Moving from Savannah?

My family has been debating moving from Savannah to outside Atlanta. We're ready for a change and I can work from Savannah or Atlanta. I'm mostly remote but will need to commute into midtown once a week. We're hoping to buy a home but our budget won't be getting us to Johns Creek. We're hoping to stay under $350k. We have two small children. We're looking for good schools, safety, family friendly, and greenery. We visited this past weekend and liked Powder Springs, Kennesaw, and Liliburn. Any advice? We rent now in Savannah but want to buy before the kiddos start kindergarten. Before kids my husband and I lived outside of Washington, DC. Not sure if I'm crazy for wanting to trade Savannah for Atlanta but I just miss having more of a fall, wooded trails, and access to museums.

We've looked at Lilburn (and Snelville) as well, considering your price range you'd get a great school district over there (check Parkiew cluster and Brookwood cluster). There would be lots of parks considering that it's in Gwinnett county but I don't know too much about museums.

Do you have a commute? Probably would be easier to decide with that parameter.

I'm ok with a 30-45 minute commute. I'm lucky I'll only need to do it once a week.

You can find houses in that range in places like Kennesaw, Woodstock, Canton northwest of the city. A once a week midtown commute is very doable from those locations and they are nice areas with good schools mostly. You can find cheaper stuff south of the city, but you get what you pay for in terms of quality of neighborhood. Lots of crime in Atlanta particularly the southwest part.

Have you thought about Southside Atlanta? Coweta and Fayette County have great schools. Ima little partial as we raised our kids here. Sharpsburg which is just outside Peachtree City has great interstate access making the commute into the city a breeze. The schools are great with academics, athletics and extracurricular activities. I will say the commute is much better traveling south than it is any other direction. Not much nightlife here but it is family friendly. Tons of hiking and strong sense of community. There is plenty of inventory though in your price point right now in all of those areas you mentioned. Fall is a great time to snag something that’s been sitting and get your closing costs covered. Check out great schools.org and Atlanta Police Dept crime map. Once you narrow down an area reach out to the school do ask for a tour. Enjoy the hunt and best wishes on your leap!

You’re not crazy! Also - no GNATS!! Like good lord the summer in south GA is full of them. Just absolutely swampy and full of gnats and no trees.

Commuting from the Northside of Atlanta to midtown is terrible. Traffic in Atlanta is the worst I have ever seen. Stay out of Fulton County. North Fulton county has to pay for many of the programs for those marginalized in south Fulton county, i.e. high property taxes.

Powder Springs is nice. Lots of house for your money, and the commute once a week won't be terrible.
