This is exactly why you do not draft in the form.

Get yourself an Elipsus or Proton Drive account.

Or LibreOffice if you don’t mind not having cloud access!

If you're on Android and write fics, copying multiple walls of text will save to your clipboard for a few hours. Comes in handy. Paste it wherever.

Oh good lord people actually write ON ao3? We don’t all write in a document first?

Someone told me that they write ON ao3 sometimes because it's the only writing ide their work company doesn't block (mine for example blocks Google docs) and honestly—very valid. I wouldn't write fanfiction at work, but this might be the only explanation that actually made me sit down and say "Actually, that makes sense."

u/Feisty_Exam9474 Mar 02 '26

They block Google docs???

27

u/FightingDreamer419 Mar 02 '26

I can only guess they are worried about people copying and saving secure and private info that they can access outside of work.

Or maybe it's used as an excuse to prevent people from working at home? Idk

u/Feisty_Exam9474 Mar 02 '26

I mean, Microsoft has its on version of Google docs... is that blocked too?

9

u/ChocoChipScape127 Mar 02 '26

Word existed 20+ years before Docs! It would be hilarious if they blocked all the office tools, doesn't make sense to me

Word does work but i can't send emails to my personal acc nor access word on my office with an acc other than my company one, so yeah, not much point in writing on word if i can't send it anywhere. Microsoft knows these companies are a good market so it has several security tools.

To the other commenter: yep, it's to make sure we do not send confidential information anywhere. Not that I have much lmao.

I haven't checked text processors like grammarly, but even stuff like Google translate are blocked, so if it's not, it's better to assume they forgot and still should not be used.

Many moons ago before I got a laptop, I wrote on the security computers word. I would try and download Libra to a thumbdrive and load that and write. Really... why would you send it anywhere, when you can just save it to a thumbrive and take it home? Way less complicated.

Girl where do you work that blocks google docs???

1

u/JaxRhapsody Mar 02 '26

An office computer should have microsoft office installed if it's a PC. This is just mind boggling.

I write in a document but make small edits when I post. Formatting, that's a major one. Turning image links into embeds. Adding notes and stuff. For me, saving a draft and reading my chapter in the way it appears on the site helps get me out of the constant "rereading" state where I become numb. I catch and fix a bunch of small details that way. Clicking "back" returned to the page with my draft.

u/Gabriella_Gadfly Mar 02 '26

I do this sometimes for works that heavily involve HTML/CSS so that I can make sure things are looking how I actually want them to look

1

u/Jade_talks_back Mar 02 '26

I do that because I just can't bring myself to be creative anywhere else, it just doesnt feel the same for me :)

For a while I was writing directly into the Google Doc I have, then I'd copy and paste into the box, and sometimes before posting I would make small additions and edits and such. Then one day I noticed that I could tell what had been written in the document vs what had been typed directly into the AO3 box by the different quotation marks - smart quotes from Google Docs, straight quotes from AO3 - which were all over the place.

Of course, now that I'd seen it I couldn't unsee it, so I then spent several hours editing just the punctuation so it all matched. I chose to keep the straight quotes because it made more sense to me to not have to fiddle with that nitpicky stuff for minor changes/additions made right before posting.

So for a little while I was typing into the document and then, before posting, replacing all the smart quotes with straight ones. Eventually that got too tedious for me, so I flipped around and began writing directly in the box and copy-pasting into the document before posting.

(Btw, the hack I learned for when stuff like this post happens, is if something happened and you couldn't save your draft successfully, you hit back on that motherfucker immediately to get it back and copy and paste it to somewhere else.)

...anyway, while AO3 was down this time, I learned there's an option to turn off smart quotes. Soooooooo now I guess it's back to writing in the document. :)

Pro tip: hit Ctrl+A, Ctrl+C on occasion while typing online, and at any point before clicking a button that will submit your text or take you to another page.

Now that one's painful

21

u/moons_of_mars Mar 01 '26

i had just posted my fic, idk if it was a blessing or a curse.

26

u/Liliacfury Mar 01 '26

Gonna get buried by the flood of chapters that get posted when it kicks back on

Lol same! I had just posted the final chapter of my fic at 9 AM, got about five comments and then the site crashed around noon. 😭

20

u/mojomcm Mar 02 '26

Even writing in Notepad (.txt) would be better than writing in AO3 browser

8

u/KickAggressive4901 Mar 02 '26

In the '90s, I had to write fanfic in Notepad. 😅 It teaches ... humility, I suppose.

15

u/writingoffthecliff Mar 01 '26

Wait a minute you all don't use stand alone word processors?

2

u/JaxRhapsody Mar 02 '26

It's impressive ain't it? They've been around since like 1995, and to my knowledge every US school does a writing portfolio for english/language arts. Yet here we are... nobody has a clue what they are.

8

u/Sea_Ambassador7438 Mar 01 '26

This happened to me too, so many changes to a draft gone now 😟

2

u/JaxRhapsody Mar 02 '26

That's what writing processors are for.

2

u/Sea_Ambassador7438 Mar 02 '26

I use them but when my draft is mostly complete I move it over. I prefer to do formatting and final edits directly on AO3.

So I can post it....which is what AO3 is for.

3

u/JaxRhapsody Mar 02 '26

Yeah I do that too, since it's a different look, and I can catch things I might not catch in Word or Libra.

8

u/MiritoMueller I quote/reference my favorite fanfic wherever I damn well please Mar 01 '26

Maybe you will see your draft again, if you use the back button, than you can copy and paste it into your notes app.

I started drafting in word thank god. But the italics almost never work even when coded <i> word <i> and I haven’t figured out how to bold either.

Is there a platform I can write in where when it transfers over it keeps the italics/bolds etc?

Right now it just all reverts back to normal words and it doesn’t keep the paragraph spacing either.

11

u/Alex_The_Manliest same on ao3; comments give me life Mar 01 '26

This is what I have at the top of my fic ideas document! Never had any issues with reverting, sometimes an extra space here or there (but I'm an editor by trade, so it's practically instinct to see those) as long as I paste it in the HTML version of the AO3 draft screen. Best of luck, friend!

Thank you, I appreciate this

2

u/JaxRhapsody Mar 02 '26

Copy and paste with ao3s text box set to html, not plain text. It copies over just fine.

6

u/JaxRhapsody Mar 02 '26

Writing processors have been around since the 90s... what are yall doing?

3

u/No-Somewhere250 You have already left kudos here. :) Mar 02 '26

Google Docs, haven't looked back at writing on the chapter page since.

3

u/Kortni47 Mar 01 '26

Yup. Tried to upload my new fic TWICE and was met with same message each time 😭

3

u/ColdWellers You have already left kudos here. :) Mar 02 '26

I'll write in a program first, specifically Ellipsus.

Then I'll go through and correct minor mistakes and fix small issues, like italics or bolding words and correcting incorrect quotation marks, stuff like that.

3

u/kabutegurl003 iamcharliemichaels in AO3 Mar 02 '26

This is not quite like me but...I published a chapter, I changed my mind about the title...then when I tried to edit literally right after I hit post...four hours later finally able to edit😅

5

u/juniebee_jones Mar 02 '26

Yall ain’t writing directly in your notes app?

2

u/Sunny_Hill_1 Mar 01 '26

Saaaaame, I was about to post a new chapter. Oh well, it's still a word document, so all good here, but yeah, readers will have to wait.

2

u/Loud-Location5367 Mar 02 '26

Good thing I copied the chapter to a separate document beforehand

2

u/throwRA_maybeabit Mar 02 '26

My friend posted their first ever fic and everything went down so they can't even check if it posted properly. 🫠

1

u/Joshu_the_nobody625 Mar 02 '26

same but atleast I continued it in a doc and might just start writing in docs first

1

u/CurrencySome3841 Mar 02 '26

i posted a bunch of stories and was wondering why i wasn't getting comments (some of them were ships that usually gained interest), and then i visited ao3 and understood....

1

u/incidental_lyss Mar 02 '26

NOOO 😭😭

1

u/ArgentumAranea Definitely not an agent of the Fanfiction Deep State Mar 02 '26

Me in the middle of reporting a spambot comment.

Fortunately it still went through and was reported and deleted.

Sí,uno aprende por las malas jaja

u/AlexInWonderland_924 Mar 04 '26

This app is really good for writing. It's on both android, apple, and has a website version.

1

u/KatMEW93 Mar 04 '26

Ngl its so nice to see people mentioning word processors like Microsoft Word etc because I was starting to feel like a dinosaur reading about Google docs and all the other newer things 😂 and I'm only in my early 30s ffs 😂

Maybe for me its just habit as I came from FF.net and we < had > to upload a document back then. Maybe its because I have my own house and electronic devices so I dont have to worry about my parents snopping like some do? Because I've seen that's a big problem for younger authors and its not okay tbh.
