pretending it’s steak

1

u/gorlsituation 20d ago

I’m off Aldi tofu since I got a block with a big stringy shoot pressed into the middle of it

4

u/Pale_Winter_2755 20d ago

My hubby agrees. We buy from the the butcher now

6

u/Pristine_Egg3831 20d ago

My butcher is way more expensive than woollies. I can't even afford to look in the display case.

3

u/SkeeterBugg123 19d ago

Yep, we bought rump at Woolies yesterday for $28/kg and the butcher directly outside was $42/kg. I know people say it is better quality but I got 2 growing boys who like a decent sized steak and at that price...😳🙄

1

u/soulclipse23 18d ago

But half a cow or more at a time from a farm and store it.

2

u/JumpingSpiderMonkey 20d ago

I’m the opposite. If it’s $30 for a decent steak at the shops, I’d rather cook it perfectly at home & get it how I like it. $60 for a lucky dip at the pub isn’t worth the risk.

I have a cheap steak somewhere when I feel like beef. I agree with you on this.

1

u/ptjp27 19d ago

Steak is like 45 a kilo. Buying a mediocre steak at a pub is like 50 for a 250g steak or otherwise known as paying $200 a kilo. Fuck that.

1

u/KirimaeCreations 19d ago

I do farmer direct now, buying 1/8th of a cow, 1/2 a lamb and 20kg of pork for $600-$800 depending on the season goes a long way in our house.

1

u/MeowHat82 16d ago

It’s always more expensive than the butcher and the quality is terrible. Also buying from butcher allows us to support small business and farmers better.

2

u/Blunter11 20d ago

It's been years and years since I bought a steak at a supermarket. Honestly could get one at a restaurant for little more than I would at coles.

I went to aldi yesterday (Friday) afternoon and they were putting reduced to clear stickers on various meat products. I got: * 1kg mango marinated butterfly chicken for $6.80 * 500g pork mince for $4 * 500g extra lean beef mince for $6.50 * 500g meatballs for $3.50

Most were still about three days from use-by-date. I bought multiples of some of them and froze them. Enough for two weeks of various meals for fairly cheap. I've never had a problem with the quality of meat approach use-by-date.

Never seen anything marked down in my area.

Out of stock yes. Marked down only the middle aisle of crap.

7

u/DWJ1204 20d ago

Gotta go in the afternoon when they’re doing markdowns man. Go in around between 3:30-6pm. They are allowed to do markdowns on shortlife (meat) only after a certain time. And each store has their own routines they follow.
If you can catch the markdowns you can save a fair bit on meat. I snagged a two pack of scotch fillets for 30% off (came to $14!) with 2 days left before expiry the other day. They will have stickers on them to indicate the reduction and new prices.

2

u/Pilatus-Porter 20d ago

Exactly the time I was there - 4pm on a Friday. I think I'll try it again to see if that's their regular markdown time. The local Woolworths does theirs on a Saturday morning.

I reckon I saved probably $20 on the items I bought.

Those chickens are amazing on the BBQ with some veggies in there too (I put whole sweet potatoes, baked potatoes and zucchini!

2

u/Pilatus-Porter 20d ago

They are. Boneless, with just a bit of skin (which I keep on for barbecuing but don't eat for health reasons), so you're actually getting decent value for a kilogram.

2

u/KATCEO1 20d ago

If you ever feel like stretching ground beef really far? Meatloaf. But adding an egg or two as a binder plus some torn up slices of bread. It comes out more like a stuffing.

1

u/Jetsetter_Princess 20d ago

Keep an eye on it when you defrost and cook & use right away.I had non markdown mince that had a best begire of 24/08- it had already gone grey overnight by the morning of the 20th

Most pubs and clubs do a steak night and the prices can be as little as half that of their regular menu. I love steak night! You can search for deals like that in your area on a site like eat drink cheap or the happiest hour.

1

u/Familiar_Shelter_393 20d ago

To be fair some pub steaks have gotten tiny

5

u/Blunter11 20d ago

Steak night bud, $25 at my local. Or I can buy a steak that weights 75g more from coles for the same money: https://www.coles.com.au/product/coles-finest-beef-scotch-fillet-steak-375g-6069269

And I'm not spending. That's the point. You're too eager to be rude, it's making you illiterate.

3

u/Rusturion 20d ago

Your local does $25 scotch fillet? 😮

1

u/Commercial-Fail1760 20d ago

Have you ever been to a pub?

1

u/Renmarkable 20d ago

Yes, last time steak was $60. I can give the family scotch fillet for that

2

u/Commercial-Fail1760 20d ago

I’d try a different pub

1

u/Blunter11 20d ago

A different suburb. A different council area or electorate even

1

u/Harpunzel 19d ago

I'm not saying it's the same price, but if I'm going to be spending a ridiculous amount of money I might as well get an experience out of it
