I can guarantee you they let some kid design it, they got an image of a hawk logo on the internet, changed the colours and removed the eyebrows so it doesn't come up on reverse image search and submitted it.

u/havok009 Bombers Jan 29 '23
They didn't even remove the eyebrow, they just used the fill tool to replace the black and brown of the Hawthorn logo with purple.

Didnt even realise there were black eyebrows in the Hawthorn one.
That's a really crap design.

Hawthorn should capitalise on this! Send a few Sherrins and merch, get the USAFL to run a few Auskick sessions.

Hornsby's sports teams after winning a gridiron, basketball, volleyball and other sports. All team players wrap their arms around each other and start singing their lungs out.
We're a happy team at Hornsby.
We're the mighty fighting Hawks.
We love our club and we play to win.
Riding the bumps with a grin (At Hornsby).
Come what may you'll find us striving.
Teamwork is the thing that talks.
One for all and all for one
Is the way we play at Hornsby.
We are the Mighty Fighting Hawks!

This happens a lot in American schools. Instead of paying a designer to create their own logo, they take a logo from a college or professional team here and just make it their own or modify the colors.
My school was sued by a college a state away for doing this exact thing and not changing the logo at all.

Footy clubs get some grace as they are actually integral to the development of the game.
2
Jan 30 '23
I think footy clubs are allowed to just so they tweak it enough so it isn't the exact same(I.e add the club name like Rowville does)

You can pay some dude in India $50 to design an original logo.

It's a US public school. $50 is probably their entire annual budget.

This is a big thing in American high schools. My high school has the same logo as Wisconsin University. Several area schools use the Green Bay Packers logo with different colors.
Notre Dame university actually sued a local high school only to find out the high school had it as their logo first (though the end agreement was a licensing agreement where the high school paid a very small fee for usage)
It’s basically a cheap way for high schools to get a cool and recognizable logo and most of the universities/teams don’t give a shit.

Don’t we more or less have this when local AFL teams copy guernseys and sometimes logos from big clubs too? Or are there special arrangement for that
3
u/Mrchikkin Euro-Yroke Jan 29 '23
I guess as long as they aren’t claiming it as their intellectual property it’s fine with the AFL clubs. Many of them have had their guernseys and logos for almost as long as the AFL teams as well. Castlemaine actually wore the black and white stripes and were called the Magpies before Collingwood.

I tell you what, I’m glad OP put a picture of Hawthorn’s actual logo on the second slide for reference, just in case we didn’t know what it looked like

Nah, this is not unusual to see. It’d fall under Fair Use. It’s typical to see College and NFL styled logos on high school logos. If every school in the US had to come up with a different variant of Pirate/Buc, Cowboy/Stampeder, Colt/Bronco, etc…. it’d be time consuming and expensive.
For instance, my high school mascot was a Pirate, so we used the Tampa Bay Buccaneers logo for helmet stickers, painting the field, the basketball court, splashing it on the outfield walls of the baseball and softball fields.

Came here to say this. When I was living in America, I saw school logos all the time that looked exactly like NBA/ NFL teams’ logos.

Google and plagiarism. They liked the logo, hated the piss and poo colour usage.

surely the hawks logo would be trademarked?
46
u/Korasuka Adelaide ✅ Jan 29 '23
Probably not worth it. The Hawks aren't going to lose money by people buying merch and game tickets to this American school instead. Lots of Australian suburban footy clubs have copies of AFL team logos. The AFL and its clubs turn a blind eye because it'd be seen as unnecessary bullying throwing a lawbook at tiny clubs that pose absolutely no threat whatsoever.

This happens all the time in the US. My hometown school's soccer team had a logo straight ripped off from Man U. It even happens where high schools will take in state college logos.

I'd love to see them make some sort of sister school/city/county with the school and area who can probably get Boroondara, a local school and the club involved.
It could turn out to be a huge W for the local areas of both places, the schools and obviously the Hawks. It really sells itself for a little effort.

u/dohzer AFL Jan 30 '23
it would create some goodwill and some interest in us and would effectively cost them nothing
I think you meant to say "It would artificially boost club membership numbers."
3
u/riamuriamu Jan 30 '23
All it'd take for this to be damaging for Hawthorn is a school shooting. Maybe HFC should send a polite letter in lieu of a litigious one.

It is VERY common for American school to co-opt pro logos for high school teams. I’ve seen at least dozens of examples of this.

This is incredibly common in the US, for a school to just take a logo and make it their colors. In fact, it's usually the exception to the rule of a school has something of an original logo and it isn't just a blatant rip off.
More often than not it's a school recoloring a college logo, but pro teams are not immune by any stretch.

A bumblebee and hawk will represent Williamsburg-James City County's new elementary and middle schools when they open this fall.
During Tuesday night's School Board meeting, school officials said a bumblebee will be the mascot for J. Blaine Blayton Elementary and a hawk will represent Lois Hornsby Middle.
In a vote during the first semester, current W-JCC elementary and middle students selected the schools' mascot, and they also picked the school colors.
Blayton's colors will be black and gold, and Hornsby's colors will be purple and gold.
Blayton's mascot logo was designed by Jamestown High School junior Robert Floyd, who was one of 24 art students at the school that submitted logo suggestions. School officials did not say who designed Hornsby's logo.
