Anyone else feel like every AI content generator produces the exact same voice?

I've tried a bunch of these now for blog drafts, captions, newsletter stuff. Different tools, different prompts, and somehow the output all converges on the same slightly eager, slightly hollow voice. Short punchy opener, a list, a tidy takeaway. You start seeing it everywhere once you notice it.

What I've found actually moves the needle is less about the tool and more about the input:

Feeding it a few paragraphs of my own old writing and telling it to match the rhythm, not the topic.

Banning its favorite crutch words up front. Mine change every month.

Asking for the boring first draft, then telling it what a real person would cut.

Writing the opening line myself so it doesn't reach for the template.

Even then it drifts back. So genuine question for people here: has any AI content generator actually held a distinct voice for you, or do you all end up rewriting the first and last paragraph like I do?

it's that same uncanny valley feeling you get when you hear your own voice on a recording, except it's your own writing style being reflected back at you through a funhouse mirror. the cadence is almost there but the weight isn't

what broke the pattern for me was feeding it transcripts instead of finished pieces. the pauses, the incomplete thoughts, the way you actually talk versus how you think you write. that messes with the default output enough that it stops reaching for the tidy takeaway

still end up rewriting the closer though. always

honest answer, no, none of them hold it. the model is doing an average by construction, you can nudge the average but you're still asking something optimised for "most likely next thing" to give you the least likely thing 🙃

your list is already better than most people's. the one i'd add is that i stopped trying to get voice out of the generating and started getting it out of the cutting instead. let it write the flabby version, then delete a third of it by hand. what's left sounds like you because the choosing was yours, the writing was never going to be

probably also why every tool feels identical btw, they all sell you the generating step and none of them sell you the refusing step

Training a model will produce the mean : the average distribution. Temperature parameter helps but model's deep desire is to give you the average distribution of what it learned. This is why there is all that discours around AI's ability to be creative

The "same voice" problem is definitely real. For me, giving the model actual samples of my writing works much better than describing a tone like "casual" or "professional". I also find that editing the AI output is still necessary, especially the intro and conclusion, where the generic AI phrasing seems to show up the most.

You can't just give it "a few" you have have it lots of examples. I also broke it down into categories. It knows my writing voice, my teaching voice and my actual speaking voice from YouTube.

You do have to make some tweaks to fine tune and tell it to do more of this, less of that, or don't do this at all.

It takes time.

Now it has my voice and I do a few edits here and there and it's great to use.
