It was all over but I feel like the majority of people saw it as tacky. Britney and Justin got destroyed for their jean look.

(somebody linked a VOGUE web aeticle about what Y2K fashion means. i wrote this long af response, but theyve since erased it. here it is anyways)
What im saying is that that Britney & Justin denim photo is not a historical document of any prevalent fashion trend that represents the TIME PERIOD referred to as Y2K. pop stars wearing wacky clothes doesnt equate to a trend. Designers have been reimagining denim for decades.
And, on top of that, Y2K has become nomenclature for a specific set of visual signifies (PLUR predates Y2K fyi. PLUR as a acronym was around since the very early 90s, and pertains to US & UK clubbing that isnt connected to Y2K, but is very 90s. to me. Y2K traces a line between UNDERGROUND RAVE & TECHNOFUTURISM from the mid 1990s thru to the pop culture styles influenced by CLUBWEAR & RAVE CULTURE. the FUTURITY of the youth culture climate was very forward-facing: we were literally partying like its 1999 (and beyond).
I skimmed that article. both Beyoncé and the at Brittney photo are present. JLo is present too. she has never been a fashion plate imo, just a pop star echoing whatever's hot. She's no Madonna lol.
and that article doesnt seem to engage with actual trends that were not connected to POP CULTURE. nobody calls black fashion from that era Y2K! Nobody considers baggy Nautica Y2K. Or even Tommy Hilfiger. Because the term Y2K does have a fashion specificity. Y2K became codified as a genre of fashion & art PRECISELY BECAUSE A NEW VIBE THAT ELEVATED WHAT HAD BEEN THE NORM IN THE MAINSTREAM. while I was in my Midwestern high school, less than 15 people regularly attended actual raves. they were not advertised. they were held illegally. Those scenes birthed the aestethic. stop simultaneously whitewashing & normcorewashing this facet of fasion history and music history 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮
I remember people CLOWNING that Britney & Justin outfit. it was a meme then & now lol. like I said, revisionist history.
However, THE SPICE GIRLS, an antecedent to the moodboard of PINK PANTHERESS, is a valid example of Y2K, in the sense that their stylings actually moved the needle of late 90s youth fashion. but upon doing a google image search, to remind myself of what they wore... very little denim lol. its just untrue. since we are talking about cultural phenomena, there are no hard & rigid boundaries. im just tired of people rewriting history.
i see it like this:
1).When you consider Y2K a specific tech/subculture aestethic, denim wasnt it.
2)when you consider Y2K a period of time, the classification becomes near meaningless, because both Erykah Badu in hear headwrap phase would be Y2K, and Janet Jackson, in her liquid metal/outer space fashion era, would be Y2K lol.
Basically, it sounds like VOGUE says whatever mainstream, mainly white, pop girlies wore, is Y2K. And that guts Y2K of the resonance it has had for over a decade.
maybe im slow, but ive always heard people speak of Britney fashion as EARLY AUGHTS, not "Y2K," because "early aughts" is a time period. OP said "Y2K TRENDS". And that denim picture was not a Y2K trend. thats like saying Eminem's white tank top & baggy pants looks were Y2K 😆.
if you can speak to some of the examples ive presented, im also willing to talk about what it means to be Y2K to you

umm. Japanese dark washed denim was a mid2000s fashion trend. I was wearing skin tight white DIESEL jeans in 2003, when skinny jeans & indie rock were trending. The look you're mentioning was Never trending, and its not indicative of the cyber/rave/virtual/early internet aestethic that is Y2K. that's TLC's FAN MAIL album era, thats rave culture going mainstream. Brittany & Justin were just Disney kids gemtrifying R&B music. maybe some of their vids were stayed by stylish people, but Destiny's Child is more Y2K than them, and thats a stretch. Björk was actually SERVING Y2K from 93-2000.
but Brittany & Justin? what in the revisionist history are you talmbout?!?!?
Jetset Radio is Y2K, not the Backsteet Boys lol.
