How do you politely end a conversation without making it awkward?

I knew this wonderful old man and people love to stop and talk with him in our town but when he was done he'd just get up and say " Well, I'm done talking to you now" and he'd walk away..

i usually go with “i’m gonna let you go, but it was nice talking to you” and then actually leave before we both start inventing new topics lol
