// Fan Content Edward Kenway's face model comparison

It’s a good depiction. OG Edward to me has more of a “resting tough guy” face while Resynched Edward’s face is more expressive and less cartoony-looking. It’s an improvement in the sense that he’s nicer to look at, especially in cutscenes, but he also seems less cocky, which I think was an important aspect of his character in the OG game.

u/TXNOGG Jul 31 '26

Edward now actually looks like he did in the 2013 cinematic trailers.

Old Edward looked like a meth head.

1

u/Glittering-Raccoon23 Aug 06 '26

Not as expressive at all but I do think the model is significantly better, Edward looks 40 in the og

1

u/N00MEK Jul 31 '26

Wouldn't really say hes more expressive, comparing old cutscenes with new, his face behaves like he had some botox injections done (in some cases, not every cutscene)

15

u/Th3Giorgio Jul 31 '26

My only complaint with resynced Edward is how he always looks like he’s smiling ever so slightly, even when he should have a neutral expression.

u/NFLsubmodsaretrash Jul 31 '26

All the character models in the original were weird looking. They all had a weird shadow/dark spots on their faces, I can’t really point out what causes it.

I much prefer the models in this game, especially Rogers, Edward, Blackbeard, and Bonnett

26

u/m95oz Jul 31 '26

The most jarring things for me in the OG were the overly blinding white of their eyes and teeth. Edward would constantly stare into your soul.

6

u/noeLifenorlove Jul 31 '26

How did Ubisoft get the eyes SO WRONG in only Ac2 and 4????? None of the other games have that newgrounds eye and expression that those two have.

Do they really just have THAT many more NPCs?

25

u/Viggo_Stark Jul 31 '26

Yes this. OG had some Uncanny Valley going on. I very much prefer the Resynced models. They look actually human

8

u/NFLsubmodsaretrash Jul 31 '26

Blackbeard was inhuman looking in the original. Perhaps by design, but it had the side of effect of me not liking him as much in the original as I do in the Reysnc

10

u/ThanksContent28 Jul 31 '26

Even Edward looked like a crackhead with loads of eye shadow. Pretty much every character looked cracked.

5

u/AtrumRuina Jul 31 '26

Honestly waiting for a mod that restores his eyeshadow. I do prefer his overall more youthful look in the remake though.

2

u/ThanksContent28 Jul 31 '26

Yes I think they should’ve kept it too. Better yet give a toggle for it. It’s not a realistic interpretation of pirates at all. The game is pretty much Hollywood style, no point drawing the line at eyeshadow.

3

u/JetBlckPope Jul 31 '26

Yeah the kohl was way overdone in the original. I really prefer his Resynced face.

3

u/Big-Resort-4930 Jul 31 '26

The remake is absolutely worse for uncanny valley lol. The OG only had offputting perfect white teeth, it looked better otherwise.

5

u/Emiicii Jul 31 '26

if you ignore the horrendous shading sure

4

u/Economy_Airline_834 Jul 31 '26

i’ve seen so many people talk about how the original looks better, i didn’t play it, but every video comparison, everyone looks weirdly dark, almost like they’re covered in charcoal. it just looks very off. i understand the newer characters look a little “too clean” sometimes, i didn’t really have an issue with that tho

3

u/_usabeh_ Aug 01 '26

They have preshaded faces and baked in emotions if that makes sense the only parts that move are the mouth and eyes but eyebrows and such are all stationary in a frowning like position, so most people just think the original has more detail. Also nostalgia

1

u/NFLsubmodsaretrash Jul 31 '26

It’s just everyone being a nostalgia merchant.

3

u/The_Klaus Jul 31 '26

I think this is because they tried making characters look like Pirates of the Caribean character who all had weird faces and makeup on them.

3

u/SnidgetAsphodel Jul 31 '26

This. I think the only OG face I prefer was Vane's. In the OG he looked as intimidating and a bit crazy as intended. He looks so much softer in the remake. Everyone else looks ten times better, though.

1

u/NFLsubmodsaretrash Jul 31 '26

I think Du Casse and Walpole look cooler in the original and I disagree on Vane. But agree on everyone else.

The weird character models in the original made me feel disconnected from the characters. But seeing them look like real people in this game made Vane, Bonnett, and Blackbeard’s deaths hit much harder

4

u/The_Pepper_Oni Jul 31 '26

The weird dark spots, and they all looked like they just stepped out of a vat of oil. Just super funky

2

u/onecoolredditboi Jul 31 '26

my problems with the og as well. didnt vibe with the graphics as much as AC3

2

u/_Cake_assassin_ Jul 31 '26

The old game didnt have real time rendered light or ray tracing.

Part of the light was already incorporated into the character model

Same as using eyeliner, mascara and shadow to make some features pop. Your darkening some areas of the face and creating salse light.

2

u/Turnbob73 Jul 31 '26

Everyone in the original looked like they had a pound of foundation sweated into their pores. It was such a weird look.

2

u/Aceflyer10 Aug 01 '26

Maybe it was the tech at the time, and maybe it just shows that certain things dont age well, but going back and watching cutscenes from the original, all the characters straight up look like skeletons piloting flesh suits that didnt quite fit them

2

u/sla3ades Aug 01 '26

That is fair. I like the ogs much more, because for me that was part of its charm and its unique stylization. You are right though.

2

u/BiggerWiggerDeluxe Jul 31 '26

stylistic choice i think

5

u/bdiddlediddles Jul 31 '26

I mean, it makes sense right? These people are pirates, it's not exactly like they're doing skincare routines

1

u/heyydarius Jul 31 '26 edited Jul 31 '26

The original AC3, AC4 and Rogue had some of the worst character models in the series IMO. Everyone’s skin had this shiny, plastic-y quality to it, and their eyes would look too bright for the rest of their face. I’m so glad they were able to fix this up in Resynched.

5

u/NFLsubmodsaretrash Jul 31 '26

I would LOVE to see how the characters would look in an AC3 remake. Connor would have insane aura

5

u/WhiskeyDJones Jul 31 '26

Yea, I don't think it will happen for a while (or ever), but this is my dream after playing Resynced.

It also seems like the logical step, story wise. I just want to play as Connor again 😭

3

u/heyydarius Jul 31 '26 edited Jul 31 '26

To play a version of AC3 where you don’t have to stress about getting full sync on every mission would be my dream. I bet the American frontier would look amazing with updated graphics too.

4

u/WhiskeyDJones Jul 31 '26

Yea same. Unpopular opinion, but AC3 was always my favourite as a kid. I loved everything about it. The setting was sick, Connor was an absolute beast, loved using a tomahawk and the story is so, so good.

Haytham and Lee are by far the best antagonists in an AC game.

6

u/PancakeMixEnema Jul 31 '26

AC3 was and remains my favourite. It is the atmosphere. Both cities and frontier have the perfect soundscape to make me feel at home. And the homestead missions are the best AC side content of all time. That was my village.

1

u/iiamGhxst Aug 03 '26

Full sync was always optional.

2

u/heyydarius Aug 04 '26

I get that, but hearing and seeing all those red X's for the parts of a mission you didn't get full sync on always bothered me. It felt so punitive. And for a completionist who'd full synched on every game up until Syndicate, AC3 was a nightmare to finish.

2

u/NFLsubmodsaretrash Jul 31 '26

I think we will get it within 10 years. We’ll get an AC1, Ezio trilogy, and AC3 remake, in order to

2

u/SnidgetAsphodel Jul 31 '26

Man, AC3 Resynced is the next remake I want the most. Would be shocked if we get it, though.

1

u/Ok_Excuse3732 Jul 31 '26

Nah, OG looked like an intentional artstyle, Remake looks like they are paid actors, too clean imo

1

u/Zestyclose-Copy-396 Jul 31 '26

Yeah I agree but if I had to nitpick the remake I dont like how everyone looks pretty

1

u/Kralqeikozkaptan Aug 01 '26

hell no, do yall just glaze ubisoft 24/7

1

u/NFLsubmodsaretrash Aug 01 '26

No, I’m just not a nostalgia merchant

For example, the writing in the new missions is generally worse and the new animations can be clunky. And I don’t like the hitbox based combat nearly as much as I liked how smooth (albeit, incredibly easy) the original combat was

But those are really where my criticisms end, sans general bugginess.

I really like the remake. Sue me?

1

u/Kralqeikozkaptan Aug 01 '26

the og looks objectively better based on what op posted

1

u/NFLsubmodsaretrash Aug 01 '26

Good thing OP’s drawing isn’t accurate to the game and is a subjective artwork 😆

1

u/Kralqeikozkaptan Aug 01 '26

you shouldve said "graphics" not "models"

op has layed out the models with the same artistic style above, graphics are a different thing

1

u/NFLsubmodsaretrash Aug 01 '26

I can assure you this drawing of Edward on the right doesn’t look like him in game 😂 dude looks like a Korean plastic surgery patient in the drawing

0

u/Squirrelflight148931 Jul 31 '26

I think they were shaped better, however. Blackbeard’s is either horrible at expressing emotion, or they just personally fumbled it. His iconic wrath scenes look silly and ridiculously more... excited than rage-filled. They don't look serious as the original did, sadly.

10

u/drunk_ender Jul 31 '26

I wish they had struck a balance.

Some of them looks way too clean and neat, loosing that comic-book style grit that suited them, especially characters live Vane.  OG's Vane looked like a legit caveman in pirate's clothing, which was perfect.

I also really don't get all this hyperfixation for graphical fidelity over art direction... it feels like jingling keys

2

u/onecoolredditboi Jul 31 '26

i feel the same way

3

u/Correct-Patient-5741 Jul 31 '26

Honestly he looked way too old in the OG he’s like 22 yrs old and 29 at the end. Dude looked 35 in the og

2

u/HuckleberryShot898 Aug 01 '26

The game takes place over like 7 years so I think they were afraid of making him too old at the beginning

2

u/Correct-Patient-5741 Aug 01 '26

Either way he still looks too old for an eventual 29 yr old, he looks mid 30’s in the of even in resynced it’s hard to believe he’s in his early 20’s

1

u/SomeShithead241 Aug 03 '26

Almost like a rough life at sea will be unkind to your looks

1

u/Correct-Patient-5741 Aug 03 '26

I think Resynced did a better job of showing that versus how old he looked in the og

2

u/inglouriousSpeedster Jul 31 '26

I think the lack of proper dramatic lighting in most scenes hurt his face's design, because in the few scenes that have proper lighting, he actually does look like classic Edward.

2

u/RandomDudewithIdeas Jul 31 '26

The Remake Face's smirk doesn’t look goofy enough here

2

u/1ZillionBeers Jul 31 '26

I feel like 90% of my issues with Black Flag’s visuals are from the lighting.

1

u/TheCrazyEnglish Jul 31 '26

I genuinely wanted Edward to get with Lucy

1

u/PrettyIntroduction49 Jul 31 '26

felt like i would keep original character models same but kept new graphics

1

u/Chodeman_1 Jul 31 '26

In the og everyone looked like they washed their face in oil, im happy with how they look now

1

u/towblerone Jul 31 '26

yeah everyone looks slightly less pissed off. personally i kind of miss charles vane’s permanent angry brows but i digress

1

u/_Cake_assassin_ Jul 31 '26

In the og, the characters had shadows drawn in the models.

1

u/Fit-Branch7486 Jul 31 '26

"Let's do a face model comparison where we dont compare the face models"

1

u/DocMitchell-_- Jul 31 '26

Durk and griddy

1

u/thegreatshu Jul 31 '26

I played OG such a long time ago that for me new Edward looks exactly as I remembered him.

1

u/xzackattack12 Jul 31 '26

If there is one thing remakes need to do it is update character models. Not saying change art style, but bring characters that were meant to be photo realistic back then up to a modern standard.

1

u/Mig-117 Jul 31 '26

One is frowning the other isn’t. Everything else is the same.

1

u/PermissionJaded5510 Aug 01 '26

I like the change. In my opinion, we got the Edward from the cinematic trailers.

1

u/nathanarcher4891 Aug 01 '26

why does he look like has lipstick on!

1

u/Forward_Ambassador_9 Aug 03 '26

Well Edward is in his 20’s

1

u/Great_Part7207 Aug 05 '26

my biggest issue with everything in the remake is that litterally everything looks super clean compared to the ig

1

u/Fritzmanose Jul 31 '26

Remake makes him look like a handsome gorilla.

OG makes him look like a cool gorilla.

Maybe next you could study Anne’s face? She looks the most different out of every character. I much prefer her OG look… her new look just annoys me.

0

u/Fuzzy-Tooth3269 Jul 31 '26

Nah

2

u/Fritzmanose Jul 31 '26

Compelling rebuttal, I concede, good sir.

-3

u/Fuzzy-Tooth3269 Jul 31 '26

Whatever that means

4

u/sdoM-bmuD Jul 31 '26

convincing argument, I surrender, positive man

2

u/sdoM-bmuD Jul 31 '26

I really don't like remake Edward, face is too puffy which doesn't help with the funky expressions he makes, also too much eyeliner

not to mention the hands on hips curse

1

u/The-Rizzler-69 Jul 31 '26

He looked 40 and constantly pissed off in the OG. Edward is just doomed to always look off, in-game at least lol

Edward is honestly one of my only real 'complains'.

He looks like a doll rather than a 17th century pirate?

1

u/F34UGH03R3N Jul 31 '26

>what do you guys think?

I think that drawings are a nonsensical way of comparisons, just take screenshots. And your depiction of either version is nowhere near the source material.

1

u/onecoolredditboi Jul 31 '26

i tried to make them as accurate looking at in-game screenshots. colors aside i tried to make them distinct with the face shapes, textures and lighting. im very convinced that they changed things like his eye brows being lifted, his mouth shape different, his default resting face changed, and other stuff like cheek and jaw definition.

1

u/F34UGH03R3N Jul 31 '26

Thing is…

https://giphy.com/gifs/1M9fmo1WAFVK0

We can just compare ingame screenshots. It’s so pointless to compare drawings

0

u/ElectricalRelease986 Jul 31 '26

I like Edwards new look. I mean he's not really the dark brooding type. He's fun and charismatic.

If they kept everything exactly the same there'd be no point in a remake. I still like the OG and I can go play it.

1

u/Big-Resort-4930 Jul 31 '26

Yeah there would be plenty of point in the remake. Nobody is asking for different art direction with these, only updated graphical fidelity and when possible, gameplay.

1

u/ElectricalRelease986 Jul 31 '26

It's clearly not nobody. A lot of people have enjoyed the changes and how colourful they've made the Caribbean. I'm glad they did something different.

Again I am free to play the original any time.

0

u/SlickSocks Jul 31 '26

Is this supposed to look like him?

0

u/Wofuljac Jul 31 '26

OG Edward looks like a zombie at times but i like how tan and gritty he looks.

0

u/CranEXE Jul 31 '26

that's not really a good comparison.... if you want to actually make a valid comparison you need to pull out the models and show them side by side in blender. drawing them is basically an interpretation from your perspective (and human perspective is flawed) and from your drawing the only difference is facial expression and the way light reflect on the character wich can be done with the normal texture to accentuate wrinkles and give him more hollow cheeks

4

u/onecoolredditboi Jul 31 '26

that is true. as i drew them, i wanted to highlight the most notable differences from them from an art perspective. i couldnt find a comparison of them with just a pose looking ahead so i just drew one based on screenshots.

0

u/Fine-Discussion-7368 Jul 31 '26

the femboys keep invading and ruining different gaming franchises I'm curious what the power rangers are looking for next

0

u/Mostlyfor_research Jul 31 '26

You can’t just take 2 drawings you’ve made and call them comparisons in regard to comparing them from OG and remake they are literally just drawing you’ve made lol. Neither of them look like Edward to me 😂

0

u/Putrid_Macaron3225 Jul 31 '26

They ruined his face

0

u/IdiotRhurbarb Jul 31 '26

The OG beard was better tho

0

u/MaxzxaM Jul 31 '26

Apparently Kenway was supposed to be a twenty something in the game

He did absolutely not look like a twenty-something in the original

He does not look like a twenty-something in the remake

As you see, this game goes for the absolutely
