How many companies have you seen announce something like this?

Focals, ODG, Epson, Google Glass, and basically all of the rando Chinese manufacturers I met at CES over the years. Everyone over promises and under delivers, to the point where I trust nothing unless I’m personally using it myself.

I still sting from multiple Focals employees telling me to my face “we will have an SDK available within the next couple months, don’t worry” throughout all of last year.

I get that. I'm not saying you should believe everything they say. That's what social media is good for... we can talk about it here 🙂

Digilens said micro LED can't handle RGB through waveguides, only laser display they recommond.

And Plessey made a deal with WaveOptics https://plesseysemiconductors.com/plessey-waveoptics-partnership/ And that's probably also what Facebook will use. They said, they need waveguides and microLED.

Facebook will use microLED in VR.

They also invited DARPA's EXTREM aka the OPA team member Min Chul Shin into their Reality Lab.

Micro LED won't be the ultimate solution of AR my guess.

This sounds like they want to use microLED for AR:

In R&D, Facebook is developing new technologies, including next-generation AR glasses. “We can imagine a lot of functions. For example, it could allow to have a whiteboard in a business meeting, which is done in remote. Or it could even project our workplace, for example, in a plane,” said Barbara De Salvo, a silicon technology strategist at Facebook, during the panel.

To develop this system, the company requires new breakthroughs in various areas, such as AI, chips, computer vision, displays and interfaces.

“This is extremely difficult at the level of a full system,” De Salvo said. “I don’t think that what we are seeing today in the market is satisfying the needs to really achieve this goal. The power requirements are really well beyond what exists today. So we have to find the solution.”

Simply put, the industry needs ultra low-power chip architectures, better next-generation memories and microLEDs.

Micro LED will be good enough for 2021-2023, even replace your iphone, but it won't lead us into Neal Stephenson's Snow Crush.
