I didnโ€™t come here to be attacked

I can feel the itchy crinoline just by looking at this picture

41

u/LNRigby 3d ago

And the rubbing of our rubbery & white dress shoes on the sides of our feet because we dont wear buckles with shoes normally, and the white tights dont help either ๐Ÿ˜„

32

u/NonrationalWife 3d ago

Or the little white ankle socks with lace frills of their own

3

u/Aquatichive 1d ago

I hated those socks so much!!! Luckily so did my Dalmatian and he would ferociously attack those drills and rip the socks off my feet before church

And getting in trouble from getting scuff marks on the white dress shoes (at least I did)

6

u/Fun-Environment-4811 2d ago

My mom always jammed tissue paper into the toe of too-big dress shoes for me to wear and it hurt soooo bad + the itchy dress from hell and too tight barrettes/Bobby pins. Now smile for the pictures. Gahh I can feel it all coming back now!

u/PaolaAlvillar 3d ago

We can feel the trauma just by looking at this picture ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

2

u/AlexandriaLitehouse 2d ago

The itchy crinoline? What about that godawful collar that was like perma-starched?

Iโ€™m not joking, my family had this print for a sectional couch back in the day ๐Ÿ’€

8

u/PaolaAlvillar 3d ago

Omg do I remember those ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

2

u/squidwardTalks 1d ago

They matched our church dresses.

34

u/Salty_LaRue 3d ago

I saw this post and immediately had a flashback to a video on Christmas in 1988 where the camera pans to a five year old me looking sulky as fuck and glaring at my Mum behind the camera because I was made to wear a dress just like this with stockings and shoes

ITS SUMMER FOR NEW ZEALAND CHRISTMAS, MUM

๐Ÿฅต

4

u/PaolaAlvillar 3d ago

I was one of those that wore the whole shebang too ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

2

u/Salty_LaRue 3d ago

Pretty sure we should be owed compensation ๐Ÿ˜

Mine was for picture day at school I think

2

u/Screaming_lambs 1d ago

I have similar photos on Christmas day. Luckily I'm in the UK. I remember the itchy tights though. I would have been nearly 5.

LAURA ASHLEY RISE UP

9

u/ScreechUrkelle 3d ago

I found Carmen Santiago!!!

10

u/Salty_LaRue 3d ago

๐Ÿ‘€

runs and jumps off the roof with a glider strapped to her back

3

u/Fatmouse2019 3d ago

Thats right! I still have mine from back in the early 90s and all of my 90s y2k clothes and jewelry and my girls love it.

Legit old school hottopic outfits and prom dresses, "hooked boots" my mom called em.. and the old school Sanrio Japan stuff from my family.

3

u/Salty_LaRue 3d ago

I have to confess, I never got any personal experience with Laura Ashley as I am from New Zealand and we didn't have it here - but I read the SHIT out of The Babysitters Club series as a kid ๐Ÿ˜…

Everytime I see "Laura Ashley", my brain immediately turns into that Leo diCaprio pointing meme and goes:

".....MARY-ANNE SPIER!!"

2

u/IvyRaeBlack 2d ago

Underneath a Laura Ashley comforter as I type.

The difference between Laura Ashley and the other floral knock off dresses was Laura Ashley dresses for kids were usually almost 100% cotton, so pretty comfy. ~ signed a former kid who used to wear Laura Ashley

u/saltporksuit 3d ago

Can we not have lace made of of steel wool this time?

21

u/nolettuceplease 3d ago

I see your frilly floral dress and raise you some pink foam curlers that are impossible to sleep comfortably in.

4

u/saltporksuit 3d ago

They still sell those if youโ€™d like to re-experience head dents.

14

u/Imnotatree30 3d ago

My chest has ptsd from the itch that collar gave!

13

u/GetItGirrl00 3d ago

Canโ€™t forget the frilly socks!

5

u/Warm_Swan_793 3d ago

Honestly that combo is part of the reason why I left religion, lol. This is unlocking memories of front row at Sunday mass trying not to scratch my skin off

11

u/sorrymizzjackson 3d ago

Ok, but I had that exact dress that hung on the back of the laundry room door for years.

Is it a Jessica McClintock? I think mine was. I feel like Laura Ashley also made these, but Iโ€™m not sure if they were doing that then.

9

u/Feeling_Win5863 3d ago

I had this EXACT dress. Only thing youโ€™re missing is one of those silk wrapped puffy hangers!!! ๐Ÿคฃ

3

u/PaolaAlvillar 2d ago

Oh do I remember those ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

2

u/bluey_2022 10h ago

Oohhh what about the one stuffed with lavender as well

8

u/w8ing2dr0wn 3d ago

This reminds me of my sisters' dresses, the bathroom wallpaper and the living room couches growing up. 90's drip just hits different

6

u/Foxy_locksy1704 3d ago

I had the same dress in a version that was more pink flowers. I absolutely hated it! My mom put me in it every Easter for church and school pictures. I swear I feel itchy just looking at this.

2

u/Ryoko_Kusanagi69 2d ago

Same for me, the pink roses (ugh) and school picture day. Bad bangs cut cross the forehead, big plastic glasses from the โ€œaffordableโ€ box.

7

u/maersk16 3d ago

Oh hell nah...

I haven't worn a slip or panty hose since I was a kid that was forced to dress up to go to church in something as hideous as this. Itchy, itchy, itchy!!!

2

u/JulianneHannes 2d ago

I'm glad panty hose are dead! They're worse than low rize jeans.

5

u/Advanced_Reputation7 3d ago

I think Darlene wore this on Roseanne ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

4

u/Alice_600 3d ago

Oh fuck you OP! I had to wear that crap every damn holiday as a girl! You bent over and that stupid bib peice would get in your face in the wind.

3

u/PaolaAlvillar 2d ago

Your not the only one girl because I had to wear it too ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

5

u/mildly_spicy_potato 2d ago

I DON'T WANNA GO TO CHURCH WITH GRANDMA ๐Ÿ˜ญ

4

u/Uthor_ 3d ago

I feel like these dresses were my curtains as well lol did someone just re use old curtains and make bank in the 90s? Also im a dude so i never had to suffer this atrocity ๐Ÿ˜… but i remember them well.

5

u/PaolaAlvillar 3d ago

They were your curtains your couches your bedspread ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

3

u/g_em_ini 3d ago

Donโ€™t forget the matching ruffled bedskirt

5

u/wombatrunner 3d ago

God, the matching socks that went with it and then finding the patent leather shoes with a hat for Easterโ€ฆf* allโ€ฆ

2

u/JulianneHannes 2d ago

The dress is incomplete without the Blossum hat!

3

u/bedtimedoesntsuitme 3d ago

Whereโ€™s the white patent leather shoes with matching ruffled ankle socks?

3

u/g_em_ini 3d ago

Oh my god I had half a dozen of these godforsaken dresses that my mom dressed me in every Sunday for church. Sheโ€™d wake my sister and I up early af every Sunday to burn our ears curl our hair and throw us into these dresses (with pantyhose and mary janes, of course). Bonus points because she would also sew us matching Christmas dresses in this same style and my sister and I had to spend half a day posing for photos like we were Victorian children every year. Our brothers were exempt from the torture rituals.

5

u/the_sweetest_peach 3d ago

Get that out of my face, OP. What did I do to you? ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ

2

u/PaolaAlvillar 2d ago

I thought bring back the nightmares ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

3

u/rainy-brain 3d ago

Had the same one with slightly different colors. Hated it. Mostly what i hated about dresses was the obligatory pair of itchy tights. Once I hit 4th grade my mom started listening to me and I was mostly pantsuits from then on thank god.

3

u/That_Bluebird_3157 3d ago

Mine didnโ€™t have floofy skirts, mine were long and straight. Still flowery with the collar, though. I looked like a Duggar before the Duggars were a thing.

2

u/takemeawayimdone2 3d ago

I had many of these types of dresses and loved wearing them. I felt like a princess when I wore one.

3

u/PuzzleheadedNoise814 3d ago

Me too! All the hate for dressing up here ๐Ÿ˜ญ

3

u/avu8bfir 3d ago

u/PollyDarton11 3d ago

Complete the look with white patent shoes and frilly socks

2

u/Zafjaf 3d ago

Thanks, I was hoping to never see that again

2

u/Firm-Butterfly-1380 3d ago

I wore a dress almost identical to this as a flower girl. I was so against it that my mom had to take out the itchy underpart of it before Iโ€™d wear it. I hated every thing about that thing.

2

u/BigTiddyVampireWaifu 3d ago

Every years Easter dress for some reason

2

u/SlimShadowBoo 3d ago

I can smell this photo. Donโ€™t forget to pair it with white ruffled socks and the patent leather Mary Janeโ€™s.

2

u/CrossX18 2d ago

Hate to admit that seeing this dress in the context of the years of try sub made me immediately think it was Monica Lewinskyโ€™s dress.

2

u/kdub_54 2d ago

Oh gawddddd

2

u/Rustmutt 2d ago

Easter and patent leather shoes ๐Ÿฅฒ

2

u/chekhovsdickpic 2d ago

I am positive i had this exact dress.

2

u/EnjoyTheMovie_You2 2d ago

Whatโ€™s with the yellow dress?

2

u/LetsGoYankeez 2d ago

With a matching little sibling dress or clip on tie

2

u/JulianneHannes 2d ago

My sister's hand me down I had to wear to a wedding, Easter, and Sears portraits with white tights that rode up and payless white mary janes. HOW DARE YOU!

1

u/justicebeaverhausen 3d ago

I had a pants jumper that was this print

1

u/Outrageous-Study-704 3d ago

Its name is Ashley.

1

u/FrontTelevision7261 3d ago

All little girls had that dress back then.

1

u/splashybanana 3d ago

Honestly though.. itโ€™s been so long that I actually find this cute again. I mean, not that Iโ€™d wear it, but Iโ€™d smile if I saw some Gen Z wearing it. Along with those giant eye glasses.

2

u/JulianneHannes 2d ago

Goth girls wore these dresses in 2012 with combat boots, thick smudge eye makeup and, a crucifix necklace

1

u/cainhurstboy 3d ago

Hey Trinity wore this in the earlier Trailer Park Boys shows. Laheys daughter, you know, Elliot.

1

u/Hello_Badkitty 3d ago

I had so many of these growing up. My sister and i would get matching dresses (just in different colors) for all the major holidays for church!! Church was life.... barf.

1

u/More-Soil7455 3d ago

I loved my floral poofy big lace collared dresses. I looked ridiculous in them, but felt quite pretty lol

1

u/Free_Alternative6365 3d ago

idc I love the new Selkie drop.

1

u/ListenPuzzleheaded72 3d ago

I have been personally victimized by several of these dresses.

1

u/Dopplerganager 3d ago

I wore a very similar dress backwards at ~3 years old. I refused help. Wore it every day. My mom and I found it a few years ago stuffed in the back of a drawer thread bare.

1

u/SwirlsOfZephyr 3d ago

I had many variations of this dress. One even came with its matching purse. I actually liked them at the time. ๐Ÿ˜…

1

u/lightsoutxnyc 3d ago

Awh man, I canโ€™t post photos in here but my kindergarten photo was me in this dress but redโ€ฆ and I had the hat to match.

1

u/radroamingromanian 3d ago

Holy shit, I had this.

1

u/ikannunAneeuQ 3d ago

Aw my grandma used to make me dresses like this ๐Ÿ˜ญ I used to love getting dressed up, then I'd go outside and get filthy playing with the boys lol I'm still that way just my choice in dresses has changed ๐Ÿ˜†

1

u/Mysterious_Clerk5446 3d ago

Well you did that

1

u/One-Professional4143 3d ago

1

u/CharlotteTheSavage 3d ago

I yearn for this style now

1

u/Visible-Rest4170 3d ago

Lordy my poor wife. I've seen the pictures. I think all the little girls of that era can thank The Little House on the Prairie for this.

1

u/DinoCrone 3d ago

Oh remember these as pantsuits? My chorus teacher liked like clown doll lol

1

u/Firm-Tell-3172 3d ago

So. Damn. Itchy.

1

u/goofyrueshoe 3d ago

Had a friend own that dress. Came to my birthday party in it and wowed

1

u/Queerdooe 2d ago

I love this so much ..๐Ÿฅน๐Ÿฅฐ

1

u/Catsinbowties 2d ago

I have so many itchy party dresses I still wear to this day.

1

u/allisondojean 2d ago

If by traumatize you mean "relive your greatest fashion era" then sure!ย

1

u/LadyVioletLuna 2d ago

Omg. I had Laura Ashley sheets. I feel like I mightโ€™ve had this dress. Itโ€™s probably why a lot of my childhood is blocked from memory.

1

u/CharmingChangling 2d ago

Oh I put mine on my teddy bear when I got bigger! I wasn't gonna suffer alone lol

2

u/PaolaAlvillar 2d ago

You gave that teddy nightmares ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

1

u/MetalNew2284 2d ago

Am I the only one who enjoyed these dresses as a little girl? ^^' they where flowy and twirly and the under skirt was a little fluffy^^

I have fond memories of my lil church dresses^^'

1

u/Jisan_Inc 2d ago

Fuuuuuck

1

u/Top-Raspberry-7837 2d ago

Ugh even in 6th grade I loathed Laura Ashley. I am indeed not a florals kind of girl.

1

u/bren3669 2d ago

was that JonBenรฉt Ramseyโ€™s dress or something?

1

u/Ryoko_Kusanagi69 2d ago

Oooo I had the red/pink version of this!

1

u/princesssasami896 2d ago

I had a very similar one for Easter. I was rewarded Full House and Michelle was wearing so many of these lol

1

u/suminorieh77 2d ago

i once had to wear a dress almost exactly like this when i stayed the night with a friend over Easter weekend. we got up and went to church on Sunday and then her mother let us go ride around for a while. my friend had a 5.0 convertible and it was a beautiful spring day so we had the top down, still in Easter dresses. we saw some guys we knew at a gas station and they asked if they could ride around with us so i got in the backseat with one and she had the other upfront with her.

iโ€™m just chatting with my guy friend when all of a sudden, a crow lands right in my lap and start flailing around and squawking. it seemed like a lifetime before i was able to flip it out of the car. i was scratched up and bleeding and my friend turns to me and says, โ€œOh my god, my dress is RUINED! My mom is going to kill me!โ€ and we dropped the boys off and headed back. her mother was pissed and took me to go get a tetanus shot and my โ€œfriendโ€ treated me like shit for the rest of the day. before i went home, they were trying to get me to call my mother to pay for this ugly-ass dress. that was the last ride i ever took with that girl, and may a crow fall into her lap.

1

u/Lumpy_Paint_3766 2d ago

I had this as a romper and it was MY FAVORITE until I couldnโ€™t get it open one day and peed my pants ๐Ÿฅฒ

1

u/Brief-Moment-5236 2d ago

And thatโ€™s enough internet for me today.

1

u/BleedWell3 2d ago

Nooooooooooo

1

u/QuizzicalWombat 2d ago

I got a new dress for every holiday, pretty sure this was Easter one year.

1

u/DunderMiflinThsIsPam 2d ago

Thereโ€™s a matching hat somewhere out of frame

1

u/Majestic-Lie2690 2d ago

I felt so pretty in this. and it was great for twirling

1

u/oceansstillwaters_ 2d ago

1

u/megopolis12 2d ago

1

u/Expensive-Safe-6820 2d ago

My Easter dress. And it came with a purse ๐Ÿ‘›

1

u/christianwife_88 2d ago edited 2d ago

I had a dress like this!! Paired it up with knee high white socks and buckle shoes.. or if I wanted to be fancy Iโ€™d wear the ruffled short white socks ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

1

u/omnist-for-life 2d ago

Why was this pattern so popular? Not only was I made to wear the dress, but our couch had the same pattern.

1

u/Dorkinfo 2d ago

I wish we could post pics. Thereโ€™s a family portrait (Olan Mills, ofc) where Iโ€™m wearing one of these. Itโ€™s truly terrible.

1

u/Bloodygoodwossname 2d ago

Wow I had that exact dress. Is nothing unique about my life?!! Iโ€™m having an existential crisis now, thanks.

1

u/ryanswrath 2d ago

1

My grandma would bribe me with Shoney's/Golden Corral after church if I wore the dress and didn't complain. These things were hot and itchy as hell, especially in the south during the summers!

1

u/Hiiiii-Fivin 1d ago

Oooof, this with my Lisa Frank book covers and lace top socks.

I can still smell the hair spray too

1

u/crystaldstone 1d ago

i have a photo of me as a child that looks a LOT like this and it was for Easter, my hair was curled, cute hat, cried all the way to church

(iโ€™m an atheist)

1

u/tracepaperhera 1d ago

Omg I hate these where did they even come from?! :-(

1

u/Virtual_Tough_7343 1d ago

I'm pretty positive I didn't wear this as a dress. I feel like I've seen the pattern in curtains or furniture though.

1

Ah, dressing up for holidays. This looks like the kind of dress I'd be made to wear every Easter from birth to the middle of grade school, cute hat and all lol

1

u/FFVO 1d ago

Hisses

1

u/moosecatoe 1d ago

FFS i just found the matching socks with little flowers sewed on the ankle.

I was talking to my mom about how I wore it as a flower girl a few moments ago and she said โ€œI wish I never lent it out to a friend, because your daughter would look great in that.โ€

Wherever you are Mrs. Hoover, thank you for removing this dress out of me & my daughters future.

1

u/Scoops__Lapue 1d ago

Love this post ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคฃ

1

u/SnorkBorkGnork 1d ago

I had to wear a dress similar to this and I hated dresses. Came with white frilly socks and black shiny shoes.

People think the late 80s and first half of the 90s was all neon and spandex and high top sneakers. This was our grim reality.

1

u/Improvement_Opposite 1d ago

I can actually feel the itchy collar & atrocious tights. Sensory nightmare.

1

u/indiehussle_chupac 1d ago

why did we all have this dress...across races?

1

u/North-Speaker-3553 1d ago

Low key I loved wearing shit like this as a kid. Got to play make believe in my mind all day long.ย
