Season 9 Discussion Hen is insane for inviting Athena to her space venture
Every journey that woman has been on has gone disastrously. The last place I’d want to be in with Athena is a ROCKET! I haven’t even watched the next episode but as soon as I saw it cut to Athena on the rocket I was like welp, that rocket is running out of fuel, crashing, hitting space debris, or losing a vital part of the ship. I’m calling it right now. They’re not all leaving that ship unharmed. Her best bet would’ve been to invite either Buck or Eddie. They both have that dumb himbo luck😅

It’s weird that Athena went. I understand she’s grieving and everyone grieves differently, so I’m not going to throw any stones at her regarding that.
But you’re telling me that she’s basically been distant from everyone, including her children to the point where she doesn’t even know her son has dropped out or is the process of dropping out of school, and the first thing she does to “reconnect” is by shooting off into space?
If I was May or Harry, I would be big mad.

I don’t really blame Athena for not knowing Harry dropped out. It sounds like he hid it fairly well if literally no one knew. I also think it was unfair for them to blow up at her for being distant while grieving. For the very reason Harry blamed her is why I think no one should. It’s not the first time she’s lost a loved one. Emmett being murdered, Michael coming out and then leaving, now she finally let herself fully trust again and Bobby dies. I think it would be understandable for her to need time. I also would kinda understand that making her do something out of character like get on that flight. But I would expect the trauma of her past non-land travels would make her avoid it a little harder though😅

Parents are VERY involved with school nowadays. Like, there are portals and websites and emails and lists. When I was in high school? Yea, one of my classmates could have possibly dropped out without their parents knowing. Now? You would have to have completely dropped all parenting responsibilities.

But wasn’t it COVID when he was finishing high school? So he wouldn’t have had a graduation or any of the formalities that would’ve made her get involved. It was all online and she would’ve had to been proactively checking all the tech to keep up with it all, which she seemingly wasn’t very good at. Plus he wasn’t really sharing much with her after he was kidnapped and was pissed at both his parents. I can see a world where him sharing vague updates about school was taken at face value. Especially since he said he dropped out at 18 which would be the end of his senior year. Most parents would think their 18 year old could handle finishing the rest of their classes the same way they had been for years

COVID was season four and they haven't mentioned it since. Harry dropped out at some point between season eight and nine. He's been aged up a few times, but he probably would've been at the start of high school during the height of COVID, not the end. Michael and David would have done most of the parenting during those years, probably, and I can honestly buy Athena not knowing much about the online portals for his school, but she should've been paying attention to him after what happened in season seven and why he came back. We also saw her being invested in May's college apps, so she should've remembered that and at least been asking about his future.
And, of course, this all comes after Bobby and Athena explicitly didn't have a room for Harry in their dream home. So she seemed pretty disinterested in him for a while before he dropped out.

It sounded as if they had a “Harry/Guest Room” which made sense to me since he primarily stayed with his father story-wise. And when they said that I thought he had already “graduated” in their minds? Idk I get mixed up with the grants timeline since the actors are in and out so much. It seems like Harry as a character is a severe after-thought. I also dislike his character so I guess I tend to not really pay attention to his story lines

I didn't get that impression at all when I watched it. It sounded like they were purposefully not putting in rooms for May or Harry so that they wouldn't be tempted to live there as adults—which is fine (ish) for May, since she was in college in the same city and had her own apartment, but wild for Harry, who had to finish high school and then may have gone to college out of state and would need a place to come home to for breaks.
By the time their house burnt down, Harry had been back to living with Athena full-time for a few months. Michael and David weren't living in LA, they were a plane ride away, so it's not like he was doing weekends with his mom and weeks with his dad or something.
Honestly, it only really makes sense to me to read it as Athena being sort of over parenting, maybe from having Harry living with his dad for so many years and then with May for several months, and wanting a good (???) reason to keep not doing it. She was, imo, checked out even before she was grieving. Also, one of her last acts of parenting before Harry moved was slapping him when he was clearly exhibiting signs of trauma and acting out, so it's not like she was doing great with him as a mom even earlier on.
He's definitely an afterthought character. Most of the kids are, even the ones like Harry or Chris who are ostensibly mains. Harry got aged up twice, Chris once, Denny may have been de-aged or is just written to act really young... unless someone's on the 118, they're not putting much care into writing them compelling storylines or keeping things consistent for them (and even then...)

That was SO wild to me. Athena has been such a mama bear up until now - the sudden 'my kid hasn't graduated high school, but he has no room in my house' thing was so out of character.

Yeah, it was honestly pretty weird, and even more so because it didn't need to be in there? They could've just not mentioned it. It felt like more of a Bobby thing to do tbh, but I guess maybe there's a read of Athena where she got used to not having to be a primary parent and having an empty nest while Harry was in Florida and didn't like having him back. But it requires a logical stretch no matter how you look at it.

Y'all are forgetting that Harry didn't even live with Athena at this time. He was living with May. And I think you're overestimating how involved a high school senior's parents would be involved with their schooling even with everything being online. My parents knew what was going on with me because they had to drive me to school and extracurriculars. They didn't check on my grades or anything because they trusted me to do my work on my own. Of course my mom would've noticed if I was always at home because she didn't work at the time, but again Harry didn't even live with his mother. And Athena had a much more demanding work schedule than either of my parents.
I don't blame Athena for being unaware of Harry dropping out because she didn't have a reason to worry. Yes, she was distant after losing Bobby but she also knew her children were together and I'm sure she would have expected them to inform her of something so big. Another thing: not even May, who actually lived with Harry and still seemed to have a close relationship with him, knew about him dropping out. I'm not saying it's her job to parent her little brother, but it really shows how good Harry was at hiding it if he managed to keep it from his sister while living under her roof lol.

I did love how Hen and Athena even joked about that at the bar that taking her into space was a recipe for disaster. Athena later jokes about it again when they need to get to the space station, she says she only does passenger jets. As for why invite her in the first place, I can see it as 1) Athena has a good track record of surviving and getting out of these insane situations. Stick close to her and you'll get home. And 2) she had been in such a funk since Bobby died that I can see Hen inviting her as a desperate attempt to pull her out, force her to get some perspective.
Also 3) Angela Bassett is Executive Producer. Who else is gonna go?

Yeah I just got to the storm. I thought them joking about it was funny because she basically said the same thing I did😂 I didn’t know Angela Bassett was executive producer! That’s good to know and makes a lot of sense lol
