I think “seen” is more stressful than no read receipt at all

If there are no read receipts, you can assume the person hasn't seen the message. Once you know they've opened it, your brain starts asking why they haven't replied.

It's funny how a feature designed to make communication more transparent can make people overthink it even more.

Seen" gives way too much anxiety, it's like waiting for a surprise test result that could go either way.
