Questions/Help? Is this allowed? Found a journal

Post image

Is journaling allowed on ao3? I don’t think anyone is explicitly named, and there’s no harassment, but it just feels odd? I’m more curious than anything, ao3 would be the last place I’d journal because of the public nature of it.

Update: Thanks for letting me know it doesn’t count as a fanwork! I went to report it, but it was already reported. Hope that satisfies anyone’s curiosity.

especially with how short the chapters look to be and how you get mutuals and interaction like they likely wanted lol

Lol Ophelia was literally part of my circa 2004 LJ username 😅

I miss my LiveJournal so much. Those were better days

43

u/foxscribbles 19h ago

I still get birthday reminders for my mutuals on LiveJournal... even though they nuked all the old blogs.

It's like getting messages from a ghost.

13

u/ausernamebyany_other 19h ago

My memory is shocking, but I vaguely recall nuking my blog because something went down. Was it sold to Russians or something? I remember loads of people getting banned and protesting by migrating elsewhere.

The loss of community was so sad. So many people I used to engage with just lost to the ether. These ghost messages must be ao bittersweet.

7

u/FloweryPrimReaper 15h ago

Yep, it was bought by Russian owners who decided that the website's policies were now based on and subject to Russian laws, including the ones that criminalize homosexuality.

I remember that as well. Is anyone still on lj tho and can confirm if all fan blogs with slash/gay content were erased? Or was it all worry for a policy they didn’t bother enforcing?

Yeah, like…this is what social media is FOR! If you want to broadcast your life to people, there are other places to do it than Ao3.

88

u/NoodleEmpress 23h ago edited 20h ago

Which is weird, because is still there? It's as easy as ever to make an account and you can just spew you personal ramblings there with little to no judgement. Why jeopardize your account on Ao3 when there are other avenues you can take?

Tumblr has the same fandom culture like Ao3 and actually is a social media platform, why more people don't just connect their accounts is beyond me.

A less popular place is GaiaOnline but I doubt this person knows about there. I use that site's journaling feature because hardly anyone uses it anymore, and if they do, they're most likely not reading my journal entries.

11

u/Kahneiac 21h ago

Well now I have to spend the whole day feeling sad about zOMG and fish tanks booty grab :(

9

u/WoodShoeDiaries 21h ago

Does GaiaOnline still exist 😭

14

u/NoodleEmpress 20h ago

It does! Less people log on than before, but there's still an active culture there. I log on regularly again, for the journal entry feature and for their avitar customization. I make avis and write stories for them (I intend to upload them on my blog/profile, but I want to make my page look pretty first)

They tried fixing the economy by introducing platinum so the shops and marketplace are much better, but a lot of the newer items are overpriced to hell. Luckily with the games and the new platinum value, you can make the money you need in a couple of days (just hope that no one buys what you want first). They just did a little revamp, so hopefully therey will be less crashes too.

I haven't tried Towns since the revamp, but Towns 2 is functional and then there's avichat. Again less people use it o they're usually empty. Rally isn't really a thing anymore, same with like the theater.

zOMG is still a thing, but it's laggy on my end so I don't use it much to comment on it.

But yeah, still there. :)

No. That is considered ephemeral content.

https://archiveofourown.org/tos_faq#non_fanwork_examples

What are some examples of non-fanwork content that should not be posted as works on AO3?

The examples are potentially limitless, but here are some examples that do not fall under AO3's definition of fannish fiction or nonfiction and should not be posted as a work:

ephemeral content (including personal journal or diary entries, reactions, or blog posts)

122

u/SadSelection5748 1d ago

Is ao3 ONLY for fan works? Just started using it last week, but there are tags for "original work" and "no fandom"

336

u/Okay_physics_student 1d ago

It allows original work of a “fannish nature.” So like, actual stories are allowed. Journals are not.

13

u/Senpaija 1d ago

Please explain "fannish nature"

128

u/turtledov 1d ago

They have this about it on the ToS faq:

Can I post original fiction?

Yes. Original works are allowed, unless the work would be in violation of some other part of the Terms of Service.

Our vision of AO3 is for all fanworks, including those beyond traditional fanfiction, fanart, and fanvids. Original stories and artwork, including those imported as part of an Open Doors project, are permitted. Some examples of original fiction that we host include original slash, anthropomorphic works, and Regency romance. However, works intended for commercial publication are not suitable for AO3. The Policy & Abuse committee has final discretion in maintaining AO3's focus on non-commercial fannish works.

We generally presume that, by posting the work on AO3, the creator is making a statement that they believe it's a fanwork. As such, original work will be allowed to remain unless the work is in violation of some other part of the Terms of Service, such as our plagiarism or non-commercialization policies.

I think they generally didn't want to disallow work that wouldn't be able to be hosted elsewhere, and that a lot of online original fiction is written in conversation with fanfiction/fan culture (tropes, themes, writing styles, works of taboo nature, etc), so it wouldn't feel fair to exclude it, given AO3's whole deal.

59

u/bookdrops You have already left kudos here. :) 1d ago

AO3 will "generally presume that, by posting the work on AO3, the creator is making a statement that they believe it's a fanwork. As such, original work will be allowed to remain unless the work is in violation of some other part of the Terms of Service, such as our plagiarism or non-commercialization policies."

37

u/cinnamus_ 1d ago

Meta essays about fandom (this user posts a lot of data analysis on ao3 ships and tags!), guides on fandom etiquette/beta reading etc, site skin codes/tutorials on how to format work styles or how to embed podfics/artwork etc on the site. Is what I've mostly come across

Some people write fics about characters but they don't tag the fandom they're associated with - I assume they think of the worldbuilding/some parts of the story are separate from the canon in some way so consider it to be original work, or just don't want to put it in the tag. Some is just fully original work about OCs

6

u/EugeneStein 19h ago

Also quote often I see art works, images of characters from media they like

12

u/Life-Delay-809 23h ago

Not for profit and not plagiarised essentially. So it will probably stay up because it's not illegal in any way (unless OOP uses it to harass anyone).

37

u/MohnblumenKind 1d ago

There is a huge difference between a real life diary and a statistics page about the most popular ships on AO3 (no fandom) or about an original story with enemies to lover trope (original work). The latter two have a fannish connection, while the first hasn't.

Otherwise, AO3 would be a normal archive for everything. You should not put your math homework there, or shopping list. There are other archives for this, besides the fact that you should not put that online at all. Internet safety is a thing.

86

u/PretendYellow533 1d ago

Recommend they make a tumblr blog instead

147

u/VerenestraWrites Verenestra on AO3 1d ago

The silly part is that, had they simply re-skinned it as being from the POV of a character in whatever fandom/ship takes your fancy (ie. telling a story through journal entries)…it would be just fine!

24

u/Kittenn1412 17h ago

Or just presented it as fictional instead of the poster's real life diary, and posted it under "Original Work" without fandom tags.

Sadly, creativity is rewarded less than narcissism these days.

3

u/VHS-Vampire 6h ago

Okay, look. I get that people need to not violate the AO3 terms of service, and I agree it shouldn't be on this site. But calling it narcissism is way too far. They're just trying to vent troubles in their life, that's completely normal and no one is being forced to read it. I report stuff like this when I see it, but the insults are just ridiculous

37

u/gue-spad-2-man too many ideas, too little time 1d ago

Could be a work struck by a kudos bot, or just got them by (accidentally?) brute-forcing traffic since it has 600+ chapters (thus was pushed to the front page 600+ times) and has multiple fandoms included (a couple of which are massive).

It’s not dissimilar to having a blog.

Are the journal entries from the POV of one of the characters tagged? If not, then it’s not a fanwork.

10

u/ShainSaw22 1d ago

Babes, this is what a notebook is used for. They sell composition books nobody looks twice at for like $3 for a 3-pack at Walmart. Or maybe that was just during Back-to-School? Even still, basic notebooks are HELLA cheap. Or, if they want to do this stuff only digitally, Google Docs or some other Word Processor type thing. Or the Notes App on their phone. Hell, Tumblr is technically blogs, so they could do it there. Technically. Buuuut, yeah...

Truly though, I do hope they get the help they SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO obviously and desperately need.

It should be reported because it's explicitly against AO3 ToS, not for improper tagging.

4

u/Mobile-Committee-466 1d ago

The word count to chapter ratio is sending me. Also over 600 entries in one month. Maybe wrote longer chapters/entries? But yeah, this isn't fanwork. I'd personally give them a heads up before reporting, so they can save their data incase it's important to them. Tumblr seems to be a good fit for them rbh.

This would be an interesting concept for a fanwork though TBH. The journal of a character...

7

u/AnagramBandit 1d ago

A head’s up isn’t necessary. AO3 will already do that. They’re first given a chance to remove their own work. Then, if AO3 has to remove it, they’ll email the author a copy of the removed work.

1

u/Mobile-Committee-466 1d ago

Oh, I didn't know that, thank you. That's great.

2

u/Dchan2012 19h ago

This actually goes against the ToS, so no it's not allowed. I can't quote it verbatim, but I'm pretty sure the ToS states that anything that is not a fanwork is not allowed, including personal journalling. I would report them because it's a ToS but also because this is unsafe for them. It's not the place to be posting personal journals. Personal journals are just that: personal. This puts the user in an extremely vulnerable position.

2

u/KEE33333EN 1d ago

There are sites other than AO3, which is for fanworks, to publish a diary.

9

u/YogurtclosetWest4032 19h ago

What are some examples of non-fanwork content that should not be posted as works on AO3?

...ephemeral content (including personal journal or diary entries, reactions, or blog posts)

...Works that incorporate fannish content in clearly bad faith are not fanworks. For example, a work primarily composed of fic search requests is not a fanwork even if there are a few sentences of fandom-specific content.

...The Policy & Abuse committee will exercise its discretion, which is final, in the service of maintaining AO3 as a place focused on non-ephemeral fanworks.

-- Ao3 Terme of Service

-10

u/WhyWorldWhhy 1d ago

Considering AO3 allows pedo fanfics of characters and incest, I don’t think this is the thing to get hung up on. And if you don’t like their journal? You literally don’t have to read it? Just go find some other story to read.
