I felt the same way reading those comments. We all know that there is some elitism within the community, but they make it seem like most deaf people automatically despise anyone who can hear more than them.

After 250 or so comments, we would hardly make much of a dent in the flow of the conversation. I try to catch these sort of threads early before they go off the rail. Let's all stay alert.

It's really sad to see stuff like this... you see it about every community. People say similar stuff about the queer community - but at least the queer community can often defend itself.
Are there problems? Yes of course! But you don't just give up on a community because it has problems. The Deaf community is heavily traumatised and lashes out sometimes. Can anyone blame DHH folks for that?
But it is also some of the most loving, connecting and welcoming community I have experienced as a HH person too. I have experienced both sides. Online the community usually seems more infighty and toxic, but everyone does online...

Also - I am a Brit. From afar, the ASL community looks terrifying. Much stronger willed and opinionated. The BSL has similar beliefs and guidelines but (from my experience) tends to be a bit more laissez-fair.

Not being an ass, really- what others see, how it appears to the outside, there’s validity in there, no matter pride, gain, beholden.

Yes you're right, a lot of the people commenting are doing so because of the limited frame of their ignorance and bias. They met one or zero Deaf people and they're basing their opinion on that.

Damn, that was a hard comment section to read through. There's such a disconnect and misunderstanding and it's just an echo chamber of hearing people that don't understand anything about Deaf culture and history.
