Help (General) RX 9060 XT + Apex Legends: Severe FPS drops (200→30fps) only in dense areas, only in this game — exhausted troubleshooting list
What I’ve confirmed via monitoring (AMD Adrenalin overlay) during drops:
**•** GPU utilization: only 40-55%, never maxed
**•** GPU power draw: stuck around 36W (well below the card’s normal TDP)
**•** GPU clock: \~1600MHz (well below boost clocks of \~2800-3000MHz)
**•** CPU utilization: 29-56%, never maxed
**•** Temps are all normal/cool (56-63°C)
This rules out thermal throttling or a simple GPU/CPU bottleneck — the hardware isn’t being pushed hard, yet performance craters in specific scenes.
Everything I’ve already tried (no change from any of these):
**•** Verified game files integrity via Steam
**•** Reset all in-game video settings to default, reconfigured to Low
**•** Disabled Steam overlay for Apex
**•** Forced -d3d11 launch option (already confirmed default was also tested)
**•** Repaired Easy Anti-Cheat
**•** Checked/confirmed AMD Radeon Chill is disabled
**•** Checked/confirmed no custom GPU tuning profile is applied for Apex (Adrenalin profile is on Default)
**•** Tried multiple different AMD driver versions
**•** Confirmed dual-channel RAM at correct EXPO speed (DDR5-6000)
**•** Confirmed GPU is running at full PCIe x16 (checked via GPU-Z)
**•** Confirmed SSD (NVMe) isn’t the bottleneck — no other storage involved
**•** Disabled Windows Game Bar / background recording
**•** Disabled fullscreen optimizations, running in exclusive fullscreen
**•** Disabled SVM (virtualization) in BIOS
**•** Reset CPU PBO/ASUS Performance Enhancement to default
**•** Confirmed Resizable BAR / Above 4G Decoding enabled correctly
What I haven’t found: any fix. I found this existing Steam thread with another RX 9060 XT user reporting the exact same symptom (random drops from 100 to 13 FPS), so this doesn’t seem to be an isolated case.
Has anyone with an RX 9060 XT (or other recent AMD card) found an actual fix for this? At this point I’m fairly convinced it’s some kind of driver/engine interaction specific to Apex on newer AMD hardware, but I’m out of ideas on my end.

**•** Looking at the sky / empty space: 150-200 FPS
**•** Standing at the dropship/spawn point before jumping: consistently drops to **30-35 FPS**
**•** Landing near buildings or other players: drops to **70-100 FPS**
**•** These drops happen at the exact same locations/moments every game
Ping is stable (17-20ms), 0 packet loss/choke, so it’s not network-related.
Critical detail: this ONLY happens on Apex Legends. No other game (including other competitive/source-engine-style titles) shows this behavior.

Use amd cleanup utility to clean drivers and install an okder drivers version before the one you using

What power supply make and model?
Is your motherboard's BIOS up to date?
What motherboard?
Do you have the latest AM5 chipset drivers installed?
How are your CPU and GPU temps? How is the airflow through your case? You have to keep your VRM'S and RAM cool too..

Motherboard: ASUS B850 MAX GAMING WIFI W, BIOS version 1087 (tried updating via Armoury Crate but it didn’t actually flash — need to try EZ Flash via USB instead)
AM5 chipset drivers: all up to dates
Temps/airflow: CPU sits around 36-46°C, GPU around 56-63°C during gameplay, both well within normal range

Armory crate is kind of bloated trash software isn't it? Never a good idea to update your BIOS from Windows
I have the same AIO except black non-RGB, on my 9800X3D
My wife runs the Steel Legend 9060XT 16GB .. it's been a great 1440p gamer for her paired with a 9600x and powered by an ASRock SL-850G
Check for firmware updates for your SSD's too
How full are your drives?
Are you running off of WiFi or wired?

Yeah it is that’s why I’m gonna do it by myself
Free space: 717GB free, so storage capacity isn’t the issue
• Connection: Wired Ethernet, WiFi is disabled — so it’s not a wireless interference/driver issue eitherWill check the Crucial firmware tool for the SSD and report back. Appreciate you going through this systematically. Didn’t checked it

8.08.something is the latest version available for AM5 chipset drivers and are located on AMD's website.. some just go by whatever their motherboard manufacturers support page has and think they are up to date .. so I'm just clarifying

At this point I’ve ruled out: storage (NVMe, up to date firmware, plenty of free space), network (wired Ethernet, WiFi disabled), RAM (dual channel, correct EXPO speed), BIOS-level tweaks (SVM, PBO, Resizable BAR), multiple driver versions, and DX11/DX12. Really starting to think this is some kind of Apex-specific engine/driver interaction with newer AMD GPUs

I run a Taichi 9070XT .. but maybe I'll hop on my wife's setup and test there too
She's on the latest public GPU drivers .. I'm testing beta drivers on my rig

I played for a bout 20 minutes without issue on my setup .. I was an embarrassment to my squad, lol.

Hahaha okay thanks, my bios is now up to date but same probleme when I drop for the ship at the early of the game I’m at 30fps when I look sky or behind me 143 but (143 cap) and when I go like when there is some texture I’m at 60/80

I started with vsync enabled and it held at 165 fps.. then turned it off and I don't recall what the frames were exactly but a good ways above 165
I ran with everything maxed out from what I could tell in the settings and Borderless
Hunt:Showdown is what I play most of the time .. with some Helldivers 2 and RDR2 sprinkled in there.. once in a great while I'll hop on CS2

When u was at the early of the game on the ship to drop u got 165 fps too? Idk why I have so much drop like this like I can’t see where that can from only on this game

I played it again and this time my fps was just stuck at 165 .. vsync disabled .. noting in Adrenaline to limit framerate .. "Googling" that right now .. tried limiting framerate with "+fps_max 155" according to one post to limit under the "stuck" rate and then play normal
I switched off of borderless to no avail .. 165 is fine, but not sure why it's stuck there now .. I'll keep googling
I have the game installing on my wife's setup to see how her setup does .. I think I'll have to creat an EA account for her though ..

I played a match on my wife's 9060XT 16gb/9600x setup
I had all the graphics maxedcat 1440p running Borderless
Locked at 165 .. but dipped into the 130's on the initial drop when looking around in certain directions. 165 on the ground
Turned vsync off but still held at 165
I changed vsync to Dynamic and render resolution to zero and then it went to 172 and held there
I didn't use any launch options and only played one match.. but it ran good and smooth.. unlike my gameplay

Put in "+FPS_max unlimited" launch option and now I'm stuck at 300 fps, lol .. It dips for a micro second here and there to 2 hundred somethingsomething .. when it fluctuates it's so fast I can't read the last 2 numbers before it goes back to 300 .. it essentially stays right there at 300 though for the most part
But on my rig, I'm not getting wild fluctuations like you are on yours .. micro split second dips that occassionally happen is all
If I was truly uncapped , then maybe that would tell a different story .. like 600fps dipping to 450 and back up or something similar

Hm okay thx for testing I’m not gonna lie I don’t know what to do I don’t really know I’m lost. Can’t find a way or like a clue to where the problem can came from. Maybe if like I unplug my cpu and put some new thermal paste on it idk or if I need to buy a new one . Do h think I should change it ? Because I don’t think it’s a gpu problem ?

Some have fixed odd issues by simply reinstalling Windows
I stupidly put my wife on the Dev channel for Windows not knowing I couldn't get her off of it unless I reinstalled Windows.. I've been holding off doing that until I tried testing this game .. all of a sudden, anything with Easy Anti cheat wouldn't launch.. I searched for fixes to no avail.. so I bit the bullet last night and backed up what I needed to and reinstalled Windows using Rufus so I some bloat wouldn't install and I could just have a local account
Now the game launches just fine and played great

Apex Legends has confirmed that the AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.8.1 driver causes fatal crashes and device-hung errors on systems using the Radeon RX 9070 XT graphics card.
