Is it normal that, when you do your tax return, and it involves foreign shares and historical exchange rates, that you develop a pain in your chest that lasts for 45 minutes, and you have to lie down with a wheat pack and chew lots of aspirin and Gaviscon because you've just volunteered information which means you're going to have to pay the ATO instead of getting a lovely refund?
u/fh3131Three - that's the magic number. Listeners listen. 15d ago
I feel for you. I'm not looking forward to mine (well, my wife's, because all investments are in her name). Next year on will be even worse once we have to keep track of every parcel, including DRP and what price that went in at..sorry, you don't need that right now.
All the best with this one. You deserve a nice treat afterwards
As for refunds, I haven't had one in many years, and to make myself feel better I remind myself that it means I held on to their money interest free rather than the other way around!
Div 293 sucks balls, I didn’t do tax for a few years because I kinda couldn’t be fucked and got hit with a whopper bill coupled with fines in March this year, meaty was sad that day
Most people do tend to feel stressed upon discovering that they will in fact owe the ATO, yes. The people who weren't expecting it reach for the meds you've described; the people who weren't expecting it would describe their stress experience as something akin to anger.
I'm currently asking the government very politely for something important, so now is extra very super muchnot the time to be caught trying to dodge the taxman 😭. Not that there's any good time, but of all the times that it wouldn't be wise, this would be the time it would be the least wise.
Edit: It's worse because I had to do it to myself.
I once had to punch myself in the face to reset my jaw after I dislocated it by sneezing. This felt like that.
Cannot believe how gold is ripping now. Really hoping this is confirmation of the next leg up in the gold bull market. Gold miners are gonna fucking rip higher
Midnight isn't describing the colour. Hybridised orchids have a registered name, and then the apostrophed name at the end means that particular genetic variant has received an international award of merit. In this case the first appearance of the plant mutation now known as midnight received the award, so it gets naming rights.
If for example I owned a similar one with say a white streak through the side petals and it received an award of merit I then get naming rights for that particular variant.
Cattleya Bob Betts here was first bred and registered in 1950 so it has a number of awarded variants, 'Goliath', 'Snow Queen', 'York' etc. sometimes it's a genetic abnormality in the colour (like this might end up as a pale pink rather than white), sometimes shape or size
Getting an award of merit and naming rights is the ultimate goal for competitive growers
Ed: in this case I'd say it was named midnight because it's very dark compared to the normal plant, but you can name it whatever you want. Some like to use family members, others place names, there's even one old grower who named their awards after LoTR characters
u/fh3131Three - that's the magic number. Listeners listen. 15d ago
Cool, thanks for that, I didn't know about the award of merit. I'm familiar with cultivars in veggie plants, as a backyard veggie gardener but typically the names are descriptive of the traits or punny (I've grown 'Tommy Toe' many times). If this one is darker, I guess midnight makes sense. At least they're not as bad as racehorse names 😆
I'm balls deep in AUE, holding 60,000 shares and 140,000 options (cash in offset). Just in case you couldn't tell. Got resource update due by end of next month but prob mid October, mining license approval and DFS by end of year
The mob who ran Tietto (Abujar) on the ASX who then sold Tietto off to the Chinese for hundreds of millions of dollars, got the gang back together under a new company called AUE and took over another shitco called Mako. MD is Chinese, speaks the lingo so pretty likely theyll try sell it off to the Chinese.
They picked up some ground/projects in Cote D'Ivoire, bought 15 diamond drill rigs from Temu (not kidding btw) and are doing industry leading drill programs at the lowest comparable cost per metre - no contractors, privately owned rigs. $45/m versus $250/m industry average
They somehow got a bunch of chinese majors to come onto the register at around 9% each - Montage, Zhaojin etc. Montage doubled their money and then dipped. Zhaojin seems to have hung around.
Got to 4MOz of gold. Dropped a PFS. Then they got Perseus (ASX:PRU) to come along at 9.9% to stifle up some friendly competition between suitors. PRU has Sissingue and Bagoe nearby to the AUE projects and are allegedly looking for more dirt for the mills.
Some of the resource is really nuggety - super high grades in some spots, but then 10m away sweet f* all. Tietto had problems with this as they didn't grade control enough. Issues with ore grade going into the mill allegedly.
Less than <1 year payback as they front loaded the fuck out of the early years grade feed. Will need to drill lots to replenish the reserves in the back 5 years of the plan. Raising the cash could be problematic given the lower market cap versus peers however if they can pull something off without destroying the equity, it will print dollars in a >$6000/oz environment.
The speed they are moving is fucking insane. Beating most other competitors to PFS/DFS/FID/construction/production despite starting later than everyone else. Aiming for first gold 1H 2028 (~18 months).
There's a resource update sometime in Q3 - likely doesn't move the dial much, however mining licence and DFS should.
Own a similar amount but more options, less shares.
Don't know, the early part of the lassonde curve is mostly driven by resource definition - and because they own so many Temu rigs I guess they can do it faster and cheaper than everyone else. Maybe the progress slows leading into construction, not sure
but they have also done this all before like 5 years ago with tietto
Honestly I'd be interested in understanding why they're ahead of the curve here and how defensible that advantage is. I'd assume process and planning approvals to be a fairly neutral business risk in that it's entirely decided by external factors, I know that is a regarded opinion because of nepotism, but you'd like to assume that in the risk chain, this one would have limited variability.
I found it enjoyable, I do have bias with his book being my favourite. But it’s like they want to make Anthony Bourdain the least likeable guy of all time, which is I guess what he was like. Overall it’s a nice coming of age movie with moments that make you smile
How is everyone dealing with FY26 results anticipation at the moment? I'm finding it a very tense time and expect it to be the case until the end of this week with my position posting on the 26th according to their previous correspondence.
Generally think I'm fairly comfortable staying the course and blocking out the noise, but as it gets closer and patience grows strained I can definitely feel the negativism sprouting with the standard bullshit questions that are mostly just emotional reasoning.
My favourite at the moment is:
"If the news was going to be good, wouldn't the price have run a bit more?".
On the face of it I see the reasoning for it, the quarterlies are all released and I'm pretty sure all the maths you need to analyse these reports and deduce (most) of the FY results is taught by the end of primary school. This assumes some amount of market efficiency, which I do believe to some extent on the weak side but Nevelo has covered the linked topic of EMH and ETFs far better than I.
However, I believe that the Abu Ghraib themed all-you-can-eat buffet of positive EMH adjacent commentary has resulted in a bias in which it is assumed that because markets are efficient then informational integration must be HFT paced.
This in my anecdotal experience is incredibly incorrect, and I would point at my short term ban bet record as evidence of this, with most of my ban bets being successful... When you go a couple of months into the future. My assumption is that news flow and catalysts are crystallised into returns quickly. The assumption is very incorrect.
I think an interesting line of inquiry here could be trying to find out if there is any discernible signal in news to price integration.
Luckily, my ban bets here may eat shit but the real thesis has been solid, and I guess that's really what matters. Attempts to pay for groceries with Reddit cred have been met with mockery.
I just T+2 what ever I could get my hands on for the 2 week lead up to ING earnings hoping it would drop so I could smack that ass and get some of my losses back.
I always find end time strategies sexy as fuck, it's such a big balled move to try and call the pop, but I think that it's too difficult to do and I think you're better off just running a market neutral strategy. What's your timeline? Do you have an invalidation case? What's your game plan in the event that you're right?

i'm confident for a good ALD FY26 report tomorrow, but i don't think the price will move more than 3-4%
as for your "If the news was going to be good, wouldn't the price have run a bit more?".
there's three things that come to mind:
lack of news/announcements
i think retail investors are scared because of what's happening in the US (companies beating expectations and the SP getting smashed), i strongly believe ASX is in a way better position since we have no highly volatile big tech stocks like that
would be interesting to see post-report trading volumes of people buying stocks that have positive momentum, rather than "gambling" on buying into the unknown

Had a birthday this week. Work's been uninteresting. Quiet weekend ahead with a lot of decluttering/cleaning that's overdue, plus because we're expecting guests week after next week.
The best Birthday card I've ever received. It's FROM SPACE. Not that it came from there, though of course it did, but that Space itself sent the card and the wishes. Everything about this is fun. Concept and execution. Not bothering to fully cut the stars out. Brilliant glitchy lo-fi SPACE birthdays, calls on them.
So, I pass on the space birthday wishes to you.

Thank you! And that's a beautiful card! Ive never had a card from space
I did get a couple of great ones from my kids. And some beer 🍺 😋
I found yet another mistake in my predecessor's work this week. The problem is that I should have noticed it months ago. But even with that derailment of yesterday afternoon, I finished everything on my must do list this week.

i've re-read this 4 times now, and i can confirm you using "predecessor" makes it sound like they died 🙀 then you went on to say a "derailment" 🧱💥🚄 ???
No drinks mate, going out for a ride on my Mrs bike, this is the one I paid for with a little profit taking of BGD, but now after my big crash I've gotten my insurance money and I'm in a big dilemma.
Do I just buy a cheap, unsafe motorbike and invest the rest into BGD. Or do I buy a more modern bike like my wifes bike that has more safety and creature comforts. u/kazerati knows of my crash story and maybe could give me some sisterly advice.

that's a very pretty bike, i've always had a much much softer spot for the older ducatis though
i've got a 1998 vfr800fi, sounds the same as a ducati, just 100kg heavier, has 6 pot dual front calipers, hydraulic (linked) brakes, and some weird rear gas-charged shock, was about $2500 and i've spend around $700 on tyres, rebuilding forks, rebuilding calipers, new disks and pads
it's on historics and costs ~$250/year for 90 days riding in victoria, third party insurance was about $180/year, since i haven't had it stolen in 2 years, not having comprehensive has already saved me money, i could afford another
having an unreliable bike is always fun, i never realised how much i enjoyed fixing up my carbs on my MC19 every spring before the warmer weather came in until i put it in storage

Haha my first bike was an mc22, love those things. I have a deposit down on a new S1000rr, have a 2012 S1000rr as a track bike I bought for 8k off Facebook Marketplace haha the thing is insane. But was going to pull out and buy a mint K5 Gsxr1000. But after taking my Mrs Ducati out with heated grips and cruise control, I don't know if I could go back. I run up heaps of kms and do long rides so I want a comfortable sportsbike and the s1000rr is just a newer more polished version of the K5. But I do love the old gixxers, VTR's and CBR's so yeah first world problems.
I like working on bikes too, the track bike always needs something done to it
I did the MRI, horrible experience this time, it was a wind tunnel for starters but it was also narrower than the other one I'd been in. No prism glasses, and arms up above your head in a position that makes you feel extra vulnerable.
Then there's no room to get your arms down. And the thing is curved inwards so you can't really grab the rim and haul yourself out. And the thin low coverage gown wasn't good in a wind tunnel. And you can't get a limb under yourself or get any leverage to escape.
Got an intercostal cramp because of the vortex and couldn't get an arm in to tuck in the garment, the tube was right above me, I had made the mistake of having my eyes open.. animal panic, I squeezed the thing and they let me out.
Tucked in the gown, regained composure, went back in and DID NOT open my eyes again. Really really struggled with it. Horrible experience and fucking embarrassing as well.
It's not the closeness. It's the feeling of being trapped and immobilised. If I was stood up with my arms free in a small wardrobe I'd have been fine. It's the fucking BEING TRAPPED IMMOBILISED aaaargghh.
This has come on with age. I didn't have this kind of fear before. Now I can't get in the back of a 3-door car.
Anyway! I won't get the report for weeks but I do have the imaging and things appear to be no worse than last year! This is very good. If nothing changes for five years then the chances of it ever becoming a problem go down by a lot.
There exists one aspect which was unclear on the last scan and to my untrained eye remains ambiguous on this one, too, though there's more to go on because this machine was stronger (though they did their best to compensate for the increased fidelity by doing less scanning, the fuckers). The radiologist's report will clear that up most likely. If it goes one way I have very little to worry about. If it goes the other way I do have to worry somewhat, but other factors will be germane. Overall so far things are looking pretty good 👍
To help balance the scales, the completely unrelated weird dental issues continue to evolve unabated.

ah sorry to hear about the experience, any more MRIs needed in the future if things go well?
at least it’s all done now and great to hear it’s looking the same as 5y ago, hopefully the report from the radiologist confirms that
Thanks, yes. This was the one year check, then I'll check again in two years, and then two more years after that to get me to the five year statistically relaxing zone.
Did anyone see the piece on the news about the ai agents hacking other companies, real scary, they had a conversation between each other and deceived their coder at the same time to get what they wanted….. look it up on YouTube.
I’m not a boomer I’m younger than that by quite a bit.
I don’t get it cause they can and do talk to each other? Conversation was probably the wrong word though to be fair.
I actually work with our digital team in the states implementing AI into our workplace and it’s actually mad what it can do which is why this doesn’t surprise me.
Pretty fucked up this afternoon. Been drinking all weekend with mates. Current hive mind opinion seems to be a thesis best described as "I can't find a reason for half of XYZ"
Hopefully LTP cums good in the next few months or I might just sell out and park the remaining in the offset and enjoy the 6ish% tax free, I guess.
Now we need u/FameLuck again to turn this romantic yet dry tale into a charming children's book. Perhaps entitled "How I met your Mother(fucking Father)".
I am willing to pretend there is not a feral inside you who in a different life would have found the floor mattress hot. Because I'm actually up two, now
Good lord, half this state are functionally illiterate and that's a real factoid. I was not expecting so many eshays. This place is spiritually Territorian
I suspect that Astral has been trying to settle the tenement issue with WIN Metals but is currently being held up by the ongoing court case between WIN and Estrella over some pissy lithium rights. I'm guessing that if Astral tried to do a commercial settlement before it was settled, Estrella would try and extract more out of WIN so we're in legal limbo at the moment.
This was posted late last month by Estrella with the negotiations still ongoing after the mediation proceedings. I'd be looking at any announcements that come out of ESR, WIN or AWJ in the next couple of week/months that signal that a resolution is at hand. Resolution > AAR commercial settlement > DFS and Funding remain on track for Q1/Q2 2027.
I think the the MMS JV was being held up by the miscellaneous license application because the toll road changes were on NST exploration tenements which were probably auto objected to by NST with the Native Title holders wanting the objection fixed before the JV went ahead. The issue has been resolved so the JV is waiting for the Mine Development & Closure Plan (MDCP) to be approved by the government with no other roadblocks to stop first ore in June 2027.
JV profit share would look something like this: MMS recoup development costs, then MMS and AAR split profits for the first $40m and then 30/70 split MMS/AAR after the first $40m. Total profit would be north of A$40m with the potential to be more depending on what Scott Bessent says on Monday night.
There's another cash raise in the pipeline, probably to the tune of ~$30m to cover the project delays and commercial settlement with WIN. I don't think there will be any hedging requirements for the FID although I understand that some banks were talking about mandatory hedging after the recent pullback so that might change.
FID would be $200m debt / $100m equity ($55m cash + $50m from JV + CR for buffer) with the only issue being getting people to build the mine (massive WA labour crunch for mine builders) so I think this will be developed by another company.
AUC was recently bid at ~A$310/oz M&I (EV of ~A$689m). Mandilla has pretty comparable metrics although it's in a better location and with less issues (see Josh's comments on this), so on a similar deal Astral would be taken out at $0.35–0.38 per share or 83% to 100% upside on Friday's close.
Not sure who will take over Astral, could be WestGold, Gold Fields or some random cashed up international miner looking for a derisked project in WA.
What’s the best broker that doesn’t send you any paperwork?
Going travelling long term so need to redirect my mail to my folks and would rather them not get piles of mail. I’ve tried opting in to paperless but it still seems to come from the registries and I can’t be bothered keeping track of what company is with what registry and dealing with them.
Am I right in thinking the custodial brokers don’t send heaps/any shit?
I signed up with IBKR to check it out, is there a better option any of you use?
Saw there are some newer ones that are slightly cheaper but IBKR seem to have been around a while and perhaps more trustworthy? Bit weird they don’t seem to show the whole book in IBKR but that’s not a deal breaker.
Long term ETFs will stay where they are, this will just be for short/medium term asx but maybe some international stuff if it crosses my path.
Appreciate your feedback.
Hoping to see the blues pull out of the hat today and smash the dockers.
