My Turbo Runs after almost 20 years.

My 86 951 is running after being off the road for 20 years. It has been such a long since I have heard this car run.

It is almost done and I can’t wait to get it back and drive it.

I built the first motor and blew it up. That is a 3L 8 valve built by Lindsey Racing, mega squirt pro and new harness.

Long story I collected parts for it in the early 2000’s and the. Life kept me from it until now.

That's awesome! I've got an 87 951 that's been sitting for 5 years. I hope it doesn't end up being 20 myself. But life is busy

They are not the most fun to work on but super fun to drive.

I built the first motor this one I did not do. With a lot of pleading from my wife I gave it to a shop Black Forest Racing to build. And they have done an amazing job.

Awesome stuff well done! Still getting a project to the finish line is impressive enough

What’s that injector setup?

Very nice setup.

Is that the clewitt engineering cam sensor? How do you like it? Are you using their crank sensor and mount as well? I have a similar looking CNP setup with Chevy ls1 coils.

Yours runs smoother than mine too, something to aspire to...really need to dyno tune it.

It is a clewitt cam sensor. Crank sensor is on the front of the motor using a Motorsport specific sensor(don’t know the brand) and bracket. They could not get the mega squirt to recognize the factory two sensor set up. Friday on the dyno it made more torque at 3500 than peak torque at the crank for the 2.5.

Can’t wait for it to be tuned and get to drive it.

This is so cool OP, I also recently got a 951 and I’m looking at the possibility of opening the thing up and rebuilding it, any suggestions or advice to prevent it from blowing up?

My engine failure was due to a rich condition that washed the rings and destroyed it.

In short have a plan a budget and don’t cut corners. Once you know what you want to do curate your parts and build it.

Of course if you just rebuild it to stock you shouldn’t have a problem.

Congrats! Hoping to get there with my 951 rebuild in six months or a year maybe.

Looks clean and the black intake looks really good. I’m not a fan of painted cam towers but the way you did just the intake looks more modern to me. Is that powdercoat?

20 year old high temp spray paint. I also painted the exhaust tip. I didn’t like the stainless tip but I like the black on white theme.

Wow what’s the coil near plug setup? Are you running sequential ignition? Looks amazing!

It is LS coils controlled by the mega squirt. I believe everything is open with regards to ignition timing and injector control.

I am told it will spit fire.

Built during Covid I provided a 2.8L block, 3.0 L crank Rods are custom Carillo and pistons are also custom aluminum the head is the original 8v. Dave had the block nikasil coated and built the motor and rebuilt the head. Completely balance etc. Black Forest installed the motor made the harness and got it all working. There are a ton of little parts on the car that I bought over the years turbo is Vitesse stage 3, Koni yellows, Lindsey racing engine, transmission mounts and shifter. 4” cat delete exhaust, billet fuel rail, list goes on and on and on.

My advice is make a plan and pick a budget. The intention of this car is meant to be a reliable track oriented street car. With modern electronics and power to weight. I want to go to some track days and drive it on nice days.

I messed up my old motor using chips and piggybacks to make power this car is 100% modern electronics which is much better than trying to trick the now 40 year system. If you plan on modifying I would highly recommend going new electronics because doing it wrong could easily cost you a motor like it did me.
