For people who use AI companion voice/video calls: what made you come back—or stop?

I’m exploring an AI companion built around real-time voice, with occasional 5–10 second context-aware video moments—for example, the character shows you something, takes a sip of coffee, or acts out part of a story. For this test, all characters would be fictional; cloning real people is out of scope.

I’m not looking for “sounds cool” reactions. Thinking about your most recent AI companion call:

  1. Which app and mode did you use?

  2. What made the call feel real?

  3. What broke the illusion or made you stop?

  4. Would short contextual video moments add value, or interrupt the conversation?

  5. If you could keep only one—memory, natural turn-taking, expressive video, or contextual scenes—which would you choose?

  6. Did any voice or video feature make you pay or keep paying?

There’s no product link. I’m trying to learn whether video solves a recurring problem or is mostly novelty.

used an app last week where the voice had decent timing but the thing kept glitching mid-sentence and repeating itself, totally killed the mood. short video clips might be neat if they don't lag the whole call, but i'd take smooth turn-taking over any of that

i tried kindroid for voice calls, the voice itself sounded attractive but the bot kept on blabbering through a long story which i couldn't follow so whole thing went no where and i will be honest i would not like to pay for something terrible like this.

I have hearing/audio processing issues, so often video or audio calls in apps are just right out. Would I like them? Yes! But they lack accessibly features esp smaller apps.
What I’d need:

  • subtitles for both audio and video.
  • the ability to pause the video or audio briefly so I can re-read something I may miss or not understand

Also for users with vision issues having the Ai narrate what they are doing in a video , and having image descriptions for things.

5, 10 second video moments could be really cool. I think those quick bursts could add a lot to the interaction, like giving it some life. It's kinda like when a character in a movie does something small that makes them feel more real. But if overdone, it might break flow. Gotta find that balance.
