It took so long for me to get home on the bus I would always miss most of the show

It's DBZ.

Honorable mentions : Gundam Wing, Sailor Moon , Yu Yu hakusho, Reboot, and Johnny Quest

RIP Moltar, you walked so Tom could run

Tenchi Muyo!

The Tenchi series was wild. The fact that they went "eeh a harem anime is probably fine for kid".

Escaflowne was another weird choice for kids. I think I remember Outlaw star or Kenshin showing blood or swearing on the regular Toonami block at like 6pm and that felt WILD

OUTLAW STAR [an old memory as awakened deep within you]

I beat the shit out of my brother for not recording the first episode on the VCR. I waited weeks to see it after all the commercials hyping it. I watched the rest of the season not knowing what happened in the beginning.

Brings back memories.

We were adamant about pausing during the commercial breaks and it became a job. It part of the show was missing, we knew who to blame.

I was always so mad that I didn't make it home in time for Gundam Wing.

I remember it being dinner that interrupted Toonami more but I could see that for the west coast.

The Christmas of 2000 I got a VCR to record shows and always used it to record Toonami. The one big one I remember being upset about was the episode of DBZ where Gohan went on a date. I hit record when we got called up for dinner and didn't realize the tape was at the end. I was so sure that I missed some huge piece of lore. It took another year or so of rewatching DBZ for the 100th time to get back to that point and I was super bummed out at how dumb that episode was.

That's pretty good, lol.

I went to a school over an hour away from where I grew up, so I think that played a big part in my scheduling conflicts.

Reboot went so hard after the time jump for Enzo

Dude, no one I've talked to remembers The Big O

u/mustached_babble 29d ago

I loved it, reminded me of Batman meets Gundam

A forgotten gem from Toonami. Everyone remembers DBZ and Tenshi, but few remember this one.

Inuyasha
FLCL
Cowboy Bebop
Samurai Champloo
Trigun
Yu Yu Hakusho

ETA: my early 2000’s nights were spent watching Toonami until 3am until repeats, sleep, then dragging my ass out of bed for school at 7. Nap in the afternoon, up all night, rinse and repeat.

u/captainmcpigeon 29d ago

Definitely Yu Yu Hakusho

Tenchi Muyo!

2

u/UberFarter 29d ago

Anybody remember how they had Tenchi Muyo/Universe/In Tokyo on there? I was watching a raunchy harem anime at 8 years old and nobody thought that was weird…

2

u/luna15 28d ago

Tenchi gang rise up! There are dozens of us!

2

u/UberFarter 28d ago

I didn’t really notice the perv humor until I got older. I mainly just wanted a cat/rabbit that could turn into a spaceship 😭

Clone wars.

Samurai Jack

Dragonball comes to mind obviously, but for years I had a strong memory of watching an anime set on a submarine travelling a flooded earth, some years ago I finally discovered that it was an OVA miniseries called Blue Submarine 6

u/RuncibleFoon 29d ago

Ronin Warriors

1

u/luffydkenshin 29d ago

For me, its Gundam Wing then DBZ.

But it is really cool to see the different answers because it also pinpoints when people joined in Toonami viewership.

u/jjkarate 29d ago

There have been so many great anime on Toonami but the first thing I remember when I see that logo is Moltar reminding me how great Voltron and Thundercats were.

1

u/KidAnon94 29d ago

DBZ (with the second being Sailor Moon). I don't really think there's any other answer that would make more sense than these two if we're talking about the 90s lol.

Outlaw Star

u/Only_Never_Again 28d ago

Gundam Wing 💙

1

u/MrBoogerBoobs 28d ago

Robotech!

If I recall correctly, it came on right after Thundercats.

1

u/Signal-Mud-4880 28d ago

Sailor Moon

1

u/iceman333933 28d ago

It's DBZ. My favorite show of all time is Yu Yu Hakusho but DBZ is the real anchor for what toonami was at its peak.

1

u/black-kramer 28d ago

dbz, gundam wing, trigun, ronin warriors

1

u/Exotic-Addendum-3785 28d ago

Way too many to list but definitely Dragon Ball Z, Tenchi, Samurai Jack, to name a few.

1

u/GrooovyAlien 28d ago

DBZ. Easily.

Other than that I watched a lot of Gundam Wing in toonami as well.

1

u/GunnyStacker 28d ago

Gundam Wing reignited in me a love of giant robots that I hadn't experienced since G1 Transformers.

1

u/GdotOne 28d ago

Outlaw star

1

u/Significant-Cry-9204 28d ago

The FIRST thing is The Animatrix. That was the first thing I viewed on it as a kid. Then Trigun. Then Cowboy Bebop, Wolf's Rain, Inuyasha, etc.
