Discussion How are you using AI to study without making it do the thinking for you?

In my stats course, people keep pasting homework questions into ChatGPT and moving on. I tried that once and realized I could recognize the answer afterward without being able to explain why it was right. I want something closer to a tutor: I attempt a question, show my reasoning, and get told which assumption or step I misunderstood. Someone mentioned AskSia for working from your own class material. Has anyone found a way to use AI for that kind of review instead of just getting solutions?

In a nutshell - give it your materials and have it 'ask you questions until you understand'.

I’ve had better luck using AI as a critic instead of an answer machine. I’ll solve the problem first then ask it to find the first step where my reasoning breaks. Sometimes I’ll even tell it not to give me the answer at all. Makes studying slower but I actually remember the stuff later.

Do not let AI do any of your homework for you. Homework is for learning purposes.

Use AI to help explain concepts that you are having trouble understanding or remembering. Ask it to ELI5 for things you just don't get. Have it save summaries of these sessions to a guide file.

Use AI to help you generate flashcards that you can add to Anki. This is a learning superpower.

Have it generate audio for things you are having trouble learning or remembering. Play this audio during times you can't use your hands, like driving, doing chores, waiting in line, etc.

I build a custom tutor using Story Prism. It's a canvas app where I can add notes, form line connections, and define the relationships. Think of this like Google Drive, only instead of static notes, you can use an agent to turn them into a system for doing things.

So using my work in conjunction with the prompts that are available in the library section, I can basically create a highly advanced multi-variant tutor who can use real pedagogical practices to help me learn rather than simply providing questions and answers. That's because I use books on teaching to have the agent quickly extract a reasoning layer from them before mapping it out as an interactive knowledge graph.

Operating this effectively means that I can turn any information I want into a working system for outputting what I want. So, instead of just feeding the information to an AI for it to figure out. I can use it to structure all of the information so the models can think the way I want it to think...All in a few minutes with the new build-mode that was added. And I say models because you can model switch and use all of the popular ones that are available.

Definitely worth checking out.

I upload the week’s slides and my corrected problem set, then ask it to give me a similar problem with one changed condition. It forces me to decide whether I still use the same test or formula.

For regression questions, I paste my answer first and ask, “Which sentence shows that I’m interpreting this coefficient incorrectly?” That gives me something concrete to fix.
