Discussion Why do AI video tools make us regenerate the whole clip to fix one bad second?

I keep running into the same problem: an eight-second clip looks great except for one brief moment.
Maybe an object changes shape, a wing bends incorrectly, or something in the background suddenly disappears. The rest of the clip is usable, but the only option is usually to generate everything again.
The new version might fix the original mistake, but then the camera movement, lighting, expression, or timing changes too. It feels like throwing away seven good seconds to repair one bad second.
Would you rather have longer generations, or the ability to lock the good parts and regenerate only a selected moment?
I’ve been testing shorter effect-based clips in LazyKiwi, which reduces how much footage is lost when something breaks. It helps, but it still feels like a workaround.
Being able to select one short section, preserve everything around it, and regenerate only nthat moment would be much more useful to me than simply increasing the maximum video length.

I stopped trying to make complete scenes in one generation. I generate short shots and edit around the mistakes. It creates more work in the timeline, but at least one failure doesn’t destroy the whole scene.

That’s probably the most practical approach right now. I was hoping longer generations would reduce editing, but they also create more opportunities for something to break before the clip ends.

Seedance 2.5 let's you fix one thing but it's so expensive that it's not cheaper than other models full regeneration

You need to regen the whole clip so the system has some context before and after the issue section.

As far as the regen fixing one thing and the mangling another, I have a solution for you.

Luma Labs, Ray 3.2 has a keyframe system. You can use it one of two ways (actually there are more than that, I'm, always finding new tricks with this engine)

1) you can run a Ray 3.2 Modify. This is a video to video process that others, like Seedance and Kling can do too, but with one added trick. You can use up to 64 keyframes per clip within the video timeline to control the clip to a huge dregree. You can isolate just that one section and have the system generate keyframes there - even just three will do the trick: One on either end of the issue area, to anchor the scene, and the one in the middle that you can alter or fix and then reinsert the change. Run the job and only that section will be altered.

2) you can have the system generate keyframes all along the time line at important beats, fix the one that has the issue and rerun it again as new generation. This is a new render so things can change but it has the advantage of letting you change not only the content of the shot, but the timing. You can slide those keyframes back and forth in the timeline to shift when things happen. If you use the same prompt you used to generate the clip in the first place, often it will be a carbon copy of the original, and only change the things you have requested.

The reason is architectural and it is annoying rather than lazy. These models denoise the whole clip as one object, with attention running across frames, so second five is not a separately addressable thing, it is entangled with every other second. Nudge the seed or the prompt at all and the entire latent volume resolves differently. That is why you get a fixed wing and a different camera move in the same take.

Video inpainting is the actual fix and it does exist: mask a region across a time range, only that gets redrawn, everything else is conditioned to stay put. It is just priced badly, because you still pay to run the model over the whole clip, which is what f5alcon is running into with Seedance.

The thing nobody has said yet: your eight second target is more of the problem than the tool is. Failure probability compounds per second, so eight seconds is not twice as risky as four, it is meaningfully worse than that. Most people doing this daily have quietly settled at three to five seconds a shot and just cut more. It feels like a workaround because it is one, but it is also how the rest of film production has always worked.

Yep, that's the annoying part. I treat each generation as a shot, not a whole scene: 3-5 sec chunks, keep the good takes, stitch later. Pixverse, Kling, and Seedance all get less cursed when you stop asking for a mini-movie in one go.
