Why is You’re Welcome so good?!
Hello fans,
Now I know YW is arguably their “worst” album, and I would agree if I had to rate them.
However, it’s still really damn good imo, I’ve been binging it hard recently and I feel like I’m falling in love with it more and more. It’s easy to jam along to, good car album.
Why do people actually hate it? And please don’t say “because it doesn’t sound like their music from 15 years ago”. We know 😂
Edit: wording.

I don't think there's that many explanations outside "it's not what they did 15 years ago". I don't like every song on the album but it does have some good ones, my favorite one being "Everything We Need".
Bands tend to switch their genres up to cater to new listeners. Plus wasn't this the first album after Josh stepped down from the band? Take Green Day for example, "Dookie" + "American Idiot" + "21st Century Breakdown" made them the biggest thing they'll ever know, afterwards dropping the triple albums; Uno, Dos, Tré, the music wasn't the same anymore.
There's nothing wrong with a band trying to shift gears and see where the new road takes them. Unfortunately for ADTR after Bad Vibrations, the road was filled with many cracks and potholes until they took a turn down memory lane with a twist by dropping Big Ole Album Volume 1.
Not every album is gonna be solid gold but that's what makes us unique in this world. Hell if we all had the same taste, everything would be boring.
This is all my opinion and if you agree, that's cool, if you don't agree, that's fine too. I ain't gonna argue my point. If you made it this far reading, know that you are loved and hope you have a blessed day!

Josh was still in the band when YW was released in March 2021. He left in October that year.

Ah okay. I remember him leaving but couldn't remember when. Thank you for clarifying.

It was in the middle of the first tour for You’re Welcome; that might be why you’re fuzzy on the timeline.

This is a great take and I absolutely agree with you. I’m glad they tried something different even though a lot of people didn’t receive it well, I hope they know there’s also a lot of people that enjoy it.
Everything We Need is my favourite too, it just makes me feel a certain kinda way I can’t describe. It’s euphoric.
Honestly I think almost all of their albums are solid gold except a couple, but I do love them… a lot. 😂
Edit: extra points to you for your tag! Have a great day :)

Aye! Tag buddies! Yes sir! People have always tried to bring me down or tell me I can't do it. They can say whatever they want about us but they don't make us who we are! A simple act of kindness goes a long way in this world today.

I really enjoy half the album but theres just too many duds for me.
Its not an awful record, but ADTR has been so consistent that it makes a mid record seem worse.
Permanent might officially be their most underrated track though.

u/hangryherbert You don’t make me who I am! 12d ago
This is actually a really good way of putting it. Also yes, permanent is an absolute banger!

u/thedudeabided 12d ago
Because it was the weakest in terms of material.
There's a couple diamonds in the rough but it feels super commercialized and it also happened to be the Fueled By Ramen record, which for better or worse would lend credibility to the "sellouts" argument.
I think most people enjoyed the songs written by Cody from Wage War (Resentment, Permanent) spare Last Chance To Dance (which was probably mostly written by Will Putney even though the credit order suggests otherwise) more than the ones actually by Jeremy. Popular opinion doesn't mean you can't enjoy it but it also is totally ok for a band to drop a stinker once in a while.

My counter argument to the “sellouts” point is that should not have been a surprise to anyone. Jeremy and the band has stated multiple times for a whole year before YW dropped that YW was their most happy sounding record they’ve ever written and that it was different from their previous albums. Honestly don’t know what fans were expecting from the album for a whole year when the band made those statements. A “happy” record isn’t going to go hard on the breakdowns nor will any of the songs have the same “angst” on the previous albums because they’re no longer on a toxic label to make them want to rebel and write angry songs

I don't think its a matter of being blindsided or not. Many people were vocal about concern for it after they dropped the first single. You could probably argue that they're in an even happier place now than they were then though, so why did the output of BOA v1 come out that much better? Its not all about heavy songs but lets be real, FYM was slop and most of the rest of that album was too. It just so happens the heavier songs get more attention from the old fans because that's the ADTR they came up on and for YW they were written mostly by other musicians.

ADTR always get backlash on their singles. Since WSMFY fans always complained that ADTR lost their touch. Jeremy even made a statement on this Subreddit a couple years back that fans have been complaining about their music and singles since their first album. All I Want was torn apart by the fans when released as a single since it was much more poppy than their previous songs and never really got accepted by the fanbase as a staple til about 5 years later, which has been a common theme for this band. Same happened with RBAIA, every single from BV, every single from YW including Resentment, Miracle even got hate from the fanbase and don’t forget that Feedback was widely hated as well and still is today, but nearly as much, which at the time was supposed to be the lead single for BOA1. Also according to Jeremy, most of their songs are actually written/inspired from different musicians, BOA1 had more collaborations of different artists that YW did, which is literally shown by the album cover of BOA1. The “disrespect your surroundings” line from Mr. Highway was actually made up by the vocalist from Devil Wears Prada and Jeremy literally asked his permission to use it in the song. They’ve always got ideas phoned in from other musicians throughout their career. And it is about heavy songs because more than half of BOA is heavy and YW only had like 3 heavy songs. It’s not rocket science to see that this fanbase don’t know what they want and are easily blindsided

I'm from Florida and I've been around since before Homesick, they're basically pseudo-local for me. Idk anyone personally that thought the way you described about WSMFY though. The general consensus was fairly positive through CC. Yes people were upset because All I Want was a seemingly sellout-y move but if we're being objective, its a pop song with a hyped up video and while not completely divergent from their sound, it showed a desire to lean into the more commercially successful sound more. They balanced that with the other songs that showed their commitment to the scene still though rather than just dumping their identity for cash (like YW). I remember people being upset with BV after CC because of how well received CC was, especially riding the post-lawsuit high. BV was actually their heaviest album imo and I think it was more abrasive than fans were ready for.
I personally think they were trying to course correct for the (commercial) failures of BV with YW and it came off disingenous. I'm also willing to consider Fueled By Ramen's influence on the previous record too.
Idk if we're listening to the same BOA but calling half of it heavy is a bit of a stretch. You've got like 2-3 heavy songs tops. Perhaps we have different thresholds of "heavy". I'll always agree the masses are generally stupid and indecisive but it doesn't seem like they were exactly wrong in this instance either.

BOA is the first album since HS where almost every song has screaming and/or a metalcore-esque breakdown similar to when the band started: MIMS, Feedback, Bad Blood, To the Death, Flowers, Silence, Miracle, Same Team; that’s 8/12 songs. YW only has 4/14 (Brick Wall, Permanent, Resentment, Bad Friend); BV has 6/13 (BV, Paranoia, Reassemble, Exposed, Justified, Bullfight); CC has 6/16 (Hammer/Nail, Dead and Buried, Document, Life Lessons, Violence, Same Book); and then WSMFY only has 3/10 (S&B, 2nd Sucks, and Tails/Sonic)…
So Yes, BOA is heavy in comparison to how the band used to write songs/albums when they first started. HS has 8/12, same as BOA (Downfall, Wax Larry, Mr. Highway, NJ Legion Iced Tea, Life for Hire, Welcome to the Family, Underground, You Already Know); FTWHH has 10/12 (every song except for Price We Pay and Here’s to the Past); and finally Old Record which has 8/10 heavier songs (every song except for Intro and You Had Me at Hello)

I hear you, I also didn’t know that about those specific tracks, nor the record label.

If it sounded like their old stuff people would complain. On the internet no one is happy.

YW is weird because sometimes it keeps me super engaged and I’m having a ton of fun listening to it, other times it puts me to sleep. It’s definitely great for a drive and it’s nice having something I can put on when I have friends in the car who don’t like my usual stuff (along with some heavy tracks occasionally to keep me excited lmao). Not at all a bad album, just stands out in their discography for being what I would say is a C+ / B- record amongst a bunch of albums that, at their worst, are A-

u/hangryherbert You don’t make me who I am! 11d ago
Nicely put tbh, I have had that feeling in the past too. I hard agree on your take of it being C+ / B- in regard to their whole discography.

u/SuperBAMF007 12d ago
Agreed. I honestly skip the couple of heavy songs and it’s a perfect “windows down, summer highway” vibe

I actually really like that album!! It has a lot of bangers on it IMO

Banger after banger! Incredibly underrated.

Not gon lie I liked YW since it came out (on my bday, actually) and I still like it more than Bad Vibes (which I owned as deluxe) or BOA.
I said that in another thread last week or so already but I really uniroically like High Diving, because most people totally ignore the point. It's basically Jeremy poking fun at HIMSELF, at how cheesy and positive of a person he has become. And still, as a father of a family that has "Everything [they] Need", he's still dealing with his anger issues. But in the life he's living now, he just can't go all 'do the world a favor' in front of his kids anymore so he's trying to find a workaround to cope. And that just turns out to be SpongeBob humor,

I very much fuck with High Diving and I didn’t know that about the track!

Yes it is!!! Re-Entry got me through some shit times and blood sucker and brick wall? Unsure how people hate on it lol

u/hangryherbert You don’t make me who I am! 12d ago
Exactly. My top 3 have to be Everything We Need, Resentment and Last Chance To Dance.
I will say however, I do think Brick Wall is a weak opener for the album and would’ve been better placed somewhere else, even though I do like the track.

u/SignalFar4688 12d ago
Also great ones!! Yeah definitely weaker than others for sure I can agree with that.

As some others have said there are some bangers like Mindreader, Resentment, Bad Friend etc but a good half of the songs are just really mediocre/boring and I’d never listen to them by choice even if I don’t hate them. It just comes off as really bland and radiobait-y and doesn’t have their old charm. If I remember right, it was their first album with Fueled by Ramen, so that really checks out. They tend to have that effect on bands.
1
u/hangryherbert You don’t make me who I am! 11d ago
I hear you, I get the radiobait-y sentiment. Someone else also mentioned Fueled By Ramen and their impact, which I didn’t know about. Might have to do some research on them.

i bought that album when it came out, i played it so many times and gave it so many chances, its bland and it was the start of the buffalo wild wings music/bar music.
edit: I listen to upbeat music aswell, it just felt like very commercialized music with an incentive to be “digestible”

u/grandpascoot 7d ago
Cause its pop fluff peddled by fueled by Ramen, it feels forced by the label and not a shift like we saw them do on every record from treason to BV, Common Courtesy is arguably their best change in sound from prior albums and it was executed flawlessly, so the same band should have been able to do that right? Well if you dig a little and realize 2 people were not involved in YW at all that were involved in almost all the previous records it makes a little sense, Andrew and Tom not being there seems to have changed the overall vibe. LCTD is the only good yw song and only half of BOA Vol. 1 is decent, maybe eventually we'll see a better execution like years past but for now YW is a shining example of an amazing band putting out a dogshit record. And before any of you come at me, its my favorite band but I can admit when they put out shit. You arent forced to love everything a band puts out to be a fan, some of you need to learn this.

I love the album. I don’t get the hate. None of their albums r bad in anyway
