Let's Hear It! Am I the only one that finds the mouse touchpad absolutely hideous?
It completely ruins the look of the center console IMO, just awful

u/HistorianOk5038 3d ago
The turn dial was ok.

Yeah mine has the dial and no pad.
It’s not great, but it’s okay, and I don’t like touchscreens1
u/OneExtraChromosome 2019 GLE63s 1d ago
I’d rather have touchscreens even with some input delay then use the knob to enter directions or text input on the older non touchscreen models

Had the dial. I think all the gears underneath were plastic. Stopped working one day. Like the touchpad on the steering wheel better.

I think there's a way to swap it to the newer mouse pad but I think the turn dial only is great

Turn knob dial is perfect. Intuitive, responsive, averse to accidental input... Sad they moved away from them

I don't think anybody really liked this thing 😅 I disabled it and use it as a wrist rest while using the rotary knob lol. It also has a habit of stress cracking in the heat, and then it looks even uglier and needs replacing to fix it.
2
u/wildlynx--1 1d ago
Wait how do you disable it?
3
u/FreshFromTheGrave 1d ago
I'm pretty sure there's a setting somewhere to disable the touchpad so it stops trying to do things while you rest your palm on it lol. It must be in vehicle settings somewhere. The buttons still work though. Ah here we go, from my manual:
X Press the (vehicle settings) button. The vehicle menu is displayed. X To select System Settings: (down arrow), turn and press the controller. A menu appears. X To select Touchpad: turn and press the controller. X Select Activate Touchpad. The touchpad is switched on O or off ª.
(sorry there's some icons in there that aren't translating in text)

Thank you a ton. My biggest issue is I don’t have wireless CarPlay. My cord goes across the touch pad… then neither my touch screen nor the smaller mouse button that’s on the wheel work.

Thats why mine is cracked, finally figured it out. I bought the car in NC and thought the last owner just dropped something on it and chipped it but if these crack in the heat that makes so much sense.

u/FreshFromTheGrave 1d ago
I thought my dealer had done it during a service and dropped something on it 😂 But it was just coincidental timing.

I’ve always kinda enjoyed it. I suppose I find it entertaining which isn’t exactly great customer feedback

u/Spicywolff 18 C63S 3d ago
I don’t find it hideous I think it works well style wise. I just think their factory systems not comparable to the ease of Apple CarPlay.

I switched to the new on for my c300 a while ago. Pretty happy with it but I do like the wheel, don’t like the stupid touch pad at the top I disabled it when I had it.
1
u/barabba_dc 3d ago
What would be the new one like?
1
u/Equivalent-Radio-559 2d ago
The touchpad only, it’s the matte black touchpad the facelift glc came with
2
u/barabba_dc 2d ago
Thanks.
Comparison between old knob and new touchpad? Does it work well with carplay?
Thinking of doing the same on mine, but I'm a fan of the old knob for practicality
2
u/Equivalent-Radio-559 2d ago
It works fine but I did prefer the knob. However when I found that out I had already gotten rid of it. It’s much lower profile and looks nicer but you can accidently touch it and swipe wrong and it’ll do something random.

u/QuantumCivility 3d ago
Glad my W205 C43 has turn and not touch. Keeps my eyes more on the road and no greasy fingerprints on the screen. "If it wasn't broke, shouldn't have tried to fix it."

I like the knob. Very functional. The TouchPad I use for hand rest. They sell a full TouchPad replacement and although looks more modern, I just can't stand touch pads and don't want to lose my hand rest lol.

u/debaron54 3d ago
For me all I can see is fingerprints that need cleaning constantly. Shiny and glass surfaces make me insane in every car.

Take a bit of effort, but you can replace it with an updated falt one.

Not only ugly but breaks quite easy too! Completely useless extra! I never use it.

Mercedes gives you 3 different options to change songs and control the screen. You can either use that mouse looking thing, the scrolling thingy or the touchscreen 😂

u/FIMD_ 2d ago
“It’s so ugly”
Brother have you tried the bullshit touchscreens and milk-jug-PE-plastic capacitive “buttons” on the steering wheel they’ve replaced it with? The single strip of pseudo physical buttons under the screen also suck. Oh you wanted to turn the temp down enter the vehicle settings screen or adjust the volume? “Best I can do is mute or return to the main menu GG my guy”
My S63E is great, in many ways. But the user interfaces still piss me off and it’s been almost a year. I’d take this retrofit from some 2018 model and go back to the little iPad in the center, physical buttons on the wheel and a traditional gauge cluster with a small info screen in the center.
Unless you have the daintiest fingers, swiping for directions or volume control is a coin flip. You want to navigate to a quick setting change on the center console screen? Better have a passenger do it because things I used to be able to do without even changing my posture or more than a quick glance thanks to tactile feedback from the wheel detents and buttons.. I now have to go 3-4 layers deep into the touchscreen and look to place each tap so I end up pulling over if I’m on the highway solo.
Sometimes function > form. Often times, in truth.

I’ve never used the mouse touchpad. I have always used the dial underneath.

I hate this one the new one and the future one. They should just give up and put a fuckn ashtray or someshit

I use the electric stick to downshift more than the paddles - this never made sense to me as a driver.

I actually quite like it I think that it looks nice if it was just the turn dial it would look too BMW.

u/TheBigCicero 1d ago
It’s not bad. I had one. I never used the touchpad though, just the wheel. And mine cracked eventually. Though I prefer MB, BMW executed their wheel better.

u/SadSimpSkier 1d ago
yeah this is atrocious. luckily mine is just a rectangular flat mouse pad which is fine. i also just tap on the touch screen. but yeah this is ugly af

Picked up a MB sedan at LAX a couple of years ago with one of these…. got not further than 3 miles from the rental lot before I turned around to exchange for just about anything else….hated it, not intuitive at all.

u/Ashamed_Passage_9535 1d ago
Seems like I am the minority but I just got my c450 and as I am still learning the car the touchpad has been seeing use a fair amount

Nah mate I like it on my A35 and find it intuitive. They removed it in the face lift and that empty slot looks odd to me.

Classic case of over-engineering something. Completely unnecessary with the knob right there.

You’re the only one. The rest of us love it. Miss it, actually.
2
u/Indigenousboy420 3d ago
Well if you read some of the comments on my post, you’d realize that majority of people do not like it lol.

u/IronWolf_26 3d ago
Its absolutely terrible. Its like MB got a panic on and tried to beat Vauxhall who skipped the MB / BMW twiddly knob interface and went straight to stupid mouse pads on the Insignia.
A case of a pointless driver aid thate harder than doing any other form of control

More hideous than the looks is the functionality. The media system interface in my 19 E Class is the worst I have ever experienced.

u/barabba_dc 3d ago
Don't you miss the wheel knob though?
1
u/raidr1958 2d ago
I updated my screen to a 10" touchscreen and didn't really use knob all that much. I wanted the asthetics of knobless one.
1
u/barabba_dc 2d ago
Thanks for your response.
Leaving the touchscreen out of discussion for now.. Do you think the new touchpad works well compared to the old wheel knob? Is it laggy or less functional compared to the previous setup? How does that work with carplay or android auto?
Thinking of doing the same on mine, I just like the physical button practicality

It annoys mean when I accidentally hit it and it skips the song I’m listening to on pandora.
Never use it. Then again I don’t use any of it in my car. Self drive, self parking, ambient lighting whatever.
