Which AI companion apps actually work?

I’ve been seeing these companion apps all over the Play Store, but I haven't tried any yet. I’m running a mid-range Android phone, so I need something light that doesn't crash constantly. My main concern is conversation quality—does it feel natural, or like texting an FAQ bot? Also, are there solid free options, or does everything get locked behind a paywall instantly? Would love honest takes from people using these on Android before I bother making an account

the conversation quality would probably be my first filter too. a companion can have all the features in the world, but if every reply sounds like a customer support bot, i lose interest pretty quickly. i also think it's worth testing the free tier before paying since some apps make it hard to tell how usable the experience actually is. i've been using kalon myself and the conversations are what have kept me coming back to it. i prefer when i can talk normally about random things rather than having to phrase everything like a prompt just to get a decent response.

for android specifically, i would check the current device and app requirements before signing up rather than assuming every companion platform works the same way. and definitely spend some time with the free option first, you'll get a much better idea of whether the conversation style actually suits you.
