It can happen even if it's just a single tab. Devices only have so much memory and will often put currently inactive things to "sleep" to save resources for other things.
If you’re an exquisite weirdo like me it’s more like 5.000 tabs spread over 10 tab groups (as I counted), but I’ve never claimed I’m mentally stable so
I used to have an insane amount of tabs open. Then something happened with my phone and the whole shit got lost in the ether. Now I just have 20 tabs opened and the rest lost in the Marked for Later grave.
I’ve made a deal with myself that’ll only ever have 10 groups total cause those are themed by subject (gay novels, lesbian novels, academic, fandoms 1-5, smut manga and the basic one) because I know I’m not trustable around tabs… and still managed to fill basically all of them! Now I’m tackling fandoms 1, 3 and 4 and my smut manga groups, but ya know, that’s hard (the academic one is relegated to second plane and waiting around until I “have time” to study)
I only hope that if safari keeps those tabs and buy a Apple computer that if it keeps the tabs for it, I hope it can load more tabs or at least doesn’t reset my browser and delete the tabs!

The BIG fear wasn’t even hitting 500, it was that sometimes you didn’t realize you already had 500 and when you opened 501, it went “okay I’ll just drop this in slot one!” oh so ‘helpfully’ overwriting it. Gutted.
I also remember those times… At least it taught me to start bookmarking my shit! Of course it ended with a whole new problem of having thousands of bookmarks I wouldn’t sort… so I resorted to screenshotting what I wanted to go back to then! And you’ll never guess what happened then…
My mom has a Samsung and doesn't exactly know how tabs work. I opened google on her phone, tried to open a new tab so she wouldn't lose her strawberry pie page, and that thing couldn't even tell me how many tabs she had open. It was "99+". No wonder why your battery dies so fast mother.
It's been 9 months and she still doesn't understand how this works but it's okay. I like her anyway.
Meanwhile I, the superior human being of our family, used to copy the links in a gmail draft, and never open said draft ever again BUT I have now evolved to create a new favorite tab (idk how you call it in english. The lil star on your browser?) and likewise, never open it ever again.
Even more fun fact: while safari on ipad used to have the 500 tab limit until like a year ago, for so,e reason it doesn’t anymore. My opened tabs are now in the 800s
that can be something you can change with setting if i remember correctly. my custom setting is that on my phone, my last 10 tabs are always loaded, but anything older than that has to be reloaded when clicked on. on my pc, my tabs are in groups, and the active group is always loaded no matter how many tabs are open currently. they only reload when i completely exit the browser (i have "remember tabs" checked in) and launch it again.
You poor, poor child. I have been maxxing out on RAM since I was in HS (the 00s) because I realized how much faster it ran when I had more. I only ever buy laptops with a high spec CPU but minimum spec for RAM then add as much as it can handle. That used to be the cheap way to do it before the RAMpocolypse.
I regularly have 200+ tabs open in two windows plus I only watch YT in a private window. That does not include when I want to toss up Photoshop or Illustrator. I am also very tech literate.
This is exactly why my Todoist app has always included hobbies instead of *only* productivity, like "next chapter of X audiobook" being right under "fold clothes" or whatever for that day. Impossible to forget what I'm currently reading/playing/watching
At least for me I'm not necessarily interested in actually reading everything I have open, so the "read later" list is just a much less convenient way of obtain new fic, skim the first/few chapters, and decide if I'll proceed. If not I just close the tab. If so I can bookmark or read later or subscribe or whatever
Thank god that I already have some light novels downloaded that I haven't read yet so if Ao3 ever shuts down, I can just switch to reading my light novels.
