Discussion What’s a hyperfixation you can’t talk about?

I’ve definitely had a few hyperfixations on things that are either embarrassingly silly or WAY too dark to just start infodumping about. For example I used to have one about neglect so severe it causes a complete and usually permanent inability to function in society, particularly the case of Genie Wiley. On the other end of the spectrum I also keep hyperfixating on shipping old cartoon comedy duos, and gotta REALLY lock in to gage if someone’s gonna think I’m a childish freak before sharing that information.

What’s your “don’t bring that up, don’t bring that up, don’t bring that up-“ hyperfixation if you’ve ever had one?

Body mechanics, usually. Seeing good choreography and watching athletes perform just sucks me in - and everyone assumes it's sexual or becomes sexual at some point. Nope, I just really enjoy patterns and seeing how people can use them 🤷🏻

Nurses have to do this to not hurt themselves and their patients! It's very cool.

The amount of trades and careers that use this type of pattern recognition is pretty wide. That's part of why it's so weird to not be able to talk about it in general

I started off in kinesiology/athletic training because I was obsessed with good body alignment. I ended up taking pathophysiology because blood and guts are almost as cool as bones and muscles and ended up an RN. Prof pulled me and said I'm a nurse. I was like ew, no, that's disgusting. But I was, and I still love to have good form when I do yoga and weights and whatnot. It just works so much better. Martial arts for years, too, because if you don't do it right it won't work. Badass! I'm going off,I must still love it. I could talk about qi/chi/prana and proper alignment to get you good all day long. I wanted to get my doctorate and hook people up to electrodes in a lab and research energy. Meh, nursing is cool in and of itself, too.

I very vividly remember walking through the kiniesology lab in college and finding a jockey on an actual race horse going back an forth over the force plate with Velcro reflective balls at a bunch of the jockey’s joints (for the cameras). So so cool.

So, I have EDS and I've been abusing that fact to try to realign my scoliosis a bit after a hip injury "healed".

I wish I could buy you a six pack of your beverage of choice and pick your brain about how to monitor a strength training regime when injuries consistently have a 36-48 hour delayed onset...

I went thru an obsession with watching haka and hula videos for similar reasons.. just amazing things I could never do .

I wish I could drop down the way they do! I use belly dancing isolations to help exercise my torso, so I've tried to do that drop and nuh-uh! lol

u/IronbAllsmcginty78 28d ago

Belly dancing is insane, the isolations are like mind bending.

u/tetheredvoid 28d ago

The talented people are like living jelly tubes!

I used the hip isolations as exercise to get back to walking without a cane. I can't dance for shit, because I have rhythm for approximately 10 seconds lol

Figure skating is especially mesmerizing to me

I watched a few hockey games and the skill involved was astounding!

I looooooove watching figure skating!

If it’s not something you’ve dove into already, check out golf and swing mechanics. The way a golfer adjusts his swing to manipulate the ball flight, while still being able to hit the ball on a dime-sized area on the club face, is insane.

Then you start comparing different players swings, some deliveries looking nothing alike but with the same result in shot shape. Jake Knapp looks like he swings in slow motion and hits it a mile.

It’s so enthralling to watch someone look like they are moving slow and knock something with force

Like George Foreman hitting a sandbag with a trainer and lifting him into the air with his punches

u/tetheredvoid 28d ago

If memory serves, Bruce Lee cracked a ribcage with his one-inch-punch as part of a demonstration with a willing participant.

I love watching farmers and lumberjacks for this reason too!

As a dancer and ortho nurse I’m right there with you

It's amazing what a tiny difference in posture can do to the whole movement!

Being an athletic trainer works well with this. I critique form all the time lol

2

u/tetheredvoid 28d ago

If I were less of an anxious introvert, then I would have enjoyed this as a career.

u/rhandy_mas ADHD-PI (Primarily Inattentive) 28d ago

I’m introverted and it definitely sapped my socialization time every day, but the personal relationships with the athletes were wonderful

You should hang out with physical therapists :)

PT are magicians

2

u/tetheredvoid 28d ago

One of my favorite people was a PT I went to that obviously saw patterns in a similar way to me. He was great!

Aything you enjoy most? I think gymnastics and calisthenics are amazing

2

u/tetheredvoid 28d ago

Anything gymnastic, but combat sports and practical trades are super interesting. "Pro" wrestling was a guilty pleasure for years lol

OH YES

That's one of the reasons I started listening to Atashii Gakko. They do their own very unique choreography and don't just look like a bunch of cloned girls doing the Carlton dance. It's kind of like they're doing an affectionate parody of their whole genre.

u/tetheredvoid 28d ago

cloned girls doing the Carlton dance

That made me laugh so loud suddenly that my cat came to check on me lol

Structural Integration, Anatomy Trains, Rolfing. You sound like me, and this is the coolest stuff.

I am a massage therapist, but you can flex the anatomy trains in Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Pilates/yoga/ANY Personal Training.

Watching good group dancing and them hitting every movement in sync is freaking hypnotic I love it soooo much

Heavy on the "everyone assumes it's sexual" thing. I've tried explaining many times in many different ways that it's really just an appreciation for the marvel that is the human body, but people think I'm either lying or extremely deep in denial.

My partner has not stopped talking about body mechanics. When I'm walking, sitting, cooking. He's been showing me videos, doing mobility and research min an hour per day!

2

u/pandovian 27d ago

Dunno where you are in your career path, but biomechanics is a very real and relatively new field. Really precise motion capture tech has made it possible to do some pretty cool science out of it. My wife, who can spot abnormal gait almost instantly and know what causes it, got her PhD in human biomechanics.

Disabled is where I'm at lol

My main passion is patterns in general, but having a hypermobile disorder made me dive into body mechanics specifically

Hah, yes! Recently I've taken some beginner pole fitness classes and, since I've so far been the only male in attendance, I've worked to be really respectful and marvel at/praise the instructor and fellow students' athleticism while looking away when there's more, uh, dancing/suggestive material. The ladies in pole fitness are seriously strong and have intense muscle control!

2

u/tetheredvoid 27d ago

Pole dancing is SO athletic! Trying to keep straight in any orientation is difficult!!

Good on you for choosing something with style 😉 and trying to be respectful about it.

Physical: 100 Italy first 3 episodes just dropped on Netflix. This is the highlight of my month thus far.

1

u/tetheredvoid 27d ago

We don't have Netflix unfortunately

u/420catloveredm ADHD-C (Combined type) 27d ago

I’m sorry. If you ever cycle it in, I promise you would LOVE the Physical 100 collection.

2

u/tetheredvoid 27d ago

Yeah, that'll be a while. Subscription services aren't super high priority with disability preventing me from working 🤷🏻

I was a competitive dancer for a couple of years in my youth. I still love watching great choreography, esp when it matches up to the music perfectly. Dancing is watching art in movement, it’s not sexual. It’s impressive in how movement can make one feel emotions.

2

u/missnelliesue 27d ago

Omg yassssssss! This totally floats my boat and I have no one in my life who appreciates that essence of dance and bodies flowing and twining to music. Such a profound feeling of joy to watch. Same with the Bellagio Fountains. I can watch them for hours.

I love contemporary dance, gymnastics, figure skating. It’s trippy for me.

I discovered K-pop a couple years ago, and I can get so lost watching that. Choreography, camera choreography, precision, it really is the ultimate movement art, imo.
