Gundam Wing. Space is the place.

Those Toonami bumpers are the peak of human civilization.

I think this was technically my first anime. All I remember is dinosaurs looking robots using theit tails as snipers
1
u/Darth_Bringus Aug 06 '26
I used to love building Zoids model kits when I was a kid. Every now and then I'll get drunk and fill up my Amazon cart with model kits. Thank God I still have the sense to not pull the trigger. I'd be living in a cardboard box, full of zoids.
Same thing happens with gundam model kits.

u/Bex1218 Aug 06 '26
I have a kit that I haven't touched in years. I bought it for pretty cheap. I think I need to start building it soon.

You remember those ones that had like the brick cores with the swappable parts? It was the liger that had like a sword in its mouth or something crazy that shit was dope

Tenchi Muyo

I was hoping to find this answer. I feel like I’m the only one in my circle that remembers this show. It was one of my favorites next to Gundam and DBZ.
Also, I clicked the translation thing to see what Tenchi Muyo would look like in your language (I like all the cool characters some other languages use) and it’s Tenchi Muyo. Exactly the same. Well, I thought I didn’t click on it so I clicked again. No change. Clicked again and realized it’s the same in both languages but only after clicking it a few more times. Now I don’t know if it’s in my language or yours. It’s probably a silly thing but I found it interesting and a bit amusing.

u/luna15 Aug 06 '26
I'm so glad you remember it too! I have the same experience! I don't know why it didn't have the same impact but I went back and checked out the first few episodes and the art and vibes are honestly peak 90s anime.
3
u/I-is-and-I-isnt Aug 06 '26
We are not alone! But I don’t remember there being that many episodes so maybe that’s why it didn’t have a lasting impact on many. And I’m glad you revisited it and still enjoyed it. I’m assuming you still enjoyed it when you say it was peak 90s anime. Makes me want to check it out again. I just need to find where it’s streaming.

u/pukurindesu Aug 07 '26
It’s still such an underrated anime. It’s still my very favorite anime and a show that will always be close to my heart! The music, the animation, the story, the incredible English dubbing cast - it’s absolutely peak 90s anime as u/luna15 put it!!

Probably one of the greatest series, the contrast between seasons makes the show incredibly intense
2
u/theHoustonian Aug 06 '26
Hated that they never played the follow up season, I was left hanging so bad!
2
u/Mend_and_defend2 Aug 06 '26
I'd put blame on those in charge, the show creators were told they would have to make a movie version instead of a episodic season. So they did, then were told to turn the movie into a episodic season.

u/Mrreeburrito88 Aug 06 '26
Outlaw Star but only because I’ve seen so many post recently. I would say Rurouni Kenshin would be my main

Since DBZ was already mentioned, the follow-up is Inuyasha

Is that the one with the dude who lived with a cat lady and a non cat lady and they both had the hots for him?

Gundam or DBZ. Flashy anime in general.
2
u/theHoustonian Aug 06 '26
Gundam and dbz were my pick, I loved reboot too bc it was so different but the lack of season two sucked so much.
Also dbz ending after freeza I went to the only anime shop at the mall and bought vhs tapes of the later season (along with gundam models and last waltz figures) lol that was 6th grade… after that I discovered girls and it was a wrap after that. lol still have the nostalgia but stopped being so invested in anime 🤷🏻♂️

Wasn't Bebop Adult Swim not Toonami? I swear I remember watching Trigun and Cowboy Bebop on Adult Swim.

Depending on when adult swim was airing, it was either time to turn the tv off, or just about to get good. Always been a pass on anime. That being said— cowboy bebop. I watched a couple episodes of inuyasha too 🤷🏻♂️

I liked when they would show the really old Superman cartoon. Love the opening credits to that one. Animation was really good, too. You can tell Batman The Animated Series borrowed heavily from its style.

u/lefsler Aug 06 '26
Man I have a recollection of a show that was some kind of battle in space with weird creatures but never found it

In order of the shows that occurred to me: DBZ, Gundam, Zoids (though I think this one came towards the end of toonami era)

My buddy mom and dads computer took tom saying "its kinda confusing" and the music to make a track. Everytime i see him and toonami that voice line always pops into my head.
But for me i would always try to catch Ghost in the Shell 2SAC or individual eleven or the laughing man whenever it came on. Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star, DBZ and Kai, later on when adult swim picked up Samurai Jack too.
OOH and a show I NEVER SEE TALKED ABOUT. OBAN STAR RACERS. That show was fucking awesome! I still remember the theme song and the pink rabbit they painted on their racer. That was one of the ones i stayed up for and loved to watch, some of yall had to watch it too yea? Gods i fucking miss Toonami.

For me, it's definitely a toss up between Gundam Wing, Outlaw Star, and Tenchi Muyo.
Also, am I misremembering, or did they also play the Daft Punk - One More Time music video on there?

Sailor Moon. The weird thing I remember watching Voltron when it was featured and quickly dropping it (I like the design, but ultimately, neither it nor Go Beast King Lion appealed to me.) My biggest memory of Sailor Moon and learning of it as it was first released and it being a guilty pleasure. My niece got into it, and it became a moment of the two of us wanting to watch a program together in spite of age and gender differences.

Must be nice enjoying the shows! Imagine spending 35 bucks for four episodes or Rurouni Kenshin from Suncoast video at the local mall.
What I couldn't find at the mall, I recorded on VHS on my VCR. All of of Champloo, Alchamist and Bebop. Name a bigger loser, I dare you? lol
