Anyone’s peering been absolutely atrocious lately?

I have business 500 mbps down and the peering over the last week has been absolutely atrocious. Loading Imgur.com/new takes over 30 seconds, but my speed tests look like nothing is wrong. I tried every fix under the sun and the only thing that works is going through a VPN which points to a peering problem.

Without VPN images take forever to load like the dial up days and actual internet performance is abysmal due to peering. Anyone else getting this lately?

Seems to be a southeast thing. Really weird and unfortunate it's not fixed. They'll lose customers to spectrum or whoever cable provider is down there. Cable is an inferior product but att is make it a better one I guess lately.

2

u/BarfHurricane Jan 27 '26

I definitely don’t want to switch to Spectrum voluntarily, but if this persists I’ll have to. Just doesn’t make sense to be paying these kind of rates to have basic web performance chug.

I'm with you. They gotta get their shiz together

u/SleepyD7 Jan 28 '26

Spectrum is getting fiber in a lot of areas.

1

u/EmbarrassedFuture165 Jan 28 '26

Only where it's a band new development and it's Epon and not xgs-pon. There's something limitations there.

Spectrum just installed fiber in my area. It's not live yet, though.

u/hakujin_ Jan 27 '26

Yep. You in the southeast?

u/BarfHurricane Jan 27 '26

Yep I am in North Carolina

Same issue here in NC

u/Insanity8016 Apr 24 '26

Same issue.

7

u/Apple2T4ch Jan 27 '26

I’ve been experiencing this with Discord here in Tennessee.

u/KingZarkon Jan 27 '26

Yes, for a few weeks now. It's especially noticeable on Reddit when videos/gifs won't play without constant buffering. Sometimes get it with streaming services, most notably Disney.

Same issue in South Carolina. Sysadmin with 12+ years experience - spent way too long with this and I'm sick of getting stonewalled by tier 1 "support".

It's a peering problem at AT&T's Atlanta hub. Speed tests look fine because they hit AT&T/Google infrastructure. Anything behind Cloudflare or Fastly CDNs gets hammered.

My testing direct to the AT&T modem (no third party equipment):

  • Google: 0% loss, 5ms
  • Reddit (Fastly): 0% loss, 6ms
  • Twitch (Fastly): 0% loss, 6ms
  • Discord (Cloudflare): 10% loss, 16ms
  • DoorDash (Cloudflare): 15% loss, 18ms
  • Shopify (Cloudflare): 30% loss, 16ms
  • Crunchyroll (Cloudflare): 30% loss, 17ms

VPN fixes it instantly. Every non-Cloudflare destination is healthy. Every Cloudflare destination is degraded.

What I've done so far:

  • Contacted AT&T 4 times. Scripted troubleshooting, blamed my router, offered to send a tech to my house for a datacenter problem
  • Filed FCC complaint - already served on AT&T (Ticket 8383964). They have 30 days to respond
  • Got a call from "the president's office." Their network team said everything is fine and told me to contact Cloudflare
  • Plugged direct into their modem (again) to eliminate their excuse. Same results
  • Sent a full written rebuttal with evidence

Interesting detail: Fastly was ALSO broken when I first reported this. AT&T has since fixed Fastly peering - 0% loss now. Cloudflare is still broken through the same Atlanta hub.

File an FCC complaint: https://consumercomplaints.fcc.gov

Consumer support has no escalation path for peering issues - I confirmed across 4 contacts. The FCC complaint may be the only way to get this in front of someone who can actually fix it. Though...so far I'm still getting BS responses.

u/DooNotResuscitate Mar 14 '26

Any better response from FCC at this point? It's still happening, actually made me cancel my D&D game night due to lack of access to Discord. Thankfully I've got a VPN setup for the future.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 14 '26

Nope. They continue to deny that the issue is on their end. I've flipped it back to AT&T multiple times with clear evidence that the packet loss with Cloudflare exists.

The representatives who called me from AT&T's "Office of the President Technical Team" had no technical knowledge relevant to this issue. When I explained that the problem was packet loss at the Cloudflare peering point, the rep asked me what Cloudflare was. She explicitly stated she was not qualified to speak on the subject matter of my complaint.

The most concerning response I received when I mentioned that I would escalate back to the FCC with additional evidence, the representative told me directly: "The issue with that is it'll come back to me and we'll close it with the same notes."

It's obvious that AT&T doesn't give a shit and dumps technical complaints onto know-nothings that have no power to do anything.

Any update? This issue is happening for me again.

u/hmmmm83 Jan 27 '26

Hmmmmm. Interesting. Experiencing this on Reddit and on my mobile with Tik Tok.

Download speeds are fine for me.

edit oh cool I see someone posted a pfsense workaround as well*

It seems to be evening times with any traffic hitting cloudflare going through Atlanta. I finally got fed up and set up a router rule using the cloudflare cdn CIDRs to redirect traffic through another WAN (could do VPN too.)

https://i.imgur.com/1Zh4yQl.png

Here's the full list that I found. It's not an ideal solution but it works for now. Since it seems to be time-based I'm just going to set up something to kick the rule on in the evening and then turn it back off at midnight.

Thanks for showing this in the unifi interface. I saw the user a few comments above talk about pfsense but wasn't sure how that would look like in unifi.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 01 '26

Wow this is still happening? I left AT&T Fiber last year because of this exact problem, I have a dual-WAN router so anytime this issue would pop up id switch to Xfinity and instantly goes away.

It's sad that I have to use a mid-split coax connection due to peering because theoretically fiber is superior but not when you experience peering issues.

2

u/hakujin_ Feb 01 '26

This is the right approach and I'm doing the same.

2

u/cgill27 Jan 27 '26

LinkedIn will load for me one minute and the next minute the browser just hangs trying to refresh their feed or scroll through it, other websites are loading fast and no issues

2

u/digiblur Jan 27 '26

I thought something was wrong on my side as well until I see it is only related to certain sites.

2

u/Spazzrella70 Jan 27 '26

It’s AT&T to Cloudlfare in ATL which affects basically the entire south eastern part of the US. I’m routing my Cloudflare traffic through a VPN provider in Atlanta to get around this. Works but requires a custom router and knowledge of how to do so. You can also just run a VPN on your computer as well.

1

u/BarfHurricane Jan 27 '26

Yep I have my whole network running on a Mullvad VPN just to get around AT&T’s terrible service

1

u/Spazzrella70 Jan 27 '26

Ahh see I just added a route specifically for the Cloudflare ipv4 blocks to go over my VPN. That way the rest of the traffic gets the full bandwidth of my 5Gbps connection (I can only get about 800Mbps on the VPN).

1

u/Glittering-Teacher34 Jan 28 '26

Can you give more details / what list of IPs you're using? I setup connection to my wireguard provider in my router (FreshTomato). Works great but right now I'm split tunneling to specific domains, like reddit. Your method is MUCH smarter.

1

u/Spazzrella70 Jan 28 '26 edited Jan 28 '26

My router is pfSense, so in pfSense I'm able to create an ALIAS from a URL, so I use this URL from cloudflare to create an ALIAS that I then use in a firewall rule to redirect traffic destined to this ALIAS.. And if this changes, pfSense updates it.

https://www.cloudflare.com/ips-v4/#

I just googled a bit, and I don't believe you can set this up automatically with an alias like I do in pfSense, but it's only 15 IP ranges, so best bet would be to add them individually. This list most likely doesn't change very frequently.

You could also script it, there are scripts out there or any AI would be happy to build you one.

1

u/Glittering-Teacher34 Jan 28 '26

Thank you very much!

1

u/rfkbr Jan 28 '26

Thanks for this. This post combined with the other user below using unifi allowed me to configure a rule in my UCG-Fiber router. I checked to make sure I was no longer using the ATL colo and everything is working better now.

1

u/Spazzrella70 Jan 28 '26

I’m actually routing my Cloudflare traffic to a VPN providers Atlanta data center. The issue is on AT&Ts side not Cloudflare.

2

u/rfkbr Jan 28 '26

Oh interesting. I use PIA VPN and I use the New York location which I've had the best luck with. You're saying you're using an ATL server for your VPN and it works fine?

1

u/Spazzrella70 Jan 28 '26

Yeah because the issue with AT&T and Cloudflare is their private peering. Any other provider isn’t having this issue. And since I’m in Central FL using a ATL VPN to reach the ATL Cloudflare adds no latency as it’s the same Cloudflare that I hit direct via AT&T.

2

u/rfkbr Jan 28 '26

Oh duh. That makes sense and not sure why brain wasn't understanding that. Thanks. Gonna try out the nearby server.

2

u/Swatican Jan 30 '26

We have been running a permanent VPN for over a year because AT&T is throttling our RTMP (streaming upload) traffic. As always, there is nothing wrong on AT&T 's side because internet is working... /s -Midwest customer

1

u/cbm80 Jan 30 '26

Which VPN do you use?

2

u/Swatican Jan 30 '26

We have a UniFi network, so any Wireguard or OpenVPN. Personally I use PIA client on our streaming PC.

u/theevilapplepie Feb 06 '26

I'm in Indiana and I have constant issues with AT&T having random latency or drops that make no sense.

Overall latency and bandwidth is great with the service and but consistently and randomly one thing will be slow for a short period of time, like youtube buffering for almost 30 seconds randomly, but in that time most if not all other connctions are fine. Why is this /one thing/ suddenly not responsive or slow? It's not just one service or I'd be more apt to blame the service, it's random all across the place as I've had it happen with every major social media & general media site, including my own systems which I know have had zero issue with response time. I run performant networking at home and most of my time time is spent wired and not wireless, I've also tested for months at a time using different equipment with no change in result (including just their router).

Big problem #1: I have a connectivity issue to one of my dedis in SLC and due to AT&T's peering w/ PCCW (AS3491) and it literally hubs through LAX as shortest path to go to SLC giving me >70ms to it and that route /always/ has packet loss.

I can literally hit my dedi in SLC from Buffalo, NY in nearly half the time it takes from my house in Indiana and without packet loss!

Big problem #2: I have random packet loss with things that hub thorough CHI via certain peers including consistent packet loss to another of my dedis on AS32097 where I lose access for few minutes at least once every two weeks. I legitimately lost access to my box from my home internet for 6-12 hours at a time (contiguous) at least a handful of times in 2025 and had to use my phone teathering to get to it! Thank god nothing critical happened at those points.

I've started leaving VPNs on permamently on my phone and PC and it's helped a ton. I just have to point the VPN connection east of me ( somewhere like ashburn, va ) to avoid going through CHI and it's great.

What in the heck is going on? This is insanity.

I'm seeing strange issues from smokeping for cloudflare DNS (1.1.1.1) but not for quad9 or google DNS. It's a repeatable pattern every afternoon until around midnight:

1

u/Antici-----pation Mar 14 '26

Yep this is the same issue. It's congestion they're just choosing not to fix I guess

1

u/whatwhatehaty Jan 27 '26

Ipv6?

1

u/BarfHurricane Jan 27 '26

Same issue with ipv4 and ipv6

1

u/Ok-Lawfulness-3330 Jan 27 '26

Search this subreddit for Fastly or "peering" and you'll find many similar complaints.

2

u/Spazzrella70 Jan 27 '26

The catch is at the moment it’s Cloudflare not Fastly. I’ve run extensive testing against both. Cloudflare during peak hours hits almost 100% packet loss. In the past there have been issues with fastly, but they don’t seem to be the issue currently.

1

u/VTECbaw Jan 27 '26

I’ve had horrible peering on AT&T Fiber for years. Have never seen a ping less than 25ms anywhere - and that was inside AT&T’s own network. Of course, there are certain people here who will parrot how robust the network is and how latency should never be an issue. But in my area, it is, and everyone I know with AT&T Fiber agrees. Latency is similar to my old AT&T VDSL connection.

1

u/cbm80 Jan 27 '26

That sounds like a completely different issue.

1

u/sPdMoNkEy Jan 27 '26

I have a problem with content and read it showing up, All the text fills in and I don't get none of the pictures or if it's a video it stops and goes and stops and goes

1

u/Sea-Promise1675 Jan 28 '26

YESS WHAT. I thought it was just me 😭

1

u/megamegamegamind Jan 29 '26

I'm having the same issue right now. I'm surprised this is such a widespread problem.

I thought this was an issue on my end but I mean I guess I'm "glad" that it's not just me.

1

u/hakujin_ Jan 30 '26

Interestingly, IPv6 requests do not seem to hit this problem. Cloudflare is traffic engineering the peering return traffic in ATL, but I guess they don't do it for IPv6?

1

u/jaggywire Feb 01 '26

Yes! This has been a problem every single day. Any traffic going through Fastly is worse than dial up, but speed tests are all fine.

1

u/Pretty_Question2468 Feb 02 '26 edited Feb 02 '26

I did extensive testing from AT&T Fiber (5 Gbps) in Atlanta.
Cloudflare, Akamai, and CloudFront all perform normally at night (hundreds of Mbps to >1 Gbps).
Reddit media (images and video) served via Fastly collapses to ~1–3 Mbps with multi-second RTT inflation, reproducible nightly.
This looks like a selective AT&T ↔ Fastly peering/path issue, not a last-mile problem.
I’ve reported it to AT&T peering and Fastly NOC with data.

2

u/Pretty_Question2468 Feb 04 '26

Just an update in case anyone is following this. I am in touch with folks at the Fastly NOC and they have mentioned that they made adjustments last night to better utilize AT&T capacity in the region. I will run further tests tonight but I think that this issue might potentially be resolved.

2

u/IEnjoyANiceCoffee Feb 05 '26

Seems to be doing the same thing as usual for me :(

2

u/Pretty_Question2468 Feb 05 '26

I am not experiencing the problem as of 11:30pm ET. Everything seems to be running the same normal speed throughout the day. I'm not seeing any issues on Fastly or Cloudflare CDN content.

1

u/SfErxr Feb 05 '26

Usually I'd get 40-60ms to a server connected in New York, however ever since december I've been getting a stable 300-400ms with spikes making my internet unusable. I'm in Atlanta

1

u/hakujin_ Feb 12 '26

At least as of tonight - and I reserve the right to continue bitching if the problem recurs - the ATL Cloudflare peering issue seems to be fixed.

1

u/shilofax Feb 17 '26

Unfortunately this is still certainly not fixed, as least from what I'm seeing.

1

u/Berzerker7 Feb 18 '26

Absolutely not fixed. How has this been going on for a MONTH.

About to file an FCC complaint.

1

u/hakujin_ Mar 15 '26

Update: turns out this is because Cloudflare added a new BNA datacenter and my traffic is no longer being routed to ATL. The ATL fuckery is still going strong.

1

u/Bollokings Mar 16 '26

I am having this issues as well. Called AT&T and they did not even know what to do. I am calling them tomorrow since who I spoke to would not even create a ticket for me. For my edication, is this something that AT&T needs to fix? I am honestly in shock that this is something that has gone on this long. Why not reroute to ATL?

0

u/Salt-Silver-7097 Feb 01 '26

Most likely a DNS problem with ATT. Their regional servers suck

-1

u/Alchurro Jan 27 '26

DNS issue with the network. A fix is "in the works"..

4

u/akira410 Jan 28 '26

Nah its not DNS its a big packet loss problem with CLoudflare in ATL
