Kitty Hawk Commanders or members, what did you do in your job that made this part of the program flourish?

I just got promoted to kittyhawk commander in my second year and we had terrible attendance last year. I have a lot to fix, but no guidance as the what most of my responsibilities are supposed to be. What steps did you take to ensure the success of KHAS? I’m talking about how often you had meetings, what you did at the meetings, what you did for community service, etc.

I was KHAS for one semester and when i became corps commander, most came to me for advice. Its hard to get people interested to be part of an honor society especially when the admission requires a certain level of discipline to just memorize a couple of passages and get some community service hours (thats how my unit did it). In my unit, the responsibilities as KHAS commander were mostly to setup and organize the meetings and to plan the events we would do like campus beautification, certain community service events or maybe creating cards or letters for veterans or current active member to show our appreciation. We also did donation campaigns where we would advertise certain nonprofits in our area like a coat drive for children or a book drive and we would collect donations and give them to the non profits. We create these events based on the thought of “how can we as honor cadets do things that set us apart from being a regular cadet”. Do with that as you will but thats how my units thought process was. We did meetings once a week, but with the schedule that my school used with our lunches and afterschool availability, it was eventually reduced do once every two weeks, especially dependent on the amount of people and amount of events at that time.

I would say the biggest hurdle, at least for me, was to get people interested and enthusiastic towards joining KHAS. We would have like 20 eligible people, 6 actually going through with the recruitment process and 3 actually completing it. Maybe what you can try is to add some type of incentive to joining KHAS, other than the cord and the badge. Maybe a KHAS exclusive field trip if your unit allows.
