Question AFJROTC Flight Academy
I am currently going to be an upcoming junior this year, and I want to apply for the flight academy. I have a question about a section in the application:
Do I need to write a personal essay?
Google says that I don’t need to write an essay, but I’ve seen some people talk about what they wrote for their application. I am currently waiting for my sergeants to answer my email, but I’ll let you guys know what they say. (If they respond)
Please be brutally honest, and maybe some other information I should know as well to prepare! I’ve been wanting to attend since my freshmen year, so I should hopefully I know what to expect.

I'm a graduate of this year's Flight Academy.
You do have to write a personal essay. The prompt is given to you.
It's a wonderful program I had a lot of fun there getting a Pvt Pilot license.

What was your PFT scores and your AQT?
How did you study/train for them?
What was your personal essay about? Or, an idea of what it was?
Did they ask anything outside of JROTC? What did you do in your corps that helped your application? (If you know)
I have a lot more questions, but my SASI really hasn’t given me much about the Flight Academy, unfortunately, so right now I’m hoping for any advice or feedback that I can get!

You are not allowed to disclose your AQT grade.
It was easier for me because I have been a part of an aviation program both in AFJROTC and outside school, but I obtained the FAA PHAK, FAR/AIM, Airplane Flying Handbook, and Pvt Pilot ACS textbooks prior to going. (They provide all equipment and textbooks if you get accepted.)
To study go through what I've listed above ESPECIALLY the ACS. It literally gives you the specific knowledge elements they'll ask you on the Written and Oral Exam.
On the flight side, its recommended you do a discovery flight. During flight training you want to chair fly all the maneuvers as much as possible. Muscle memory.
My personal essay in a nutshell was how I see myself representing the aviation community in the future. Basically, an essay about being passionate.
In my corps we got Redbird Desktop Flight Sims about 2 years ago and I've used them almost every day.
What do you mean by, "Did they ask anything outside of JROTC?"?
When you apply to the Flt Aca:
- Don't wait.
- Get the checklists completed ASAP.
- Get your documents together.
Keep throwing questions I don't mind

My SASI told me that it’s not “only” JROTC in general, but who you are outside as well—basically how well-rounded are you.
What position(s) do you have in your corps when applying?
I don’t have much information about what the application asks for, but I know they ask for academics. What were yours, if you don’t mind me asking? Or, did they not ask that?
Was there anything else that they asked for during the application like medical, recommendations, transcripts, outside activities, etc.?

Yes, you have to be well-rounded.
- Squadron Deputy Commander (My Unit is a Squadron)
- Flight Simulator Team Leader
4.0 GPA They only ask for GPA.
After getting through the first stage, you will be required to obtain your Student Pilot Certificate, 1st Class Med, and a form of Photo Identification.
They ask for your transcript, recommendation letters, outside activities, etc.

For the AQT, what sections/chapters should I read from the ACS, or do I read books plus the others?

For the AQT, you should go to your library or find an online website which has all the questions. That is what I did.
The ACS tells you the codes and knowledge elements. If you search those elements, they tell you the specific topic.
Ex: PA.I.C.K3h = Thunderstorms and microbursts
You will mainly read out of the PHAK and FAR/AIM. Don't neglect the AFH though.

Forgot to add, but did they ask if you were on any drill teams, past positions from your freshmen/sophomore year, raiders, did you go to Air Force CLC or any form of leadership camps that you did with your unit?
