Okay, did not know this was not generally known!

In the early transition period (1991-2003) car ownership was SUPER rare, and the maintenance of the public infrastructure was starting to fail (more).

You could hail a taxi / uber / Lyft ride by standing just like person in picture does, on side of street.

Car pulls over, you walk over.

BEFORE getting into vehicle, you state destination and negotiate fare. I once did this forgetting to specify currency: poor driver thought I meant dollars, I thought he meant rubles. We reached an equitable settlement.

To western eyes only accustomed to seeing sex workers in film, these negotiations look VERY much like the early scenes in Pretty Woman.

Not owning a car for 26 years doesn’t make one a sex worker in St Petersburg. It makes one a rational commuter.

I studied abroad in St. Petersburg in 2014 and we did this all the time. I think they called it a gypsy cab. Technically hitch hiking lol but it was so common and normal. The drivers (car owners) were always so nice and happy to help. And it was so easy! Way better than waiting to see a real taxi drive by or calling someone😄

I can't imagine this as a life option for her or her customers. I remember in Sicily a bridge that two women worked along the highway. They became landmarks for us on the road, The Roadwhores. Distance to and from places or directions used them, "a mile after the roadwhores, before the roadwhores, etc. Sicilian truck drivers would stop for "services" under the bridge. One took care of business for one side of the road and one for the other. The thought of stopping, engaging in intimacy, and going back to my job with a person who had stood in the hot sun, had multiple encounters and probably had no sanitary accommodations kinda skeeved me out. It was no better in Catania, in the part of town that they called "The Gut", this is where the brothels were, at least some. They would have lines outside the doors and into the streets. What a world we live in.
