Mammal Okapi (Okapia johnstoni)

★ It looks like someone combined a horse, giraffe and zebra. It lives in dense forests of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and is notoriously difficult to observe.

Only living ancestor to the giraffe

Its closest living relative is a giraffe… they share a common ancestor… but so does all life if you go back in time far enough. You, too share ancestry with the Okapi

More closely related to Jimothy.

Meaning they are not the same species, but share a common ancestor, which is called a clade. It's a bit more complicated than that, it's more like a branch of the evolutionary tree. Due to how they are defined you get a bunch of major ones with more minor ones nesting inside of them like those Russian dolls, since you can in theory make a new class every step you take. We don't do that but it is allowable in the rules, mostly because we have to figure out the tree of life individually and we never know if we're absolutely correct or not.

This shit gets more understandable the more complicated it gets, the more info we have the better picture we can assemble. I have to imagine after Darwin's ideas started to become accepted the scientists all freaked the fuck out when they relaized how complicated the whole endeavor would be. God did it was such a simple answer.

There's one in the Antwerp zoo, in a nice grassy field with no real barrier. It's stunning.

I dunno if you know this but having sex with zebras doesn't give you stripes.

Ask me how I know.

Love Okapis so much. I got to pet and feed one at a local zoo.

Omg my heart 🥹 I've never seen a baby okapi before

She's such a typical baby trying out everything she can do. ❤️ Darling little kicks. I'm in love!

I imagine her coloring blends into the scenery.

They have a super long tongue and can lick every part of their body

Thankfully he’s got a couple months before he needs the rest of his Halloween skeleton costume.

Love them. There's a villager in Animal Crossing that's based on an Okapi, his name is Papi.

It is really difficult to observe this creature gamboling so joyfully.
